Well, actually you're right, I do have a good reason. One is that I like the look of it, kind of a "rougher" feel to the guitar than a clean-and-sleek look. Second reason is that 14 years ago a legendary jazz guitarist liked the way I played so he sat with me, taught me some techniques and even gave me a pack of his favorite guitar strings. While I played his guitar he changed the strings on my Takamine and left the excess strings this way. And I keep my strings like this ever since in tribute.

thanks for the slower teaching style this is the difference between a good teacher and a great teacher its the wisdom to realize that we all learn at different rates I myself have been playing and teaching for a long time and when someone rushes a piece my head just cannot keep up not everyone who plays is a born virtuoso I still use the slow and steady option with all my students

Thanks for this lesson man, I find most video lessons arent a great help but this has been fantastic especially with the tab diagrams underneath and you going through it slowly afterwards picking out all the key changes. Just starting to play fingerstyle guitar and this has been so useful.

You bring back my passion for music! I studied piano, then mysteriously bought myself a guitar 6 years ago - my first year I practiced between the 2 eight hours a day, 2nd year reality hit and music was stored, 3rd year irregular practice, years 4-5 hands developed a problem (bad pain), this year reclamation! you inspire me! If you can assist with any of the following (you're a great teacher): Eric Clapton - Classical Gas Patsy Cline - Crazy Crystal Gayle - Cry Me A River, Don't it make your brown eyes blue, talkin' in your sleep Plain White T's - Hey there Delilah (my son loves this one!) Foster and Allan - Old Flames... Either way I'm a great fan and humble student....Thank you! :-)

thank you so very much for this tutorial!! i play guitar for 20 years (mostly e-guitar with pickup) and never took too much care about tricky fingerstyle picking on the acoustic guitar.. my motivation was kind of low to start with this new "chapter"because i didnt really know how to start training this thumb-bass-and-rest-of-fingers-picking-stuff without boring traing stuff... but this tutorial really made me curious for that technique... when i tried to play it at the beginning i thought it's kind of impossible for me. felt like when i was 8 years old and just started to find out which finger belongs to which string at this fingerstyle technique.. but i started to train it and now after 4 weeks dayly trying i really can play it. and it's kind of a gate to a new world of playing guitar for me. thank you so much, you do a really great job dude. your tutorials are really professional and it's cool that also guys who are not so sophisticated in music theory (guys like me for example:)) can work with it and also learn more about it by doing it. thank you very much.

Wow thank you so much for creating this tutorial. It helped me to get into song and finally to be happy with the sound. :D :D :D Well about 4:27 and struggle with *C#7b13* x4x:445 -> In short I would propose to play it like this: *x4x:465*. ..and at 6:28 (just 2 measures ahead) about the *B13* same story play *x2x:244* instead of x2x:224. Background: * In the video ya are using a *C7-shape* xR3:7Rx [x32:31x]. Applied to C# it'll be *x43:42x*. Fiddling in the 13th and + open B-string. You get the 'You-need-this-chord': x43:405. xR3:77d _Notes about the symbols:_ _- _*_'d'_*_ is Hexa and stands for the 13; lowercase since it's flatted;_ _- R means Root_ * The 'voicing' of the *simplified chord* you prosed in the end of explaining and that's written in the sheet version is *xRx:72d*. That'll make a *C#7/9b13*. Well there is *no 3* in there; instead you've a 9 (or sus2). To me the sound is bit moody & instable. Yeah kind of tolerable but yes it's kind of a compromise. * However applying the *A7-shape* xR5:73x (x03:03x) here to C# will be x46:46x. Now adding the 13 (and as usual 'spare off' the 5th) and we got: *x4x:465* ! Voicing will be xRx:73d. And this one now is a clean *C#7b13*. Simple to play and sounds nicer too me. Okay thanks for reading. If you liked this - vote for it. That'll keep it up at the very beginning on the list of comments and preserves it form diving into the 'fog of history' as more & more new comments will arrive over the time.

Well Mr. Sandman is still tricky to me to play it on the guitar. however now that I have the chords and 'idea' I can practicing it. Started the practice session two days ago 1-2 minutes once or twice a day and slowly making process. Today I also applied it to the piano (in the key of A) wow amazing. Still needs much practice but yes I stumble and rumbled from measure to measure but got them a juicy & jazzy... @NoahoticCry: I image fingers on the Amaj7 and now the right hand **wow** - sounds nice; Now stumble somehow thought the Bm7 arpeggio and doing it again **cool**. However what now Amaj7...ReggTimeStyle...What? Well I case you really just started or like to start fingerstyle guitar with Mr. Sandman I encourage ya to put that aside for some time. And do some song like 'House of the rising sun' or if you really can't be happy playing and listen to this or some of the other common beginners tunes try 'Stars shining bright above you' also from LickNRiff. Still tough be there you've maybe a better change to 'get in'. Choose one ya really like so ya motivation about it will helps you to with the patience and persistence you'll need for practicing it. ...with 'Putting it aside' I mean you can still fiddle around on Mr. Sandman but just chose other *main song* to get into the world of playing *finger styled guitar*.

Great lesson! Intro line, first bar, when the /9 on the g-string is coming: play 4-7 (g-string), 7 (b-string) and 5 on the e-string. and the final E9 chord with 4-7-7. It's a lot easier and you have the final chrod already there when you use your 3rd and 4th finger.
