One of the things that can help fix tension issues, etc. after completion is properly blocking the work. You can stretch certain areas a bit to resolve some issues and square things off, but of course it is not going to fix major problems. Thank you so much for your videos!

I followed a tutorial for a 0-1yo dress. I made sure I used DK cotton like it said in the tutorial, but the dress still became almost too big for my 5-year-old granddaughter, rather than her baby sister. I know that I crochet loosely, but not THAT loosely!

@@TuulaMaaria I don't understand why it happened. I mean, yarn in the same weight category can vary a lot, but not THAT much. Perhaps I got that yarn cheaply because the label was inaccurate and it should have said 4 instead of 3. I had the same issue with Aldi yarn in UK: my crochet teacher who is also a designer, said the yarn was 5 but Aldi label claimed it to be 4. I didn't know about yarn weights back then, so I just went by what the label said.

@@oakstrong1 Ok. Did you make a swatch to see if that was correct? Or did the pattern not give you how many stitches and rows make 10 cm / 4 in?

Yup….when making clothing unless it’s unfitted, you NEED to swatch.
@oakstrong1
@oakstrong1 Ай бұрын
@@TuulaMaaria A bit late answer, but I never got a notification until now that you replied. There was no information about what the swatch size should have been, only stitch counts for different age groups. The dress was my first piece of clothing and I didn't know about swatches anyway. I've watched quite a few video tutorials for clothing since. A lot of them give a stitch count for approximate sizing but no swatch. Or, they only give the measurements of a finished product, which is not that helpful. Written patterns usually come with swatch instructions, I'd the size is important, but I'm dyslexic so I prefer tutorials, particularly if I there is a new stitch for me. (Charts would be preferable but they take a lot of space, especially if they are easy-to-read size.) Now I cannot buy paper patterns anyway, or I doubt I could understand them because of the language.

I've been crocheting for over fifty years and over the more recent decades inherited an aunt's and my mom's crochet hooks, which included a few that my dad had whittled from local trees back in the 1960's (all those in addition to my own collection of hooks). This is a great topic! I'm crocheting as I'm watching, and making some of the "mistakes" you discuss here, but intentionally... I'm trying a baby bootie pattern for the first time, so I'm using scratchy, inexpensive yarn with a hook size a bit too big. And, I'm having to stop to count each round, since I almost added an extra stitch at the beginning. I've been crocheting for about 45 years, and it's good to know I'm not alone in some mistakes, and also good to know how to avoid or fix them. I'm looking forward to future mistake videos!

Thank you for the advice on the bamboo advice. I just made 3 sunhats in a bamboo/cotton blend for my grandchild. I thought they would be able to get them wet without any trouble because of the cotton in the yarn... But now I'm not sure. I will test them first before they get them wet in the pool
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 2 ай бұрын
That will depend on the amount of bamboo in the yarn. The yarns I normally use have only 25% cotton so that is not enough to keep it from being stretchy when wet. But test how your yarn behaves when it's wet!

Love your example of crocheting straight edges, that would make a great ‘short’. I also closely inspected my hooks for similarities and differences. My go to currently are Susan Bates ergonomic - long neck and long enough for my hand though sometimes catches in my project and tulip which is rather short for my hand. Clover is a good runner up and if only my new Prym hook was metal. I’m Trying Dots I found for a major price reduction, just waiting on them to arrive. Suggestions? I appreciate your tips and videos, and of course your instructions as well.

Thank you! I should really make a new short about the straight edges, the one I have is over 2 years old! However it continues to get around 50 views every day still. KZfaq is great in that content doesn't stop getting seen with time. Different countries have partly different brands of hooks. The Japanese Clover seems to be the only one been sold worldwide. Susan Bates things don't really sell in Europe, when I wanted to make the video about their finishing needles, I had to order from the US and with postage and customs the pack came to about $30. I have heard of Tulip as well and some online stores in Finland sell it, so need to try them!

