I'm late to the party today, but good to see it's in the safe and capable hands of our Zenographer. A 20 minute stroll through the recent past of film photography is a cracking way to spend the Sunday before Christmas. With that I'd like to wish Nigel and his family a Merry Christmas, and extend it to all his viewers.

Just a heads up, some of the Pentax stuff can be a little underrated. The earlier K series stuff almost never gets talked about-it's always the K1000. The MX is notable as it is fully manual, and the smallest SLR made. Just some thoughts.

Lovely relaxed presentation and your enthusiasm shining through! Many of those cameras are familiar, the Rollei A110 was a joy to use, if only they made film for it! You certainly made me want to get my Nikon’s out of the loft and shot film again. It also shows how using manual cameras enabled you to understand the relationship between f stop, shutter speed and ASA, how many photographers with a digital camera put it on Automatic? The other thing I liked was having depth of field markers on the lenses.

I had a Nikon FM (original model) from age 18 to 55, mainly for hillwalking and travel, but all my lenses were burgled 2 years ago, so just have the body now. For some reason the body was stored separately. I think it’s my favourite camera ever, probably. Added an FA body later, but loved the simplicity of the FM. Other fave camera was the Hasselblad Xpan, which I got for a trip to Greenland and Spitsbergen. Sold it a year ago, with all the lenses, as it was a pain to have all the slides scanned, but those slides were incredible. I’m about to go digital, looking at the Fujifilm XT4, it reminds me of the old Nikon SLR’s. Love your review, cheers dude.

Having happily used a Nikon FE for 25+ years, last year I tried an Olympus OM2N and was utterly bewitched by it, resulting in buying one and some Zuiko lenses. No reflection on the Nikon, but sometimes you come across something that feels just right. Praktica cameras are without doubt the most underrated cameras and are so cheap, and you're right about the shutter position. I learnt photography on a MTL3 30+ years ago, I still have it and it still works without fault. I have a selection on M42 lenses which were also dirt cheap, and bought a M42 to Fuji X dumb adapter to use them on my XT 20. The other month I came across the Zeiss Ikon Contaflex and I'm so tempted, what a beautifully built system. These are great times for photography enthusiasts.

That was very enjoyable. All good choices. I used Olympus OM cameras though school and beyond, and had a lot of fun with them. Its true that I was the only student that used one, but I never thought that the controls were so unusual. I also like Nikkormats, maybe that's why. I just received a really nice FED-3a similar to your FED-4, that I think would be a good first film camera.

Hello Nigel, thanks a lot for the presentation of these cameras! Once, back in 1982 I had a little Agfa Tele Pocket point and shoot camera prior to my Minolta XG-M I got on Christmas 1983. The images weren’t that sharp compared to my father‘s Agfa Rapid camera with its 35mm Rapid cartridge film from the 1960s. I think your Rollei is much better in that respect. Recently I purchased a Minolta 110, which gives much sharper results, at least when I’m digitalizing the negatives myself. I intend to sell this little camera for a bargain, if you are interested, please give me a hint. Best wishes and have a nice day, Ralf

When I got back into film photography, it was a toss up between Minolta and Olympus as to which system I wanted to get into. I ended up going the way of Minolta, but I would buy an Olympus OM camera in a heartbeat. Both systems are great and with the choice of lenses that you have, you can't beat them. However, Pentax, Canon, Nikon and many other cameras are just as good and if you went with any of them, you'd be well pleased with what you had.

Very relevant epidose, as always on this channel. Regarding the Zorki 4K, it is disapointing that the speeds on the shutter dial disapear the more you use it. Great video! I'd like to add some notes. The singapore Rollei A110s, have lasted better than the German ones. Don't tell anyone, the German ones are more expensive. The Canon 110e/110ed/110ed20 like the one that was sitting under the Rollei A110 are often broken. The battery check lights, the shutter works, the wind works, but the exposure system is broken. There is a small amount of in date 110 film around, more expired but useable. The K battery used by kodak 110 cameras and unavailable this century is being reproduced, and reloadable 110 cartridges are in progress (not by me, I take no credit). The Zorki S and Zorki 2S cameras, which are Barnack Leica copies are slightly taller because of the added flash sync, and considered ugly, so they are considerably cheaper. From whom you buy, especially on eBay, is far more important than what you buy. Ignore feedback, get recemendations.

I'm rather late on this, but I'd like to add another rangefinder primarily for the American audience: the Argus C3. It is an iconic design, it's durable, and it's very cheap over here. I got mine in perfect working condition for only $21, including shipping. Only downside is that the action is rather fiddly: the shutter cocking and film advancement mechanisms are completely separate, so it's very easy to forget to advance the film and get an accidental double exposure.

I have a QL19. Picked it up in a London market for £5, looked a bit dodgy but just needed the screws holding the lens assembly to the body, tightening up.

Have you had an opportunity to shoot one of the Sigma Foveon sensor cameras yet?

I haven't - how do they compare to the more conventional bayer sensor?

@@zenography7923 I have only had the DP1 Merrill for a couple days now. The camera is slow. It demands using a tripod, but the color and detail it can achieve are incredible. I'll be looking to increase my Foveon sensor collection.

Hi, did you find 110 film?
@zenography7923
@zenography7923 2 жыл бұрын
110 film is pretty readily available, either old stock or new from Lomography, there may well be other suppliers too. Any developing lab should be able to run it through their machines, but printing may be more difficult.

This is the last comment I'll make about pronunciation because I literally can't pronounce most of German lens and camera names.

No Canon film cameras? Where they just bad? At least any mention of the Canon FTB and Canon 7 or P rangefinders would had been great.

I came back to film in 2017 with a Pentax SP500 and a Helios 44m-4. It's a basic set up but it does the basics very well indeed. I have bought other camera's since, but I always enjoy picking up my SP500 and going for a wander with it around town. There's a massive selection of cheap M42 mount lenses out there, including some hidden gems from the old East German manufacturers that make keeping it simple a real joy.

Fancy cameras are nice, but there's something very compelling about making images with the simplest possible gear!

@@zenography7923 it's so satisfying. Having a camera with lots of bells and whistles is nice, but basic cameras make you do the work yourself.
