I love the way you explained the purpose and how to use tracing. You always hear and see everywhere that "tracing" is bad, but it makes so many starting artists think they should never do anything that looks like tracing. It is indeed such a good way to learn how to understand the shape of a drawing and how to build everything. Of course, do not trace art and claim it as your own, but tracing to practice and train your shape knowledge is something everyone should be doing.
@Miraihi
@Miraihi 23 күн бұрын
Tracing is good as long as you do so mindfully and for practice. There may be more or less useful types of practice, but they are never really bad for you. Also a whole lot of professional artists use 3D models to reference difficult poses. They can't allow themselves to waste time experimenting, so they essentially trace for the sketch.

the cube stuff is so true it's genuinely insane. im a beginner, i wasn't happy with how "flat" my stuff looked so i started to just spam cubes and blobs with form in perspective and after like a week my skills literally skyrocketed. I'm by no means genuinely good yet but the difference having even a small understanding of 3d space made is actually crazy. My favorite way to practice form & basic shapes is to draw a blob and then show how it bends and conforms to perspective using lines that trace the 3d "surface" of the blob. Also stacking squares gets boring so try making square mannequins, a rectangle for the ribcage, a cylinder for the waist and another rectangle for the pelvis.

The 'focusing on the curves' thing for tracing is actually such a great way of putting it! I feel like when people talk about 'good tracing' they try to make that point, but you put it in such a way thats so clear and great for using it on other artstyles!

Omg I wanna slam my face into the desk. I had NO CLUE there was such an easy way to swap between variations in your art. I have desperately needed something like these layer comps 😭 EDIT: Turns out it is a 3.0 feature, and fairly new, but I still use 1.0 because screw upgrading to those later versions 😂

If you have photoshop or other software that supports animations, you can do it in animation frames too. You don't actually need to animate anything, but most software of this type that has animations remember layers visibility as part of animation frames, so you can just use that.

Use folders! Put all your layers in a folder, duplicate the folder, edit it in one folder. It serves the same function pretty much, but does require more layers

I'm not going to lie. This has really opened my eyes to a different (better) perspective of anatomy. Coming from a person who poured over books on realistic proportions and anatomy I can say this video has done more for me (in terms of explaining things in a more simplified and easy to understand way) than I could have ever asked for. Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!!

Thank you for making this video. ❤ I struggled with form and how to make my proportions accurate and consistent. I've had this problem for a while and many other videos were giving vague ideas on how to tackle it. I knew that I could nail a pose, and not know ANYTHING about anatomy, as long as I followed the reference, and it displeased me. I planned to do commissions but doubt I could satisfy the customers I would have gotten if I didn't get anatomy, poses and form down correctly. I struggled to find a suitable video for me that made steps clear on how to properly set up a base reference with foreshortened simple shapes, how to ignore the small, insignificant curves at first and focus on the bigger picture, but yours did just that. So thank you, you have helped a fellow artist. ❤😊

I actually agree with the bit in the beginning. With so many art styles and different ways of doing stuff no ones art is every bad, some may need a bit of adjusting to help with what they are trying to do but but there is no wrong way to draw. Before i started getting into drawing id watch anime and stuff but never really consider anything about the stule or proportions, so id watch it and think everything looked normal. But after awhile i started observing the animation and style way more and noticing stuff like how the eyes positions may look really weird when your really taking a look at it but when your just watching it it never really occurs. Like certain mistakes or the slight offset of a body part may be super obvious to you as an artist, but someone else just looking at it for the first time wont even notice the features you thought were so obvious at first. The biggest thing is simply confidence. Like bob ross says they arent mistakes but happy little accidents, that can give personality to your own creation.

Actually yeah, when I started out digital art I drew for a few months without tracing, then for personal fanart, i wanted to have a specific style so i did the tracing study. I put it side by side to copy it to see if i can replicate it, but it looked off. So I traced it and noticed what I did wrong then I took the ref away and then copied side by side to see what I learned I don't trace these days because I didn't need it but it did improve my drawing a lot that I am considering doing that study again

@NonJohns
@NonJohns 26 күн бұрын
The thing that worked for me is to learn how to work and rotate cubes, cylinders, spheres, rectangular prisms and ellipsoids (funny cubes and spheres) Then you take said shapes and then draw them spinning around slowly like an animation set to draw every angle Spin one axis at a time, x y z then two, and then 3 to get a feel then you work on perspective, draw them close, then far and maybe draw them rotating! really push how BIG you can exaggerate the faces close to the viewer and really shrink the stuff far away. The more silly the stronger the effect. finally you combine the shapes together to make more complicated shapes Kinda like how a forearm is basically a cylinder with a sphere at the end and then those two shapes are blended together These are just suggestions, but the IMPORTANT takeaway is to really hone your sense of experimentation !!!Find out what parameters to mess with, and then play with the limits of those parameters!!! You'd be surprised with what you can get away with. Like how you can suggest an entire eyeball with just a single dot lol anyways. GL!