This is very helpful. I like to follow technical talks. I’m wondering for the dc edges, if you do the dc two together, you are decreasing, right? I have not tried on a piece, but am visualizing.
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria Ай бұрын
No, it doesn't decrease or increase any, you make the two dc in the same stitch and crochet them together. Just to have a fatter stitch !

Very helpful tips. Thank you. I have a question though. I don’t understand what “the weight” of the yarn is, neither the gauge. I’ve seen it and it must be important but always just ignored it. 😬
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 2 ай бұрын
Weight when talking about yarn simply means how think it is. How many meters of yarn in a certain amount of weight. Some are super thin, other jumbo thick and everything in between. Yarn weights are attempts to categorise the different thicknesses. Gauge is important when you want your work to be a certain size. Two people can get different size of a crocheted piece with the same yarn, same hook and the same number of stitches and rows because one crochets tighter than the other. So we measure that and you can affect the size by changing to a bigger or smaller hook, or possibly changing the yarn you use.

Just a little question for you, are there a good supply of crochet thred in Finland? I'm from Sweden and here is the supply very bad. I started working on Irish crochet about 2 years ago, but here in Sweden you can only find threds in white, naturell, grey and black. This boring colours are good when you start to learn but now I will actually do something and I love colors. Congratulations 🎊 for 250k subscribers, it's wonderful 🥳
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! Crochet threads depends on how fine they need to be. We have all sorts of colours but they may not be fine enough, close to sewing thread thickness if they need to be. Here's one example of what there is in Finland www.menita.fi/search/?q=virkkauslanka# That store ships abroad. Or have you checked Karnaluks in Tallinn? Their online store ships abroad shop.kl24.ee/, it is hard to find things there so best just use the search "crochet thread"!

Thank you for the explanations. Yes my serious problem with knitting is UNEVEN EDGES. Just cannot get it right My edges look terrible and I hv difficulty sewing them together. Can you help or give a tutorial for knitting? Thank you so much.
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 2 ай бұрын
In knitting it often helps to slip the first stitch purl-wise without knitting, then you get a row of stitches at the edge that you can sew together if needed. In some stitches like seed/moss stitch, I knit the first stitch quite tight.

I love your tips and trix videos but I feel that I need to point out that the UK used the term single crochet till about the 1920s and back wards and that means a US slip stitch but after the 1920s and forward the term single crochet are only used in US terms.

Does anyone know where to find Tunisian double pointed crochet hooks in sizes .6-1.5? I want to create miniature crochet projects but with Tunisian style hooks but I have had no luck finding such small hook sizes.

Thank you so much, glad you found my channel! I normally publish every Sunday and have a large library of former videos so trust you will find other videos to watch. Right now I love the lacy summer top I'm working on in cotton. My favourite yarn would probably be merino wool, it feels lovely in your hands and suits so many projects.

Sometimes when I make a swatch the number count can be correct horizontally but not vertically.

Oh right, that can happen as well, one reason would be that your way of crocheting is slightly different from the one who made the pattern and stitch heights are different.

Thank you for the tips. I do not like the traveling seems in hats. Also, I always add stitches when I crochet in the round. Any help with these?
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 2 ай бұрын
Yes, it is easier even to add accidentally in the round than in the flat. Travelling seams and adding go together, both have to do with where a round ends and a new one starts. There are so many different ways, depending on what stitches are being used. But in general, you need to check that you start a new round in the same stitch where you have starting chains (if any), to me it feels like almost starting to backwards with the first stitch. And that you don't end a round in the same stitch where you started, that adds one stitch. (Would need a video, hard to explain in writing!!)

Yes, sorry about the wind noise at some places. I did film the places again where the wind seemed very distracting so that the editing programme couldn't remove it (the parts filmed inside are retakes). I realised afterwards that I had the wrong top in the microphone. But it had been so much work, and the edit removed most of it so I didn't do it again. And I'm glad that most people watch very long, the view duration is up.
