you should google on wiki or google imagines whatever you like on the dammage its wilddddd from F0 all the way up to F5. with the latter,even the foundation of a hous or road gets ripped apart. im from the eurpean part of tornado ally (yes,europe has its own tornado ally,which is around spain,france,netherlands,benelux,germany,tjech republic) only in europe we dont get F5's,and F4's are rare but they DO happen. some years ago,luxemburgh had a F4,killed atleast 5 people,germany had a F3,netherlands had a F0 in the heart of amsterdam,and later a F1 at night in the eastern part of the netherlands.even some weeks ago we had a water twister which would of been a solid F2 if it would of come to land

The movie also inspired the next generation of Tornado scientific research, increasing warning times across USA. Bill Paxton never failed to deliver, RIP Bill.

The more I see this the more I realize Hunt's character is unlikeable. She baits, ignores, sidesteps, and only talks about Dorothy when Bill wants papers signed, then once he's along, all she wants to talk about is her 'competition'. I find it very uncomfortable as they force them together while using Chasing Tornados to distract. I'm with Jami - Outta there.

I never consider any of the variations Mary listed off as even being coffee. They are all milk and sugar with a little bit of over roasted bean to give them a coffee flavor. I always find it odd that I can walk into Starbucks or some other similar place where the younger generations think the are serving coffee, I ask what they have from East Africa, Costa Rica, or Hawaii (all beans that a real coffee house would have) and they look at me like I'm the one that's crazy.

Oh I like this, I hadn’t read your note before I posted my coffee info - lol. I didn’t comment on the length of time in the pot or “I’ll brew you a fresh pot”. I lived and Boston we had Dunkin Donuts, lines out the door and iced coffee the size of my head ! I remember when Starbucks showed up 5 doors down. That's how I saw it too, they had to get Jo where it was safe & then go back for the dog. That scene always felt so real to me, especially when her dad died, that scene scared my friends & I, so many kids in my school always talked about scary that scene was. Even now, it's still a very intense & memorable scene.

"Don't we already have tornado warnings?" "They're not good enough. They're nowhere near good enough." I'd already figured out that Helen's character was Jo as an adult..but that exchange set me up for the rest of the film.

You have to wonder though, if the dad didn't take the time to open the door and let the dog in, would he have had more time to secure the door to keep it from coming open?

I'm a Kansas boy too. Maybe 20 years back one of those armored vehicles was outside the local diner. One of the storm chasers gave me a tour. I don't know squat about tornadoes, but I'd spent 6 years as an armored vehicle crewman in the military. I tried to give this fella some advice on how to secure things, how to increase protection, how to prevent spalling, etc. This young fella just gave me a polite smile and said "Thank you." Translation, "We know what we're doin', pops." I walked away like Hooper on the pier in "Jaws" after trying to tell those guys that they're overloading the boat. I just shook my head thinking they're all gonna croak. I never saw that documentary. Maybe I should look it up, see if I recognize that armored truck. I remember when the last F5 (before they went to the Enhanced Fujita scale) ripped through Greensburg, KS. I watched it unfold live on TV. I felt completely helpless. I remember throwing a bunch of tools in the back of my truck, waiting for my girlfriend to talk me out of going down there. She didn't because she wanted to go too. I was all packed and was filling my thermos with coffee when I stopped to think. The sheriff wouldn't know me from Adam and I ain't a part of any rescue or relief team. If I went down there, I'd just get in the way. In the end, my girlfriend and I just held each other that night and cried.

People often worry about F4 tornadoes because they rip everything to shreds and leave a big mess to clean up. The nice thing about the F5 tornadoes is you don't have to worry about cleaning up the mess, because the F5 does that for you.

@@jsmithers. : Well, my understanding is the max is five. They don't go higher than that because it's a damage assessment. An f5 rating means that the storm didn't leave anything notable behind. But you can certainly have a storm with wind speeds higher than the expectation for an f5 and I do believe that has happened before.

A lot of people don't realize that the actor who played the tornado, was the same actor who played the tornado in The Wizard of Oz.

I talked to someone who lived in the area when they were filming. The production crew went around to every dealership for hundreds of miles and bought every red 4-door Ram there was. No one could get one until the new model year came out.

Yeah, places like a drive-in movie in the Midwest in the mid 90s weren't going to have cappuccino or anything of the sort. The only thing different about the coffee was regular or decaf, and back then it was assumed unless you asked for decaf, you wanted regular.

Yeah a place like that they might have 2 kinds of coffee black regular and black decaffeinated. If you want sugar or cream in it you do it yourself. If you asked for a cappuccino they would probably stare at you like you were from another planet expecting them to have that.

Also, I believe that in the 90's, in a small town on the Tornado Alley, the chances that a drive-in cinema has more than 1 kind of coffee were extremely low.

I loved her on Still Standing, that was a fun show. She was great on there. Whenever I think of Jami Gertz, I always think of her as Star in The Lost Boys & her as Melissa in Twister, both characters were so different from each other.

I am in mid Kansas and we have been through a few. My wife actually went to on work on scene at the very first EF5 tornado recorded at Greensburg. She said it was absolute devastation. She also did say she saw a house wiped completely clean off it's foundation, but sitting right next to the foundation was 2 chicken eggs completely untouched and not broken. Really weird things happen with tornadoes.

We were in one that went over Lake McConaughey in the 70s. It just happened that the next day was Father's, and my dad looked to see if the boat was ok. All he could see was the top of the windshield out of the water. The engine broke off and went under the boat, which had about 400 pounds of sand in it. The motor was never right again.

I try not to be too hard on this film. The concept of chasing tornados and the decent effects give it a undeserved pass. @19:14 that 'hail' looks like someone beat up a bag of ICE and scattered it on the road for example. It's not large enough to become 'irregular'. I went to see it because of Van Halen and I'll end there.

Yeah, there are some aspects they tried to make true to life, but other stuff is just movie silliness. Even IF those straps had held, they would have been sand-blasted by debris and it would have been near impossible to survive that.

Steve, in the ones you were driving, did the clouds go from grey to green? I was on the highway when the warning came over the car radio and about the same time the clouds changed to this really strange almost glowing, green color. Lucky, I had just passed the spot ware the tornado was going to cross the road so i put the hammer down and got out of there.
