Loved TWA, I worked for Lockeed when the L1011 was being built .I flew Twa L1011 several times. It was one of the most advanced airplanes of its Era .

Sorry, not always. I flew Qantas and TWA with a round-the-world ticket, and Qantas was much better. TWA made a fuss with my backpack and wanted me to sign a damage waiver. One flight was overbooked. The Jumbo was some 15 years old and the food was scant.

Sorry, no. I had a RTW-ticket for Qantas and TWA many years ago. Qantas was much better. TWA had old planes, bad food and nearly turned me away because they claimed they could not accept my backpack. Qantas never had a problem with it.

Back in the day, TWA & Pan Am were the airlines of choice. Great seeing this video, I've watched it 3X so far. Thanks for sharing!

That were great times when TWA and Pan Am were still alive. Beside of Lufthansa these were my favourite airlines. It is so sad they´re gone...

I flew TWA L-1011 from Stockholm(ESSA) to NY (KJFK) via Bangor(KBGR) in oct 1989,great👍

I flew on TWA HNL-STL-MCO and MCO-STL-HNL in 1997, 747 between STL and HNL and L-1011 between STL and MCO. thanks for the video :)

The 747 and the L1011 were both phenomenal airplanes I'm lucky enough to say my dad flew for TWA 23 years and flew both those aircrafts and he loved them. I'm just wondering if in one of those clips my dad actually could have been flying one of those.

Priceless...love the L1011......one mighty fine plane. It should still be flying today as a passenger jet! I HATE government!

2 engines will always be cheaper than 3. The L1011 was not designed as a transatlantic aeroplane, the 500 series came close albeit with a reduced passenger load. Once twin engined ETOPS started the L1011 was doomed, not getting the US Air Force tanker contact didn't help. No mistake it's a magnificent aircraft built like a Mercedes-Benz there's still in action in Europe with the Royal Air Force, Flying Hospital and up until about 10 months with Thai Sky and few small operators. Quite a tribute.

RyanBomar, I keep wondering what kind of great video you'll post next.And I'll tell you,I'm never disappointed! I'm a 747 fan, and a very intrigued one as far as TWA and Pan Am are concerned, although I've only actually flown KLM 747s.Keep dusting off those old tapes,is all I can say!!

As I said, it was not "designed" to be a transatlantic aircraft and whilst they did fly across the Atlantic it was with a reduced payload. Both the L1011 & DC were designed for transcontinental services, the DC-10 ended up with a greater range via the -30 series. Both magnificent aircraft, love to be at JFK when the Fedex DC-10 start rolling in, heaven ! It doesn't get much better than thundering down the runway at ZJK in a MD-11 :-))))

That's not entirely true. The L-1011-100 had transatlantic range, and many Tristars that were -1s were converted to -50s and -100s. TWA and Delta both flew the L-1011 transatlantically for many years.

That was N93119 that broke up, not N93117. N93117 was retired from the fleet several years prior to Flight 800.

interesting how the first two inboard slats don't retract when thrust reverse is activated. i thought all the series of 747 had that feature.

the reason wide bodies had three engines was not because of old engine tech but rather the old version of ETOPS requirements. In fact thr RR RB211 were still being used on 757's until production recently ended. The l 10 11 was doomed simply because of bad luck. RR went broke trying to develope the engines and it delayed the program giving the dc10 head start on the market. Later the rule mentioned above was modified to allow only two engines. Also modern planes require 1 less man in the cockpit

TWA and PAN AM could come back...it's a matter of money and projected potential for the amount of service they can provide. How about their return under the new SST being developed?

THe L1011 is fuel inefficient. Today, aircraft like the 777, 787 and new A350's only require 2 engines and produce much lest emissions than older aircraft. I agree the L1011 is a classic airliner, but old, outdated and 3 engines in today's aviation technology is inefficient.
