This was my Super Mario...played it for hours and hours ... Growing up in Germany it was just that game the cool boys played instead of Sega Mega Drive or Super Nintendo...I remember having a lot of cracked games but this and part 2 my father purchased. I also had a gamers magazine with interviews of the Factor-5 team and Turrican was the reason I learned programming in Basic and C+. Then I went to making electronic music...the Techno & Trance scene in Germany by was incredible in the 90ies and the soundtrack of Turrican still is ok one of the best ever composed/sequenced/created. My buddy bought the actual Soundtrack CD because we enjoyed the soundtrack so much... 😂 So much fun back then...we all spent all day outside playing soccer, skateboarding, BMX stuntin' 🤣 and exploring natural preservation areas...but when it was cold or raining we meet at my parents house and played Amiga or Super Nintendo....my uncle had a ridiculous Amiga 3000 and a Neo Geo he paid tons of money for back then....fun times.

So I’m an American and know the series from Mega Turrican. As an adult who has played them all now, my favorite is probably the second game, but the first is a close second. I’m still glad I got the MegaDrive version and that it exists because I have a lot of nostalgia going back to it. Mega drive had a lot of great run and guns, and Turrican is certainly one of them!

Recently there was an interview with the main programmers and Chris Huelsbeck. What the development was like at factor five. It was a wild ride. The scrolling maps were cutting edge technology they developed, surviving on coffee to get the game done, while Chris making the soundtrack and play testers in a different room smoking weed. Can't get more 90s than this game. They now all live in the united states when they got hired and work for epicgames, I believe with taking part of developing the unreal engine and Chris moved with them, but does his own thing, still composing music.

This is by far the best ever platform shooter on the Amiga. I can´t understand why more people didn´t see it. It really had no comptetition what so ever. Awesome fluent gameplay, vivid colors, smooth animations and an AWESOME soundtrack. Most other platform shooters didn´t even have in-game music. Not only does Turrican have music, it also KICKS ASS.

"Turrican started its life in 1989, while the Berlin Wall was crumbling, as a technology demonstration for the Commodore 64 created by Manfred Trenz. As project director, I started the Amiga version around Christmas, improving on the C64 version thanks to the 16-bit prowess of the Amiga. Smooth movement in infinite directions, an unprecedented amount of action, and the level of graphics, sound and music that we wanted, seemed impossible at the time. Holger Schmidt and Achim Moller proved the world wrong with their brilliantly inventive code, surpassing every crazy goal I set out and defining arcade action for the Amiga." -- Julian Eggebrecht, director "Turrican was a true change of era for everyone involved. For me personally, it signified me having left the Commodore 64 and truly embracing the Amiga. Turrican would eventually become one of my greatest accomplishments. The inspiration ranged from Vince DiCola's incredible works to the sounds of Japanese arcade games with their ability to excite the gamers. The combination of incredible graphics, design and a rich, bold synth rock soundtrack led Turrican to become one of Amiga's most fondly beloved titles, and it never seems to ever lose its popularity." -- Chris Huelsbeck, musician

One of my first computer games, first on the C64. Yes, this was an original C64 game which was later transferred to Amiga and ST. Played parts 1 and 2 on the 64 with much joy and when I eventually got my A500, of course I played both games on that machine all over again and it was like old love renewed. Glorious days. T3 on the Amiga was not my cup of coffee, however. Cannot say why.

What made Turrican great was it had the confidence to be fun. New games lack self confidence. Turrican would let you absolutely spam your firepower across the screen and still most enemies took just one shot to kill. I was obsessed with this game on the Amiga when it was first released. Watching the play now, I don't remember that the character wasn't centered. Why would they have him to thirds of the way he is running. At lease he should have been in the centre or perhaps two thirds back seeing as most enemies are ahead.

As fun as this game looks, it seems a couple of oversights happened in that you don't seem to be able to get a power-up that refills your rolling ball ability (or whatever it's actually called), or a power-up that gives you extra time, so you actually died from timing out. And the organic alien levels actually don't give you any little power-up caches? Wow. Good thing these things were addressed in the sequels, if I recall.

I used the level maps from Hall of Light website - paste them into paint and draw diagrams and plot routes. I make regular checkpoints using save states; the way WinUAE works means I record the video in sections and just join them together - there's no gap between the segments, so there's perfect continuity 🙂

I played this recently on a PS4 collection a few months ago and felt the same at first about the difficulty. Eventually after replaying it over and over (without rewinds and save states), realised that the key is to find the extra lives. There are so many hidden that it forces you to explore and it helps enough, that I managed to finish it. There's a lot of cheap kills and a punishing timer but it's doable. I didn't see the point in continues as I'd never last long if I only had a few lives and had to restart one of the later sections such as that alien stage as it restarts you on the first stage of each area.
