Best Mountain Biking in Bryce Canyon, UT - Thunder Mountain

5 жыл бұрынThis is the Thunder Mountain trail near Bryce Canyon, Utah. It offers spectacular scenery for the entire 8 mile trail. The trail starts out at nearly 8,000 feet and then descends approximately 1,200 feet to the Red Canyon below. The scenery is reminiscent of the neighboring Bryce Canyon. The trail itself is not very technical but offers numerous tight switchbacks during the descent and has loose gravelly sections which might be unnerving for intermediate riders.

Yes this is a fabulous trail! It has a little if everything, spectacular scenery, flowy sections, steep switchback descents, and some occasional technical sections. One of my all time favourites!

Rode this trail in 2012 when I was 52. Decided to get into MTB at age 50. Had been doing XC stuff for about 2 years and wanted to do a couple of easier MTB tours in Utah having previously done quite a few road tours all across the western states over the preceding years. This trail was the opening day of the first tour - we were meant to do another trail but our guide said it had been closed for some reason I can't recall. I'd seen vids on YT of Thunder Mountain trail and had loved it, but knew it was well beyond me. So when we drove out to the trail head, and then saw the sign, I nearly pissed my pants! Was on a rented, but good, MTB, but was really nervous. Took it slow at first and started enjoying it - and then the switchbacks and the ridge freaked me out. Happy to say I stuck with it, kept focused, and made it with no falls ( a few dabs tho). The last 2 kms downhill was just awesome - so good I actually rode back up and did those last 2 again. the rest of the tours were a blast - having faced this trail, everything seemed easier after that, and my confidence in my bike control had increased significantly once I'd done Thunder Mountain. Wonder if I could manage it now at 62.

Nice story! The first time I rode this trail was probably in 2016 or 2017 and I rode it without a camera, was so amazed with how awesome the scenery was, I decided I needed to re-ride it with my GoPro camera, which is when I made this video in 2018. I am now 64, and have become nearly obsessed with exploring new trail, many as awesome as Thunder Mountain, so I continue to ride and hope to ride for many more years. I’ve got a bad knee now so it’s a concern but I’m still loving exploring new trails. I am also hoping to ride Thunder Mountain again later this year. Thanks for watching…and keep riding…I think it’s the fountain of youth!

I’m 65 now, been riding for 20+ years. Going to try it this weekend. Riding e mtb the last 3yrs. You think I can get away with it riding this trail? Park rangers?

@@2surferjoe I don’t know about the e-bike on the Thunder Mountain trail. But if you park at the top, and climb back up the Red Canyon bike trail, it isn’t very steep or hard. Regardless, it is definitely a great trail to ride…you don’t want to miss out on the us one!

Should be a great time of year for this ride. I’ve always needed to ride it during the October timeframe and so it’s often very cold or wet…don’t ride if it’s wet…the mud is unrideable. But it should be awesome! Thanks for watching!

In this video I am using a GoPro Hero 7, with the Hypersmooth stabilization software turned on, attached to a chest mount. However, I normally use a Hero 4 attached to an EVO SS gimbal which is even more smooth. Have a look at my White Rim Trail video for the difference. I would be interested in your opinion?

If you have a second vehicle you can shuttle between the top and bottom of the trail. Otherwise you can ride up along a trail that runs just beside highway 12 between the botttom of the trail and the gravel road that takes you to the top of the trail. If you have the Trailforks app you will see the climb trail and both top and bottom parking lots. It’s a fabulous ride and this is the perfect time of year to ride it! Enjoy!

@@Socaloverlander I don’t know about any shuttle service but maybe you can try calling a taxi. When I rode it I parked at the top then rode back up the climb trail beside the highway to the top. I think the climb took about an hour or so.

How long did it the full trail take you to complete?

It took about 2 hrs to ride from top to bottom, and if you can't shuttle and need to ride back to the top trailhead, I would add about another hour to ride back up along the trail beside the highway to the top trailhead. Good luck, it's an awesome ride!!
