This is the canonical continuation of Stressed Out in my head. A song about running from and dreading responsibilities, and this one talking about accountability and accepting the past and moving on, accepting that though the world is daunting, knowing you need help is a sign of strength not a sign of weakness. enjoying this song is such a miraculous experience for me because it reminds me of one essential truth: the fact that I fear relapse or the undoing of progress shows that I HAVE MADE progress in my life. fear of losing my recovery just means that I love being in recovery. if this song was released 7 years ago when I first started listening to twenty one pilots, I wouldn't have liked it because there was no relapse for me to have, I hadn't made any progress in the first place. I am so grateful to have this music to reflect with

Man this song really reminds me of my ex. We accidentally discovered 21 Pilots during a road trip to North Carolina. Now all of their songs make me think of her. For two years after our breakup I was drowning in depression. Even though she cheated I still can’t get her out of my head but I’m doing much better. If you read this, Emily, keep your line. I learned how to swim and got myself to solid ground.

I am in a similar boat. My ex and I discovered 21p in college together. He also cheated on me and became physically abusive at one point, and all the torment caused me to attempt $uicide. I would like to tell you something that has been happening to me with this song since it came out. I am a person with trichotillomania disorder, I mainly tend to pull out my eyebrows without realizing it because of my depression. This means that my appearance is never what I want and what I know I can achieve, and in many moments I can't even look at myself in a mirror. It's very frustrating to feel months of progress crumble due to an anxiety attack. From the first time I heard Backslide, I was able to interpret parts of the lyrics from a side of self-love. The pre-chorus "I don't wanna backslide to where I've started from. There's no chance I will shake this again" is helping and motivating me to keep going and not fall into the cycle again, and try to appreciate myself in the process. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. Sharing it, even anonymously, helps me a lot

This song is an internal monologue of self doubt and perseverance. The buns are coping mechanisms that we attempt to use or disregard right away, because they aren’t helpful enough. At the start of the video we see him throwing away an empty bag and going into the store, which he does again at the end, showing that he’s been in this loop for awhile, “tendencies on repeat” and through the whole ride home he’s having a mental battle thinking I cant let myself go back to my old ways look at all the progress i’ve made i’m not that person anymore, “I don’t want to backslide to where i’ve started from, theres no chance i will shake this again” feeling like theres no way we can survive it. As we grow up and face the same lessons it can be incredibly humiliating, he’s asking himself when he says “do you think that nows the time you should let go? its over my head” he entertains the thought that hes better off dead at this point since hes still struggling so bad, and hes talking to himself when he says “I shouldve loved you better” and “I’ll take anything you have if you could throw me a line” desperate for relief. Then we see him as a child running the lemonade stand, asking himself if hes happy and gotten his life together and hes able to pause for a moment of self reflection and trades coping skills- the bun for a cup of lemonade- which represents something that he loved doing as a child. He heads back out and starts spiraling again, but regardless he doesn’t give up, “strength enough for one more time, reach my hand above the tide” We have to surrender to the storm and all we can do is out best to keep trying, every moment of every day to not succumb. He could give up in defeat that the buns were soggy and destroyed but he turns around and goes back to get more and try again despite it. And lastly we all need people in our circle like Josh who will patiently continue to flip burgers while we get our buns in order, so we can enjoy the bbq of life together. At least thats how I interpreted it. |-/

I think the video simply shows our general tendency to backslide into our bad old ways, whether it's trying to get clean, kicking a bad habit, or getting out of that bad mindset. Sometimes we could feel this urge or pull (pre-chorus). We secretly fight these demons in our head (chorus) because we're determined to change something and we know this step of change we're doing is for the best (arrival at Josh's and buying again)

@@parkerking6410 I thought the thing about tøp’s MVs is that they actually do travel to the locations for filming?? Jumpsuit was filmed in Iceland, right. Granted I’m no expert on these things but a fan can dream~ The chorus I can understand, he’s in complete darkness before the storm, I can see that as a likely greenroom- these outside shots? Yes it’s easy to get the moving background by filming from a trunk, but it’s hard to determine unless specified. I have no more thoughts left for this comment, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

