Did you ever ride a trail you've watched before on KZfaq? Were you disappointed? That's because it's all a lie. Video production, from cameras to editing to audio processing, is designed to make even the most mundane things look and sound amazing.
Thunder Mountain, a trail in southern Utah, is one of the trails that put me on a mountain bike. I may have overhyped it just a smidge, as I had to learn the hard way.
We're using footage from fellow MTB KZfaqrs:

• HOW 'BOUT THEM ALPS? |...
BCpov: Just Your Average Desert Trail Ride
• JUST YOUR AVERAGE DESE...
Berm Peak (formerly known as Seth's Bike Hacks): Backyard Trail Build

plus clips from KZfaq Pendant: NYC in 1993 in HD
• New York City in 1993 ...

I rode the trail recently. It's in my own backyard, as I live in Utah. Yeah, I saw Eric's video before that. But I also checked out the elevation map on TrailForks. I also know what it's like to ride southern Utah trails. I also know the area. Of course, I watched your video before riding this trail too. And here I am, back again to say that the trail is still way better than you let on. And I can say that because I didn't overhype myself. I know that there's a climb before every descent. I've done the 10+ miles of climbing only to get a 4 mile descent. I've pedaled through the suck to find the gnarly, the sends, and the flow. And because of all that, I treat every trail as an adventure, never truly knowing what will come my way. And because of that, I'll never be disappointed.

beautifully put. i've certainly learned a lesson that day, as i do every day i ride. thank you for your thoughtful comment, it means a lot to me that other people appreciate thinking about these things too. so many factors come to play for a riding experience, and going through the tough is definitely part of it. the climb on thunder mountain isn't even bad, and the scenery makes way up for it. this is for sure one of those "the path is the goal" kinda trails, and i certainly would like to give it another spin. and there's so much more great riding in southern utah, you're truly blessed.

Just found this via Trailfork app, and you have a new subscriber. Your idea here reminds me of a psychology paper I once read. When we take a vacation, the point of greatest enjoyment is immediately before because of anticipation, excitement, and hope. The point of lowest enjoyment is during the vacation, when we experience the reality that the vacation is not exciting and perfect every second. The time after actually provides enjoyment in the middle, as we remember the good parts and the bad part fade from memory. Expectations matter hugely. The "best trail" I've ever ridden, in that moment, was while being guided by a friend on a good, but not great, local trail I had never known about, simply because I didn't expect it.

Thank you John! Hugely appreciated. I'd be quite interested in that paper, this whole topic is something I'm rather interested in. Happiness management if you will. :) And yes, the surprise element is the best. Thank you for the sub and welcome to the channel!

Excellent video buddy! @6:00 mark you mention expectation due to watching it from other mtb'ers POV. On any trail I ride, I go expecting nothing except for an open mind. What helps me for any expectation is looking at elevation graphs on certain trails to see how steep the grades are on the climb and for how long. Also how long / miles are the down hill. Either way we all have a different approach on what to expect and the style of riding we do within the trail system. However.... you and I still can admit that Captn Ahab is one of the best trails in the good ol.... US of A ;) . Cheers my friend!!

I'm totally with you. On most rides I don't do much more than glance on Trailforks and then go ride it. But this one was special, and it kindled the idea for the video, as a friendly reminder to other people out there who're not creators and might take trail videos at face value. And yes, Ahab freaking rocks! 🤙

I just rode Thunder Mountain last week. I went into it with very few expectations having not watched many videos about it. Boy was I treated! It was gorgeous. I walked a couple of gnarly sections because I was alone and fairly new to mountain biking, but the rest was fantastic. I didn’t see a single soul on the trail. I’ll definitely be doing this one again.

Great job on this video, great idea as well. Great production and I'll still hope to get out there and ride it. I know when I post my content, I never usually show the climbs, which I guess it's a lie too, ha. But I agree with you, the climbs are so worth the view.

Interesting perspective. KZfaq videography with clever editing is usually pretty obvious, so I don't know that the reality of a trail has ever really differed much from the actual experience for me. The Whole Enchilada, The National, trails in Blue Diamond, Flag, Sedona and Tahoe, watching videos is a pretty helpful way to prepare.

Without the filter of your expectation, this looks like a fun trail with great views. I typically have to give myself time and space regarding the latest and most awesome movies, series, album, whatever. Otherwise, I will find myself lacking enjoyment due to how hyped it is in my mind. Great video, sir.

Rode this trail for the first time blind this summer, and it turned out to be one of our favorite rides of the trip that included slick rock and Trestle bike park. I completely understand your point about expectations, maybe not knowing is what made it so great for us. I still think this is a bit of a hidden gem, just watch out for horses.
@BlackBikes

very true about the hidden gem, and yes it is in fact a really cool trail. which made it even weirder to be struggling with my expectations so much there. i've never been to trestle but it's definitely on the list!

Nice one mate... Part of the problem there is there are no Biergartens or hill-top restaurants to add that little bit if motivation for the climb... No where to enjoy a frosty and a Schnitzel before dropping into the descent. Hahaha... Nice video mate. Really well put together!

You must ride in the Alps. My friends give me 💩 for vacationing in Europe too much, but it's hard for me to explain how much I enjoy showing up to a refugio for a strudel and Frankisaner after a ride, hike or via ferrata. It makes my day. Someone needs to merge the best of the US and BC with the best of the Alps.

I just rode this trail 2 days ago. I've been wanting to ride it for 2 years. I can say it wasn't what I was expecting. I expected much more downhill, but it has a nice mix. Overall, I want to ride it again. I think next time I would take my time and pack a lunch and sit and enjoy the views.

This is a great video and concept. The trail looked plenty fun to me but you are right expectations can really be out of line from reality due to the productions we see, however; trails are often much more intimidating in person. At least for the steel gnarliness. Awesome video and yes just enjoying the experience is so important!

Really good points made here. I definitely try to manage expectations to the point where I'll try not to watch videos on certain trails before visiting. Another thing is when I do ride a trail I really enjoy I tend to really hype it up for others, which is kinda setting them up for failure I feel.
