Love me some buttons. My grandmother from Italy was a seamstress. My dad taught me how to sew and my first lesson was buttons. During WWII all 16 kids had to help mom with her alterations business. My mother on the other hand was born “with a gold spoon in her mouth” as the saying goes. So dad had to teach both of us to cook, sew and iron. I fell in love with buttons at a very young age. I've collected buttons for over 40 years and have been thinking about adding some to my journals. I'd really like to see a tutorial on how best to attach a button as a closure on a journal, ie are they sewn onto the covers, hot glued, or how exactly to attach them securely. Another button lover, yay!

I just received a whole bunch of colorful buttons from my daughter-in-law, who decided she wasn't going to be able to have time to use them (our 2 grandchildren are 3 and 2). So she just brought over her 3 storage sorters and a small container full of buttons to me. I wasn't sure what I was going to be able to use them all for. NOW you've given me some great ideas!!! Thank you so much! These ideas will be a great way to not have the buttons just sit in my stash but be able to come out and be used.

Coincidentally, I just bought 2 zipper bags of buttons on eBay. One is purple buttons, the other yellow. Pre-sorted! I’m rich in buttons. Some day my daughter will be a button heiress. All of my buttons came from discarded clothing. Plus new clothing when extra buttons are included. A crazy quilter that likes making journals. It's an easy transition.

Buttons on tassels as a tassel strand all the way down strand also one or two on every other strand so they make noise when set on table or moved. I love all of your ideas. Buttons are fun and fun to search for.

Thanks for the video, finally I can use my old buttons that I inherited from my grandmother. As a child I was allowed to play with her button box, which also contained other small things, it was a true treasure box for me as a child. There are many antique beautiful buttons with beautiful images. Now I'm going to use them for my journals. Love from the Netherlands 💜🍀😘

some great ideas for buttoning up :) I inherited my gran's button tin as I loved to play in it as a child sorting the colours & Pop started me counting with buttons. Hi Liz! Thanks for sharing these wonderful ways to use buttons. I am a button collector. Please use caution with the antique/vintage ones. Because the old plastics contain formaldehyde or other chemicals they need careful storage. Mason jars look great but do not allow the buttons to breathe. They will deteriorate and once infected cannot be saved. I still use Mason jars but put tulle over the top secured with a rubber band or a hair elastic. Humidity will cause them to disintegrate, too. Who knew those cute little things require so much care?

I have all of my grandmothers old buttons. What a treasure. And I use them too.

I have a black piece of fabric (12 x12) with a backing that my grandmother sewed various buttons on. I just found it in a box yesterday and took it out to hang up in my craft room. There are a few missing so will go thru my stash of old buttons. Got a bunch from my mom plus antique store years ago.

Great ideas! I just saw where someone used buttons along the edge of a page, kind of like you would add lace, they used wire and wired the buttons on. I saw it on Pinterest...GREAT ideas!

I love the button cards, never tried to make those. I use the buttons also in the middle of the signature and put it in the string hanging from the bottom. Just used that in my latest Christmas Teddy Bear journal, video is on KZfaq. Love your button ideas Elisabeth.

I also like to buy button jars at flea markets. Touching the old shell or abalone buttons just feels good on the fingers, and is reminiscent of olden times. Would have loved to have gotten a peek at some of those journals inside!

I use a dinner fork to make the folds in ruffled fabric. I'm not sure if there is a tutorial out there but my mom taught me to do it when I was a young girl. All it amounts to is putting the fabric between the tines and turning the fork. Exact same spacing every time, and I've mastered doing it while I'm sewing on my machine. Give it a try!! 🍴🍴🍴