Many people are correlating the lyrics in backslide to Fall Away, which is totally true! But what I find even more interesting is the correlation between this song and ‘Drown’ by Tyler Joseph. One of the verses in Fall Away was taken from this song. This song speaks to a relationship between Tyler and God, where he miserably fails over and over again. Honestly the strongest line in the song to me is ‘don’t wanna do this anymore’, speaking so strongly of the back and fourth of failure we often face with our relationships. Furthermore, the song implicitly is about drowning, which is what Backslide speaks of I.e, ‘waters over my head’, ‘reach my hand above the tide’, ‘throw me a line’. Another interesting facet is that Backslide questions whether or not the person will let him drown, and Drown states “Will you wash me? Will you drown me, please?’ Just wanted to say this, as sometimes we get caught up in the lore, and Dema, and the era, but it can be nice to take things at face value and appreciate the art that goes into a song, and consider it as a single body of art that can work just as well outside of the overarching story. I say all of this just to encourage those who feel lost and broken to feel reassured. I encourage you and assure that God is ALWAYS with you, and Jesus will always keep you from drowning. If you don’t know him, I encourage you to seek him; if you have questions, feel free to ask me. Psalm 34:18 - The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit

This clip feels like a "Post Mature" Stressed out clip. When you are young and have your problems, you miss childhood and gets stressed with how the world wasn`t what you wanted it yet you pursue your dreams, but this feels like you finally achieved your dream or got over that sad moment of your life...only to realize you still have problems, there are dreams that you couldn`t realize and your heads starts torturing you for it.

@ethanb2674 24 күн бұрын
As a son of a therapist, this is the most well crafted song I've seen about mental health. The term backslide used in the song is referring to the process of mental backslide, which is defined as when someone either fractionally or fully reverts back into old behaviors due to being stressed out. I thought this was a perfect connection between Stressed Out and this song because, in the song stressed out that was his old days, and in this song he’s now in his present days and is reverting and trying to resist mental backslide. At the very end Josh is standing there flipping burgers, I feel as though this represented as Tyler was struggling with his thoughts (and still is) Josh is there waiting for him patiently, supporting him (this can be represented as he is a torchbearer); the way they had Josh directed this was for that very reason. I feel as though the buns represent how people may disregard fighting the mental backslide, we can see this by how Tyler throws away the empty burger bag in the beginning and at the end goes back to the store to get more of the burgers which are representing his efforts in trying to fight the mental backslide. Starting from the beginning Tyler says “Rate race” I feel like is referring to the people just trying to live and survive; he then says “Tendencies of repeat” which is showing his old tendencies creeping back in slowly by the repeat of past tendencies. A couple lyrics later Tyler says, “Cause I feel the pull, water’s over my head”, the pull is representing his tendencies and past behaviors pulling him back in, and the water over his head means that it’s a strong pull that is basically inescapable, a couple seconds later her says, “Reach my hand above the tide”, this is him saying that he’s trying to resist the mental backslide that is drowning his thoughts out. While it cuts to the storm (which is representing how he briefly went back into darkness of his thoughts, this can be seen as he shakes his head to snap back into reality), he can be heard saying, “I’ll take anything you have” and “If you could throw me a line” is his desperate need for relief of his thoughts taking over. The lemonade stand is personally my favorite part of the whole song because of it’s intricity; I’m going to take a shot in the dark and say the little is Tyler's old self, seeing as how the song is about mental backslide and the child represents his previous self conversing with his present self asking him, “Are you doing good?” and “Did you solve all of your problems?”, Tyler responds with, “Accidentally uncovered a new one yesterday”, meaning that he uncovered a new problem again. This may also be a shot in the dark but, the burger being traded with the lemon represents him trying to use his efforts to fight back the mental backslide. After all of this he says, “What happened to what I brushed under the rug”, is him telling his past self (supposedly) that he has been brushing his problems under a rug (in his heart) and not trying to do anything about it. In the last part of the song we can see Tyler points to us in the crowd asking, “Do you think that now’s the time” and “You should let go?” I feel this was Tyler connecting with his audience basically asking do you think now's the time you should quit trying to fight the backslide. Finally, the last part of the song can be seen Tyler dumping the soggy burgers out representing his failed attempts to overcome backslide, but then he goes back to the store and gets more burgers which recommends that he is starting over again (I think this a connection to the lyric in Next Semester where in the song he says, “Start fresh next semester” basically showing how many times he is trying to resist mental backslide and won’t stop). This is the best song in their album so far because of the message saying “You shouldn’t give up on resisting the backslide, and instead keep trying until you overcome it”. Overall, this whole song is a masterpiece |-/

