I grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma. The one thing this film actually gets right is that it can go from a clear, sunny day with blue skies to almost pitch black and chaotic within just a few minutes. Tornadoes sound like freight trains, and when you're sitting in a storm shelter waiting for the storm to pass, those minutes you spend worrying if your house will still be there are very tense.

30+ year storm chaser here; terrain doesn't stop tornadoes; have seen damage paths climb a 3K ft hill, drop to the valley floor on the other side, and back up the next hill. Have seen multiple EF4's and two EF5 tornadoes. Depending on where you're at, they sound differently - from the sides, they can sound like waterfalls, they can have a hail roar just in front of it with softball and baseball sized stones. Others can have such a low frequency infrasound that you feel it in the ground and in your lungs more than your ears.

Some tornado facts: The Teton-Yellowstone tornado, rated F4, is the strongest tornado to occur in Wyoming, and it crossed the continental divide. Ic happened on July 21, 1987. The weirdest (and maybe most localized) tornado outbreak occurred on June 3, 1980, when 7 tornadoes touched down in the city of Grand Island, Nebraska, out of the same storm in around 3 hours. An unusual electrical event accompanied the tornado that struck Blackwell, Oklahoma May 25, 1955. Many people reported the funnel glowing an electrical shade of blue, and was accompanied by intense lightning activity. Several weather offices in the area also noted the storm of unusual electrical intensity. It is unknown what caused the blue glow, and it has not been observed in a tornado since then to my knowledge. The glow of the tornado is credited with warning many citizens of Blackwell of the oncoming storm. The same tornado, or a different tornado of the same intensity born from the same storm, later struck the community of Udall, Kansas.

My thoughts: As someone that grew up and still lives in Oklahoma this movie is amazing. This is still one of the scariest films i’ve seen. 2 scenes in particular still scare me the most: 1. The opening scene because that kind of stuff actually happens to people today even with advanced warning. 2. The drive-in scene because night tornadoes are probably the scariest kind of tornado you would encounter. Fun Facts about Tornadoes: 1. 18 wheelers and animals do get thrown around like toys 2. Tornado winds do in fact sound like freight trains or jets depending on who you ask 3. You can in fact hear the tornado “roar” if you listen hard enough 4. To correct @MrsMovies, tornadoes can form on hills they do not protect you fully from tornadoes (yes parts of Oklahoma have hills) 5. Most tornadoes are very “weak” and don’t last for very long 6. Oklahoma holds the record for the fastest tornado wind speed ever recorded (302 mph) 7. Oklahoma holds the record for the widest tornado ever seen (2.6 miles wide) Fun Facts about Twister (1996): 1. In Wakita, Oklahoma (a tiny town in far Northern Oklahoma) there is a museum with memorabilia from this movie since part of the movie was filmed. I think @MrsMovies would enjoy the museum since this one of her favorite films 2. In the opening scene when the TV pops on that is Gary England an actual meteorologist that worked in the Oklahoma City area for over 40 years and got to be part of the production of the film. 3. Another meteorologist was also on screen a couple of times that worked in the Oklahoma City area for over 20 years. His name is Rick Mitchell and he nows works in the DFW Metroplex currently. 4. The drive-in scene (not the parts in Melissa’s hotel room) were actually filmed at a real drive-in theater in Guthrie, Oklahoma Lastly, i want to thank @YouMeTheMovies for a great reaction you guys are on point. Mrs. Movies still has great reactions even when she knows what happens. And yes Mrs. Movies i love this movie almost as much as you do!

Something you learned to live with growing up in central Oklahoma, and gave the state some of the best weather technology years ahead of the rest of the country. Chased them, been through them, cleaned up after even more. Btw, the combines are just as expensive cause the state isn’t as “flat” as folks think, and there is a lot of irrigation used in the farmlands.

In 1996, when this movie came out and I was about 11, an F3 hit our village. Thankfully we were not home. We had gone into town for dinner and passed it on the drive. Saw it going through a field and ripping down a barn. When he got home the house was fine, but the garage was damaged and most of the trees on the property were down. Scariest part was we were playing in the garage just before we left. There were actually 3 tornadoes that day in the greater area.

A couple facts about this movie first it broke a lotta speakers in theaters because of how loud the movie was and second when bill paxton died 200 storm chasers used gps tracker blips to carve bp into corn fields as a thank you for being in the movie

Lived in Coffeyville, Kansas, right on the easrern Oklahoma border, about twenty miles from where much of this movie was filmed. The filming was a big deal around there so when the movie came out in local theaters everybody took their whole family to see it. There was a whole lot of traumatized chillun round here, lemme tell ya! 😆🤷

I remember watching Twister all the time when I was in high school. It was one of my favorites. I thought the graphics and special effects were amazing for that time. It was especially creepy watching it on a big screen TV with the tornado noises

"Melissa" plays in the original "Jersey Girl" with Dermot Mulroney. Great romantic comedy.

Great movie! Glad I just need to worry about those random earthquakes instead of tornadoes every spring.

That cow is more iconic than the movie itself. 😊

The way this movie shows the calm before a storm and all the wind and rain is so cool! I love storms and rain, so this movie is great for me.

I lived in Oklahoma (where this movie was filmed) from 1984 until 2014 and I never had a twister come close to me.
