You know watching Ray's films is a wonderful journey, but reviewing it would not give you as much internet bandwidth as would other newly released films. It is difficult to remain true to your own sensibilities, and to watch you do so is something which gives me great pleasure. ❤️ As it is, Bengali films aren't the ones people normally seek out when they are searching for regional cinema of India. However it is to be remembered it is from people like Ray, and Ritwick Ghatok did Indian cinema start reaching international acclaim. Shared, liked and commenting so that this pushes up in the algorithm. ❤️

this classism topic couldn't have been more relevant in today's time, currently the rich countries have bought 87% of all world's vaccines, and they own 3x of what they need in some cases 5x more, they are also not making the patent of the vaccines public so much more countries can manufacture vaccines because the big pharma wants to make money, sad😞. My country and south africa has been asking them to make the patent public since dec, but all the developed countries like america, britain, countries in eu, japan has been opposing it
@roshni3086
@roshni3086 3 жыл бұрын
Very relevant point, because of these big pharma monopolies, healthcare has become a purely commercial commodity, rather than a basic human right. Rich countries can afford to pay for the insanely expensive healthcare of their people, while poor countries like our country can't. There is a very good Netflix documentary called 'Fire in the Blood', - on how patents on HIV drugs contributed to millions of deaths in Africa. I think the solution to this is to encourage basic science and research in developing countries, so that one day.... we can set the terms, and hopefully they will be fair for everyone in our planet.

I can relate with you when u say the rich kid is not really a villain. He is naive, he is excited to show off his assets to the poor kid. He is playing. However he ends up driving the young kid away, and the rich kid experiences guilt. Probably his first experience of guilt. Shooting the kite down is expected from the rich kid. He is going to exercise all options at his disposal. Not thinking of the consequences. Hence the guilt. Symbolic references to US and materialism is in my opinion as insignificant as the cruel intentions in the rich kid

Loved your review! I happened to watch this short film a year ago, and the thing that stayed with me more than anything else is its many symbols and allusions. Apart from the points you mentioned, I felt the poor kid's toys and mask represent an old, "native" culture, so to speak, and the rich kid's expensive, modern (and Western) toys competing with them also represents the clash between these two cultures.

Hi, Jimmy Cage.I hope you and your family are safe & healthy in this pandemic situation .From the bottom of my heart I only have love and respect to your honest approach to understand a film...I have one friendly request..It would be interesting to know your thought on the movie-posters that you have seen of Mr. Satyajit ray's films... Mr. Satyajit Ray was also an extraordinary illustrator & calligraphy artist.. Just give it a thought..
@TheJimmyCage

Thank you so much :) I hope you and your family are safe and healthy as well! The poster that I have seen are all pretty remarkable... though it's sometimes not easy to know if a poster is the original design from the release or something that was created later on, in different countries, by other artists. In general though I have to say that I'm often times very delighted by the creativity of Indian movie posters, especially how the titles are integrated into the designs.

I saw this masterpiece today and it has left me with so many thoughts, the rich kid is drinking coke, has Micky mouse hat, and kicks a ball (sports entertainment) showing subtle day to day privilege, then the kid casually builds a tall tower (like US twin towers) it shows development but with undertone of privilege and resource abundance, then the rich kid goes from casual privilege to exertion of privilege, followed by outright greed and sadism, however when the ego breaks the ivory tower of privilege is broken by a machine (robot). The last one had me perplexed did he indicated that towers of privilege will be Desimated by machines (like planes flying in twin towers), don't know. Many more like poor kids melodious flute is over shadowed by rich kids fancy instrument but poor sound i.e. just noise, then poor kids meaningless drum beating is copied as automated drumming representing meaningless copying, then the copying of culture is quite apparent.
