Great video. It's short but has all the small details and suggestions needed. Just replaced some brake pads using this video and it was a lot of help. Good job.

Great video! Short and to the point. The only thing I would add is to blast the whole brake area with brake cleaner once you take off the drum. That way you don't inhale brake dust and also why not clean it while you have it apart? Anyhow good vid.

For a video that was only just under 5 minutes long, it is very informative!!! I am NO mechanic and I have NEVER done anything with brakes but I was able to change my brake shoes on my 04 neon using only this video. You did an awesome job with the step by step instructions!! Of course, it took me longer than 5 minutes as I kept pausing, rewinding, and rewatching but I got it done and it's perfect!! I now know how to change drum brakes...not that I ever want to again lol. The only issue I had was that the video froze for about 20 seconds while you were putting in the rear shoe... the more difficult one...than started back up again right as you got it installed lol. The audio was still there tho so I could still follow that. Great job tho... thanks so much. I watched quite a few or videos that were much less informative...more telling me what I needed to do as opposed to showing me how to do it... and they were upwards of 30 minutes or longer...shouldn't be how-to videos at all. I will look for your videos for help in the future...thanks again!!! I mean this whole-heartedly...I couldn't have done this without you lol

Thank you! Love these types of comments on my videos! All my tutorials are in this format. I'm not one of those vloggers that talk with their face on the camera the whole time and only give you pieces of information. Sorry about that! I actually edited the video that way because, just like you, that was definitely the hardest part and it took me quite a few tries and time for me to get it on as well. Very glad I was able to help you get this install done though! Drums definitely suck IMO too, way harder than pads and rotors, but you learned something out of it and obviously feel accomplished! Great job!

Thank you for making this video, the official service manual instructions tell you to put both shoes in with the upper spring and the adjuster all at once, and then I guess somehow by magic get the parking brake lever in. I spent over 2 hours trying to do it the "official" way on one side, and needed less than a half hour on the other side with your method.

Glad my video helped you save a bunch of time!
@Agent2281710 жыл бұрын
@wonfeather The old shoes will form a bit of a rut in the drum which the new set will ride inside. This causes a bit of a lip that, if you're using the old drums, can make it difficult getting them back on over the new, bigger, shoes. Once you get over the lip it should be just fine. You may have to adjust the star washer so the adjuster is shorter and then adjust them more through the hole in back once the old drums are fully on.

It might be of interest to some to take note of the slots in the adjuster rod at 1:28 , (right side) the star adjuster lever must be under the rod during installation. This is the reason for the odd shape slot,(to allow for adjuster)

If the parking break lever inside the car goes all the way up, is it possible to adjust that by turing the adjuster wheel in the drumbrakes? Or should I put more tension on the parkingbrake cables under the center console in the Dodge Neon? I have the 2nd gen, 2002 build car. I tried the adjusting wheel in the drums, but I couldn’t figure out which way to turn it.
@nukem3846 жыл бұрын
you'd def want to adjust the adjuster wheel first. its a trial and play type thing. the test is to adjust, and then spin the wheel. there should be just the slightest bit of drag from the drum brakes. thats the right spot. that way when you pull the hand brake, its lock the brakes. after you do that, you can also adjust the tension cables inside the car so you don't have to pull up the handle so high. adjuster wheel is more important though.

I don't recommend using the anti-seize, this just invites dirt and brake dust to gather. Brake shoes are generally a once in a lifetime replacement (your cars lifetime) This will most likely be the only time you open this system up, unless that is of course you did it correctly the first time. Additionally if you are going to be replacing the shoes, the wheel cylinders are only $15 each. Replace them at the same time to save yourself the headache later on and you will have the confidence that you have brand new brakes
@ericrocha27155 жыл бұрын
Do you have to bleed the brakes after you change the cylinder

@nukem3843 жыл бұрын
Changing the shoes isn't going to stop a wheel cylinder leak. If that cylinder is leaking, either the seals need to be replaced, or just getting a new wheel cylinder would probably be the easiest solution.

Still to this day I wonder why they would put drum brakes on a damn neon.

Right??? Drums are so complicated to do and IMO, less effective than pads and rotors anyway.

why not tell the people watching that to adjust them all you need to do is put the emergency brake on put it in reverse and let it roll backwards a foot or so and it will adjust, its made to adjust that way

Having the jackstand rest on the lip weld of the car not the smartest idea. Should be on the frame.
@jonobrannan74067 жыл бұрын
It's perfectly fine there. Worked in a few different shops and that's always where I was taught to put it, whether it be on a jack or a lift.
@haroldsherrill58837 жыл бұрын
wolfmansrealm1 No frame on a unibody and the lip has marked jack points that are reinforced with a little extra steel, specifically for supporting the weight of the vehicle.
@djmussy187 жыл бұрын
it does have little metal on there to support it, what i found out though is that that lip beds a little, and the paint coat chips off, and now years later, i have rust spots on the places i put jack stands, so if you dont care about rusts too much, rest it on lip..
@brandens76154 жыл бұрын
That's literally where its supposed to be on a UNIBODY car. It actually has the words place jack here.
