Turtle Rescued and Released

Not the usual seal rescue video - instead we will be showing you the long awaited release of a loggerhead turtle. A lot of people were involved before we could release this beautiful animal, starting with Mathilde and Isabelle who found her at Pelican Point. She likely washed ashore during high tide and got lost on her way back to the water. By the time she was discovered, her shield was already sunburned and she had given up all hope. Antoine and Naude from OCN immediately came to collect her and took her to the wonderful Aquarium in Swakopmund where she could get the medical care she needed. Laramon Tours in Walvis Bay generously offered to take OCN out to the open ocean where she was returned to freedom. It was a very touching and inspiring moment when we dropped her in the water and we saw her take off like a rocket. She knew she was home. Thank you to everyone who made it happen. 🦭

That must have been the longest rescue yet- 4 months from start to finish. My heart nearly burst with happiness to see her take off like a rocket at the end 🐢🌊💙

That was amazing! Here in North Carolina on Topsail Island, we have a sea turtle hospital. It also does remarkable work. Volunteers walk the beach in early morning looking for sea turtle activity, nest. When found , they are marked and roped off so people know that there is a nest. When the babies are hatched, it's a big deal to gather and watch them head to the sea. It's a community effort that works! When turtles are healthy, they are returned to the sea, again a crowd gathers to cheer the turtle on her way! Thanks for all you do!

I’ve been able to visit both of these places - and volunteer with the Georgia Aquarium and our turtles as well. This one recovered so well - glad she recovered and returned to freedom.

I can't even imagine what you FEEL doing what you DO. I got all teary by seeing her SWIMMING SO FAST. What a beautiful gift of life you constantly give ! Thank you for all your work and your videos. You are angels (P.s. Loved your happy face when you were in the boat surrounded by your beautiful family!!) What a gift your kids have in such a wonderful father as yourself!

This brought tears to my eyes. I tend to think of you as “seal heroes” but your hearts and hands have no bounds. Once in a while we get these gems, like the whale rescue video, and I get overjoyed. How beautiful was this. Gratitude to you, the whole team and especially the aquarium for teaming up and healing this amazing creature to be put back into the ocean. I'm so glad you guys were there to help her! When she was "swimming" as you carried ber to the truck i thought she's either disoriented - or she's trying to help you get her somewhere better than where she was stuck... The Aquarium was _awesome!_ So wonderful to watch her swimming away! [Also: congrats to Tony for catching & self-correcting tnat enthusiastic "SHH-HOOT!" I have a famously ... "colorful" vocabulary, too, and i have to really curb myself at times. I get _inordinately_ proud of me when i catch it _before_ i hafta apologize, so i just wanted to acknowledge a kindred spi's good effort!]

This is another wonderful episode in the OCN series. I am so grateful to you for being able to get this poor turtle to the Aquarium for rehabilitation. Her poor scoots were so sunburnt and she was so ill that she'd not have lasted much longer on the beach. After a long rest in the big tank she looked so much better. I love how healthy and happy she looked. 🐢 It looks like everyone, including the turtle, had a great time on the boat and it was a lovely experience for the kids and the Team. ☮️❤️🦘🇦🇺

That was such a wonerfully successful rescue, with everyone concerned about this turtle's welfare. From the women who found her and called OCN, to you taking her to the aquarium with Dr, Figgener advising treatment, to rehab by the aquarium staff and then Laramon tours giving her a ride out to release her, she definitely was blessed to have so many people care for her.