As a soon to be therapist, I really appreciate this analysis. I agree with a lot of it. I also think there is a spiritual component of him reaching up to his higher power to help him and maybe asking "why haven't you left yet?" Could also be him speaking to the audience kind of like you said, asking why they are resistant. A lot of the work I do is around acceptance and accepting that, yes, you may have had a backslide, and you don't need to stay there. You can keep moving forward. Acceptance and change are two sides of the same coin and I feel that is very much represented in this song.

God is love. We all fall short and sin. Love is just and merciful. Because God is loving He must judge sin, we all stand judged. Because God is merciful He provided a way out from under the weight of the law and for us to be regenerated. If we trust Jesus shed His sinless blood, died and rose from the grave He forgives us of our sins and gives us a new heart that wants to look God as our Father genuinely and delight in Him, freeing us from being slaves to sin. The rest is our mind catching up with that reality and taking hold of His teaching and truth until He returns, or we die. We aren't saved or kept saved by obedience. We can only be lost through unbelief (trusting in our own righteousness, to be or remain saved) or blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (attributing clear works of God, healing/deliverance, to demons and Satan). Commandments aren't have to's, they are what we do because we actually want God's direction and It's what fulfills us. You can't be born again without the desire to honor God. (Works based salvation "Christians" and "lawless Christians" are both wrong.) We love because God first loved us. Jesus is God, the Son, "the first and the last", God along with God the Father "the Lord God", this title is mentioned with being tied to God in Isaiah 44:6-8, and that same is sent along with the Lord God's Spirit in Isaiah 48:11-16. Jesus further claims this title also in Revelation 1:8-17. Leave catholicism/orthodox/protestant churches that preach strife, or inform them.

From an AP article in 2022 Tyler says, “I’m always feeling like I’m moving from one place to another, whether it is literally or figuratively, mentally and spiritually,” he continued. “And a lot of the time, when you feel like you are between those two places, it feels… uncharted. Not tame. Scary. Dark. But at least it’s not where you know you’re not supposed to be. That’s what Trench has become to me. Leaving this place, I knew I shouldn’t be anymore. But just because you leave, it doesn’t mean your problems are being solved - you have a whole new list of problems trying to survive.” He foreshadowed this lyric because it's part of growing up, and being that this is the "extension" of Stressed Out, you are feeling the exact thing he is speaking. I think it's your responsibility to take this moment, look back on all of the old problems you used to face and remember how you overcame them. To re-live those victories while you are down in the trenches. How did you deal with: The awkwardness of middle school. The painful rejection in High School. The shock of reality once you graduate. The dull monotony of adulthood. The pain of death and loss. The existential dread of a finite lifetime. You can overcome all of those little by little if you have a little faith in yourself and you remember to pull on your strength from previous adversity. Not only can you do it...but you've already done it before! Anxiety is gonna do its thing...but remember - you got this! Even if you think you're "faking it" - you are proof to yourself that you've made it this far. Just a little further...

