Indiam classical music is called shaastriya sangeet in Hindi. This literally means "music as a discipline." In other words, "music that is learned in a structured way as a field of study." There are two traditions of classical music in India - North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic). The two have the same origin and are fundamentally quite similar, but they do have some important differences. Essentially, with Indian classical music, you master the building blocks of music, which include the notes in an octave (swara), melodic structures (raga), rhythm structures (taal), and ornamentation techniques (alankaar). In the process, you are also taught several compositions in different ragas, set to different rhythms (taal). Eventually, you learn to express yourself musically by improvising within the framework of raga and taal, using existing compositions as a structural framework.

Music Directors fly all the way from South India to Mumbai to record songs for their movies. They always complain that she finishes each song in 10-15 minutes. They say they love to spend more time listening to her. She would finish recording in One Go. Quite Brilliant in understanding emotions in each of Indian languages, pronounce properly and emote properly. That is her forte.

Hi Daniel and Matthew, It’s lovely to see heartfelt reactions to Bollywood songs and especially to Shreya Ghoshal. And I’m sure you will get many requests from folks. Most of it will be ghastly 😀😋, but some will be good. What you’ve heard from India is really film music and that is categorised as ‘easy’ music (sugam sangeet) here in India. Then there is semi-classical music in which there’s thumri, dadra, chaiti, ghazal, natyageet and more. However, the fountainhead of it all is classical music of which we have two styles. Looking at your vlogs I’m assuming that there is perhaps some genuine interest to understand this musical idiom. So I’ve put together some web resources and some notes from my understanding of northern Indian style of classical music. You’ve connected with your emotions in the three Shreya songs. Through these links below you will get an understanding about why Shreya is able to sing like this and what are the basic concepts of this art-form. Before we go to that, to contrast Shreya's skillful and controlled playback singing, here's a full-throated singing style of an rigorously trained classical singer. It’s a unique flavour of a devotional song found in India....the romantic (even erotic) devotional song. The singer is a very fine classical artiste, Aarti Ankalikar-Tikekar. Here she’s singing something that would be termed semi-classical. You’ll find lots to comment on about the way Aartiji uses her voice. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9d4YLecsJ-yg58.html Beyond the ability to sing is the ability to use the effortless mastery of singing to explore emotions and abstract concepts. You will get an introduction to that through the links of the classical masters below. The notes will give you the context. Enjoy! In case you are curious to know more, drop me a line. Cheers! Pat from Mumbai Ravi Shankar explaining ragas kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jpaWhriAzsfWYJ8.html Note: ragas are categorised in many concurrent ways. The emotive categories include: - by time of the day (more accurately by ‘prahar’ which are three hour clusters. Hence 1 day = 8 Prahars); - by the 9 rasas or moods (here en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rasa_(aesthetics)); - by season (6 seasons: grishma, varsha, sharat, hemant, sheet and vasant) Other important ways of classification are mostly technical. You may want to know about two of these: by thaat and by jaati; the classification by raaganga is fascinating too. What is dhrupad? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKh9nbSVyZzWlH0.html Note: this is the most ancient form of classical music in the subcontinent. Carnatic and North Indian classical music are derived from this fount. Some North Indian khayal-singing Gharanas like Agra Gharana and Gwalior Gharana rely more on dhrupad for defining their style of music. The other gharanas are less so. What is a raaga? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eaikeddkrbvPhGQ.html Note: swara is not a note in the western musical sense, ie. it’s not a fixed frequency. The swara changes it’s frequency based on the needs of the raaga. For instance, the ‘rishabh’ swara of Raaga Multani is higher than usual. And there are many such raagas that need higher or lower swara. It’s best to understand swara as a small and defined melodic space. But not a fixed frequency. These higher and lower musical *tones* are called ‘shruti’. They cannot be played on discrete-note instruments like the piano or the harmonium. Some maestros in vocal music: Surshri. Kesarbai Kerkar: [raga lalit, time - dawn] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJd4i8mGldO5nmw.html Ustaad. Amir Khan sahab: [raga marwa, time -early evening, possibly the most contemplative recording in existence of khayal gayaki. Raga Marwa's mood is that of an elderly person looking back with sadness at the regrets in life but without being maudlin. There is tight control on emotions] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLyBd5Rzx9Ldeqs.html Ustaad. Bade Gulam Ali Khan sahab: [raga sohini, same swaras as Marwa but totally different intent. It conveys restlessness that comes from non-consummation and peevishness even, from the film Mughal-e-azam, time - late night] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9WSZKyQrszJlWQ.html Gaan Saraswati. Kishoritai Amonkar: [raga ek-nishad bihagda, time: midnight, one of my favourites. It's a live recording from a mehfil and a youthful Kishoritai, probably from late 60s. A mehfil is usually a small intimate gathering of rasiks (aficionados)] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/acyZmNmTy53dpqM.html Pandit. Kumar Gandharva: [raga desi, time - late morning, its a complex raga, one of my personal favourites. Its emotion is that of a person pleading to be heard, a person saddened and feeling alone, asking for help. ] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZ2Adr2brtSneGQ.html Smt. Gangubai Hangal: [raga asavari, time - post dawn, a powerful, haunting and plaintive cry directed at the goddess. Gangubai was a minimalist and learnt from the same guru as Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. She was less known but was utterly compelling. This is also one of my most favourite renditions] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9OJlrxmvJa2lGg.html Pandit. Jitendra Abhisheki: [raga bhimpalasi, time: late-afternoon, this raga ushers in the evening. So the sense of looking back at the day's activities, preparing for prayer and contemplation. It is one of the 'big' ragas like Marwa, Darbari, Malkauns, Multani and Todi. Typical live performances are an hour long for these] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qMidpK2Vvq7TcX0.html Begum. Parveen Sultana: [raga jog, time- midafternoon, lovely raga with overall romantic air with just a hint of eroticism] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9aJjKVyrpiWkoE.html There are some maestros whose voice didn't record well with the microphones of that era. Arguably the greatest of our masters, Aftab-e-mousiqui. Ustaad. Faiyaaz Khan sahab was one such. His recordings exist but I wouldn't recommend any since they don't capture even a smidgeon of his awesomeness. The present times has many fantastic, and potentially great singers. If you are interested in them, let me know. Enjoy!!! Pat from Mumbai

