1st January 1982, just before 09.30 TVS began an eleven year tenure of TV broadcasting for ITV in the South and South East of England. The initial v/o was provided by Malcolm Brown. Followed by the first programme from TVS, with Khalid Aziz.. Introducing the new Station and some of it's presenters and plans from the forthcoming schedule. With 'Good Luck' messages from 'celebrities' including - Frankie Howerd, Peggy Mount, Little and Large, Clive Dunn, Sandy Gall and Dora Bryan. Concluding with a Christmas Carol from the children of the Pestalozzi School in Sussex. TVS made many successful programmes for the ITV Network, in the process challenging the 'Big 5' Granada, Yorkshire,
Central, Thames and LWT to control the allocation of Primetime Networked programme slots - they tried but were unsuccessful in their challenge. The Copyright in this video segment belongs to TVS. © TVS Television South 1982

That gyrocopter was actually owned by Khalid. He had the registration of it changed to G-TVSI later! Probably to name it after TVS

I quite like the very sober and unironic close up of the "Independent Broadcasting Authority" sign on the building at the start of the first programme, with Khalid Aziz starting everything off. I think that this is a good way of how an ITV station should begin - get down to the basics and give the viewer a straight-forward service. It's a million times better than Carlton's rubbish first programme 11 years later.

TVS I thought was a breath of fresh air! After the scary, haughty blandfest that was Southern, here was a franchise that lived and breathed the 80s - it was colourful, slick and cheerful, everything Southern wasn't. However it was hamstrung by its own overambition and eventually became rather self-obsessed, taking its eye off the ball and forgetting it's supposed to be serving its region, not trying to take over the world! Meridian had a completely different approach; in many ways I feel its presentation kind of married its predecessors - colourful and modern but tasteful and dignified, and Meridian put 'the south' at the heart of its personality. Your first loyalty as an ITV franchise must always be to your region and in that sense, Meridian is the best of the three

Those were the days! Khaliz was just what TVS wanted, a young fresh face and image, just right for a new ITV franchise. Carlton though, used Chris Tarrant (that programme is also on 'My Channel' on KZfaq) with varied guests in a 'live' programme. I have never rated Carlton TV. Unlike Thames, Carlton don't have 'a Talent for Television'.....

HEY YOU!!! You know what TVS, an ITV franchise that stands for? And YOU know about what TVS stands for. It is "Television South". By the way, it came from January 1st, 1982 and ended on December 31st, 1992. In the previous year, 1981, Southern Television has ended operations on December 31st on that year. After 3 decades and 34 years of broadcasting from 1958 to 1981 as an ITV franchise. And Southern Television came to an end forever.

The reason Southern 'lost' was simply to make money for the IBA. At the time all ITV franchises were renewable every 10 years or so. It was also quite political. Southern had always been a very 'safe' conservative company, it's shareholders were all media related, something which the IBA. and then Chair, Lady Plowden did not condone. As far as TVS becoming a clone of Southern, I think that a little unfair. The problem with TVS is it was too ambitious. As for job losses, most joined TVS.

What are the names of the uncredited celebrity well-wishers? I think I recognise Roy Hudd, Clive Dunn, Beryl Reid, Brian Cant, Derek Griffiths, Peggy Mount, and Frankie Howerd, but I don't know who the long=faced man or the apparent boxer are.

@GeorgeASFTHM I disagree with you!. I think the Chairman or CEO would have put the majority of viewers off! I believe the first programme from TVS was light and informative - in fact just what was needed. Thank You for your comments.

Carlton started broadcasting after midnight while TVS started at 9.25 in the morning. I would rather have a newsreader or someone serious as the first person to be seen on the air rather than some celebrity comedian or game show host a la Chris Tarrant. I would have also liked to have seen the Chairman or Chief Executive of the company make a speech or something on the air before the station went to its first programme - Just a thought of course.

@AustinSomerset TVS, in the middle of their franchise period, purchased an American TV production Company MTM (Mary Tyler Moore) obviously expecting to do well. Unfortunately the opposite happened. The purchase proved to be a very expensive mistake, and the beginning of the end of the financial stability and viability of TVS. So to answer you question, I am sure there is a lot of TVS produced material in the US. Probably will stay there too....

I never understood why STV was kicked out in favour of TVS (which was almost identical). It would have been cheaper and kinder to name-change than put people out of work and build new plant. However, both companies were better than the present ITV monolith- 'I'm a celebrity X-factor five days a week soap' station.

@GLFVIDEO I seem to remember TVS buying MTM in the USA and making rather a hefty loss. Didn't they also have a News Helicopter for a short while too? Shame they got too big, too quickly. I liked their programming, which is a million times better than Meridian saddled us with.

I do recall seeing this. But I was not overwhelmed by a sense of this being a progression from outright obselescence to heightened production values for a new age, as has been suggested. Chrissy Pollard was rather a plain-Jane. And Khalid Aziz reconciled smarm and sneer in smearing his oleagenous compound across the camera lens - as if he were trying to sell you something in a cheap jewellery shop.

Khalid Azizzzzz, is he still helping Davros on Skaro? Poor ole TVS it started out so good and was great then it all went to pieces with the acquisition of MTM and later on with Bobby Davro portraying Dusty Springfield as a drunk resulting in a court case and payout.

biglads4tw Ahhhh diddums, tough💩The Bluebell Hill transmitter was in East Sussex and technically should of been picking up Southern anyway, not sure why it was picking up London, should of got yourself another aerial fitted to your chimney pointing towards Crystal Palace, then you would of picked up London as well if you wanted Thames ( London City ) programming.

@@biglads4tw Its still in the South East and TVS was for the South and South East, region] , not the London region. Kent is in the purple area of this map of former ITV regions: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_ITV#/media/File:ITV_regional_map_1962.svg, Its possible that TVS bought the Bluebill Hill transmitter or it switched [ which I have just read that it was], the same way as Yorkshire Television bought Belmont off Anglia and North Norfolk got Yorkshire, which of course is a completely different region that East Anglia, I do remember that the Heathfield transmitter picked up London's local BBC news until a local South East BBC regional news was created for the region, when we used to live in Seaford in the 80's.
@natewilson2378
@natewilson2378 3 жыл бұрын
The Bluebell Hill transmitter was transferred to TVS so they could expand the SE region & broadcast to most of Kent, if you had another aerial you could have picked up London TV too, lots of people in various parts of the country could pick up more than one region so had multiple aerials, not much point nowadays with ITV PLC.

It would appear of the three new companies that started that sat, TVS was the more polished. That awful orb that introduced Central. And that jokingly replaced ATV. About as bad as when Carlton took over from Thames.
@jane1975
@jane1975 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Comer Central was a rebrand of ATV rather than a franchise changeover like TVS, so they probably didn’t spend much of promotional material when it relaunched. Whilst TVS probably took the time and effort into their promotions and “ win” the viewers that had been used to Southern over.

GLFVIDEO I was born in Brighton and brought up along with my sister in East Sussex, now we live in Scotland but me and my sister are also well spoken with no trace of accent or dialect, definitely no “ Estuary English “ . I much preferred the “ plummy “ speech of the announcers, they had to be articulate so that people could easily understand them, so there were no regional accents at the time. Anyone whom has an issue with that imo can get stuffed - classist rubbish!