Can't tell you exactly why it strikes me.. but in Stressed Out he is "lower" because of the tricycle and he is wearing the red beanie, red backpack, and has red under his clothes. NOW in Backslide he is riding high with no red on his clothes, but he is using the red bicycle to get around. I am sure the symbolism goes much farther, but I wanted to add that to the conversation. (Not to mention the yellow stripes on the lemonade stand probably representing stopping by the banditos along his journey)

I feel like him being back on the bike in that neighbourhood is maybe symbolic of him "backsliding" into that dark headspace and time period. He's older now, the bike has changed shape but its the same red and the same struggles swept "under the rug" that are coming back

I'm unsure if anyone else has mentioned/noticed this but I am going to say it too just in case. In the beginning of the cycle a man in a blue jacket is standing to the right of the door but when the cycle repeats again the man is standing to the left of the door. I think this represents that there is always hope in breaking the cycle. Although it feels like nothing changes from one repetition to the next small things do. Eventually with enough repetitions of the cycle, attempts to make this cycle different from the last, and small changes determined by chance, these changes will add up to become big enough to completly destroy the cycle in it's tracks. This is just my interpretation. I might be looking to much into it.

There are subtleties through that shot of the front of the store too. 9 Bishops (Cigarettes?) Jim Dun's Bubble Gum (Josh's dog). I don't know about the Ned Bayou label; aside from it being a shop online for ned stuff on the door, but 9 for 21 would mean 2.3 repeating for a single bayou thing. Or 9/21 could be a release date? 21/9 outside of america. Just a random speculative theory but who knows.

Sounds like you're retrofitting your hope for change in reality onto a music video. Everyone, especially the young in colleges at the moment, believe they can change things to some utopian end vision. That isn't life and we all know it. The point is the division and no amount of cycles get rid of those at the top who take advantage of those at the bottom. Not just the top financially. Mostly it's the sociopathic, professional and expert realists with degrees at the top and the ignorant, hopeful, oversocialized yet uninformed childbrains who become the used and abused bottom. Don't let this kick you into a pit of nihilism, but let it welcome you into the real world...that isn't animated by Disney.

I do really hope that's not something that affects their music. I feel like so much od the fan base are young people going through hard times, and ofc there's nothing wrong with that, but they cling to Trench and earlier because it was sadder which is more "relatable." But it doesn't have to be - there's nothing wrong with music that's celebrating good things or talking about things getting better. It's no less real - imo it's even more real, because the sad stuff comes from the lies we tell ourselves or believe from others about life.

