Fun fact- he won the Championship/Premiership in this sport in 3 different playing positions. The only one to ever do it. To translate it in NFL terms, he won the SuperBowl as a QuarterBack, he won another SuperBowl as a RunningBack and another as a Wide Receiver 😂 And yes he can legitimately play in all playing positions and do as good if not better than players who play a specific position for the whole season. He is the legit definition of Greatest All Round Player & Greatest athlete to play this crazy high pace high speed endurance based collision sport. 40 minute halves of 2 = 80 mins or more of continuous play & no restarts after every tackle. Fun to watch once you understand the rules which isn't too hard to pick up.

Inglis was a freak athlete with great sense of the game. His stiff arm or fend as we call it, is the best in Rugby. All strength, speed and precision which is why he was always difficult to take down when you were chasing after him. If you come at him from the side he'll stiff arm you and if you come at him from the front, he'll cross his arms and bull charge straight into you. Always hated when he played against my teams.

You have to dive onto the opponent after you knock him over and hold him to complete the tackle. Otherwise once he get knocked over, he is still allowed to get up and keep running. Sliding in for a try is a safer way to touch down without dropping the ball. The video also shows him stopping opponent's tries, by him holding their ball off the ground. He was a great fullback for Souths. Fast for his size and able to break tackles and fend off players (your stiff arm). He retired a couple of years ago with injuries, but has just started playing again in England, to see how it goes.

Unlike American football, rugby requires you to actually touch the ball down to score. The dive is simply the safest way to do that. If you reach out to do so, someone could knock it out of your hands. Everyone does it.

Just incase someone didn't answer your question, when scoring a try (our version of touch down) you actually have to place the ball on the ground, even if you make it to the try line (end zone) and you don't place it on the ground then you don't score. The reason why they are sliding is because it's the easiest way to place it on the ground when they are sprinting that fast especially if they got multiple people right behind them or Infront of them. In some situations when they have lots of time they will just place it on the ground or gently touch the ground with the ball.

Gotta touch the ground with the ball in the endzone for the points to count rather than just get to the endzone like NFL. So maybe rugby scoring should be called "touchdown" instead of the NFL 😂.

Thanks for reacting to a Rugby League legend. I know some commenters have already answered some of your questions, but I'll do it again quickly. The ball needs to be placed on the ground over the try-line (in the end-zone) with downward pressure, so you have to put some weight on it and press it down or it doesn't count, and the opposition can just pick it up and run it back out. You can press it down with your hand, but the ball can be knocked away before you push it down or it can be 'held up' off the ground by a defender. If you dive on it (and slide if you're moving fast), it's almost impossible to defend unless you hold the whole player up or roll them over, so the ball doesn't touch the ground. If you knock someone down in a tackle, but they aren't held down, they can get back up and start running again, so if you stop someone with a shoulder charge, you have to then pin them down and wrap up the ball. If the ball is free, the tackled player can also pass back to a team-mate, so you have to wrap up the ball. In a one-on-one tackle, a defender can strip (steal) the ball from the tackled player and start running it back the other way. The ball is live until the ref blows the whistle and judges that the momentum of the ball / player has been stopped. The tackles you saw where someone jumped in the air were to wrap up the ball and prevent a pass to another attacker. Usually, tackles are more about stopping the ball, not the player. A smaller player will go for the ball because they know they probably can't stop a bigger player, especially from the side. One player will go high to wrap up the ball, prevent a pass and slow the attacker down, then someone else can come in low and take out their legs. Most tackles on big attackers usually involve two defenders - one going high and one going low. I hope this makes it clear. Thanks again for the reaction.