It's supposed to be understated and easy. The effort shouldn't show. It only shows if you aren't that skilled. That's the classical tradition and we are taught that by our music teachers. So you have to practice the ornamentation and hide it in the throat. The face can't move. It's all part of the technique.

"She's acting like an instrument rather than a person..." strangely, this has echoes of what I was telling someone in a completely different context - why the film music from the era of digital remastering is mostly forgettable other than a few gems like this one. It treats the singers like yet another instrument in an avalanche of sound. There is so much processing, the singer is just part of the thing rather than the focus of it. Strange to hear you say that about a live performer as well. Though honestly, that song is so iconic in an era of largely forgettable music (see the original video for the male solos that go with it and incredible classical dancing) that drama on the stage would only distract from all that excellence. I even found her roaming around on the stage irritating. She should have done a Lata and just stood there, letting the music speak for itself. Okay, I grant you, a spotlight would be nice to go with that. lol This song isn't difficult in the usual sense of songs that use classical singing. Shreya is an incredible singer. This is not even close to her toughest song. If you break it down, her part of the tune has a lot of notes, but nothing moderate knowledge and skill couldn't rehearse up to (still takes her to deliver it like this - not at all belittling her, drawing attention to the composition). More like a well designed "wild rampage" that uses an avalanche of notes at high speed to convey a "possessed" woman reliving a legendary romance between dancers in a royal court. If you have basic music skill, the only challenge is rehearsing the speed (even harder for the male part in the original - her imaginary lover). This would be a piece of cake compared with the complex twists and turns that Hindustani classical music usually lends. It does use classical ragas vaguely, but doesn't adhere to any particular one, nor does it use twisting melodies that would be typical of a complex composition. If you know do-re-mi and are not tone deaf, you can practice your way up to the speed for this without developing any major musical knowledge (which also served to make the song hugely popular, because for such a musical masterpiece, apart from the fast singing of notes, most reasonably musical people COULD SING IT themselves right off the bat! Don't believe me - try it. You already mimiced it pretty well in the video). And yet it is such a compelling composition. The magic of this song is really in the composition and the utter out of control feeling it creates giving it the "difficulty level" and the drama rather than intricate "classical" matery (and backed to the hilt and taken further by the fantastic kathak dancing in the video). This is not usual for classical compositions aiming for drama, that will usually aim to be melodies that are difficult to master. It is just the way it is composed - the pitch, the speed and in the original version, the male voice and instruments and then the video and dancing by the actor and actress - the whole effect is an wild fantasy that is at times in a royal court and really in a now abandoned residence of an ex-royal. The overall effect for the listener becomes "What sorcery is this? "what is she up to?" "whatever is she going to do next?" - you instinctively called it "supernatural" - which is exactly perfect for the character and story to the point the video of this song freaked out a lot of superstitious people when it first launched, because of that utterly insane feeling of her being possessed being so convincing. The lack of classical intricacy and relying on speed gives it a more primitive, wild quality conjuring all that grandeur with childlike basic notes through the sheer obsession of a possessed woman. Her vocals are just one part of a masterpiece. See the original video - there is so much more magic to this song.

speaking of warm up stuffs.. classic indian music is like 99% about "behind the scene" practices and 1% about performance. You live your whole life in music. You breath music. You eat music. You sleep music. You yourself are music. Performance is only a tiny part of it all. When you get up on stage with your whole being to offer, some kind of holy mysterious power from up above takes over, posseses you. You are just the instrument now, through which the universe plays its own tune. 🙃

The trend is different in Bollywood. Singers don't usually do any dance, this song is part of the movie "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" and actors in the movie have performed Indian classical dance which was choreographed by a team of choreographers, but this type of whole production is part of Bollywood movies. Bollywood actors and actresses double as dancers for the songs. Most singers just sing, that's why when you Googled Shreya Ghoshal she's referred as playback singer.

Performing art , including singing, was always a means to merge with God in Indian subcontinent and luckily it continues to be the goal of many Indian artists. Even when the world might be singing their praise and telling them they are exceptional, they continue to work on themselves because they still haven't experienced the merging and those who have experienced it want to experience it repeatedly. So, after a point, they don't care if they own the stage or not - they are in their own world. The stage is where they feed off audience's energy and also take them through a journey to a place where they too may experience the divine. Performances were\can be spiritual experience. Performers like Shreya have imbibed humility from their gurus so that they continue to learn and inch towards divine. Their art is a means to reach the ultimate, not just for themselves but also their audience. No wonder that many a times we end up crying because we had touched a sacred land in that moment.

The song is actually from a movie named BHOOL BHULAIYA ❤️❤️ So in that movie u will see the context of the song and the acrobatics u r talking about in the form of Indian Classical Dance. Do take a look on the movie song clip, u will be blown away. ❤️😉❤️

This is a singer who has mastered Indian Classical music most probably more than 20-25 years. She can sing anything and this song has a lot of classical music in it. Nothing will add to this , in fact if she does what you are suggesting it will take away from this. You need to stop telling her to sing like a Western singer ! Widen your horizon and learn new things from a different Culture.