The rain only exists in his head, but it still affects the outside world, as the burger buns are soggy at the end. I think this is symbolism for how mental illness affects how a person can function on the outside, even if the problem starts on the inside of the mind Also, I think the flowers on the tree are some sort of trigger, and sends Tyler into a bad mental state. I relate to that because seemingly innocuous things often can trigger my depressive thoughts, and like how the music video portrays it, it just darkens everything around me. When he says "it's over my head" I think is a submission to the hopelessness and helplessness that comes along with it As someone who is learning to grow and trying to get better, the fear of "backsliding" is so real, and this is my favorite song on the album so far. It's just so relatable for me "I don't wanna backslide to where I've started from There's no chance I will shake this again 'Cause I feel the pull, water's over my head Strength enough for onе more time Reach my hand abovе the tide I'll take anything you have" I relate this to my suicidal thoughts, and how if I return to how I was when my depressing thoughts were so heavy, there is "no chance " I'd be able to make it out again. And the chorus continues this with Tyler saying he can get out of the waters just "one more time" before drowning. The flashes of light, particularly in the chorus probably reference his attempt while standing in the road, as illustrated in Next Semester. It's like the thoughts trigger and he remembers where hew as at, and everything is dark a nd scary again. It's such a difficult place to be in . I wonder if the actual lyrics is "strength enough for all of one more time" (it would fit the rhyme scheme all of rhyming with above on the next line, don't even get me started on Tylers lyrical genius). He says something in between enough and for, but doesn't really enunciate it. If that lyric is the case I really worry about his metal state, because if he doesn't think he can conquer these feelings again I fear the worst could happen. As a song writer myself, sometimes I hid words a bit because they're really just for me, I wonder if it's a case of that " If you could throw me a line I should've loved you better Do you think that now's the time You should let go? It's over my head" I relate to this part, as it looks like Tyler is just begging anyone to give him anything to continue. I have been in that place of desperation searching for absolutely anything to hold on to. He is almost condemning the people around him for not helping him more, as they are letting him go, right as he needs their support and the water is getting back "over his head " The I should have loved you better line really hits home for me, as I recently got out of a relationship and it was all my fault, and the regret I have for that. She was really good for me, and I just wasn't what I needed to be, and it's my fault that the people I love runaway from me. My therapist thinks this is thought distortion but I'm not so sure. As someone who recently deconstructed and lost their faith, I also interpret this as a cry to god. At the peak of my depression, I was begging for any sign that a god was there looking out for me. "Do you think that now's the time you should let go? " represents the idea that god is letting him go. He didn't give me anything, and it just hurt to have that part of my life decimated. I don't know what kind of god who has the power to help someone in their darkest hours and just chooses not to. "Rat race, place to place, adding weight Tendencies on repeat, innit? Benefit from a shoe with no lace Take the seat with the crease in it" For me, this is where I'm at now. Running in the rat race of capitalism trying to find a job and get my life back together. Everything seems to stay the same, every day repeats itself. The line about the shoe with no lace and the seat with a crease to me represents accepting the fact that the world isn't optimal to live in, especially for people with mental illnesses, but we have to make do with what we have. "I don't mind if it's lonely I don't mind if it's fair I don't care, you control me Leading me anywhere" To me, this is just completely giving up one's autonomy. I have been at that point where I would just do anything, let anyone tell me what to do and then do that. In my head, nothing mattered, so doing anything, even self destructive things, was justified because I would just follow where the wind took me not caring about the consequences. Also the lyrics of not minding that life isn't fair and that he's lonely, is a way of accepting the current situation. Almost apathetic to it. At 1:55 Tyler briefly rides with no hands, perhaps symbolizing this sort of reckless behavior. I guess I'm just gonna go through all the lyrics, because this song just speaks to me. "Bad place, on a hundred-dollar bass Kinda wishin' that I never did "Saturday" "Is that a stain? You should change" Are you doin' good? Did you solve all of your problems?" Thanks for asking In a way, but accidentally uncovered a new one yesterday What happened to what I brushed under the rug? I used to be the champion of a world you can't see Now I'm drowning in logistics" I think the whole 2nd verse is about how popular the band became, and how with all this success, the thought patterns haven't really gotten better, the problems have just changed or morphed into new ones. This is so relatable to me, as I think whenever I solve some problems new ones always arise. The stain to me represents both mental illness and creative freedom, as some people want the band to change their style to become more popular. This speaks to me personally, as it's as if people around me expect me to change and behave as if I don't have any reason for behaving as I do. It's like they just don't get it. To me this is perfectly represented in the video as Tyler pays for his lemonade with a burger bun. He has the money for it, as shown at the end when he buys buns for a 2nd time. It doesn't really make sense, but in tyler's mind, the bun represents so much so it is more than a cash payment. At the beginning wee see Tyler throw away something in the same manner a t the end, suggesting that this isn't the first time the buns got soggy , nor will it b e the last. This push and pull of mental illness is all but routine. I wonder if the Saturday line is referring to that maybe Tyler thinks he sold out some creative integrity for a more traditional pop sound in Saturday. I think that is a constant theme from his songs, the push between what's popular and what Tyler wants to create. I love the ending so much, because Tyler realizes he needs to go back for new buns, and Josh isn't upset. He doesn't go away, he waits for him. I think this shows how if you can find a true friend, they will help weather the storm with you, no matter what it is, or how often it happens. He even checks his phone, which I presume is to c heck and see if Tyler messaged him, he didn't expect him to be gone that long I'm not sure, just thoughts from a depressed person (edit: I appreciate everyone's kind words. I am doing okay right now mentally.)

How about this? He's looking to the trees, and still not hearing anything... "why won't you speak, where I happen to be, silent in the trees, standing cowardly". It feels to me (also a depressed/anxious/ocd person) that he is desperate to hear something to help him break the cycle and move forward for good.
