The most incredible dog I ever owned was a border collie. I knew nothing of training, but he instinctively worked sheep following my hand signals. Watching him cut out a yearling ram from the small flock of about 50 sheep so a buyer could look at him was simply unreal: how he knew which ram I wanted is beyond me. The buyer said to me, "To hell with the ram, what'll you take for the dog?" The dog was with me until he died years later: there are no words to describe him.

My first dog after i'm married was a border collie. She was so incredibly smart. I loved her dearly. She disappeared after her second litter And we believe she was bitten by a copperhead , she would have never left her babies. I couldn't even watch a dog food commercial for over two years.

My 2 year old Border Collie Winston thoroughly enjoyed watching this video with his feet up on the table in front of the big screen. He tries flanking the sheep as they get close to the edge of the screen. I never see him as intent as he is when watching herding videos.

@@winstonmontgomery8211 When I was growing up my father got a German Shepherd from a cattle rancher, the dog was a puppy and never set eye on a cow. This dog was bred with my aunt's Shepherd, and we adopted one of her pups. Father and son having never seen a cow instinctively knew what to do when they came upon some open range cattle that wandered on our property. They both ran half circles around the cattle and gathered them into a group without any prompting, so yeah after so many generations I guess they just know what they're supposed to do.

We had a pet Border Collie who was not trained, but she was so smart. We had a small horse boarding business and she was so good with the horses. We allowed her to have total freedom on our 7 acres to come and go as she pleased and every morning she walked the entire perimeter never leaving our property. I still miss her after almost 40 years.😢

It’s always so fascinating to see how completely distinct each dog is. From Echos youthful energy and drive (albeit sometimes appears quite stubborn) to how Kate is clearly experienced and knows a ton of what to do and even, at times, seems to say, “ chill, Sean, I got this…”… to storms and how calm and eager to please she is…

Herding dogs like this fascinate me…they are so knowledgeable, agile, and focused. I was in Montana a few years ago when a group of cowboys was driving a large herd of cattle to a new pasture….and we were stopped on the highway as the herd was in our path. The dogs on command jumped off of the vehicles they were on, and moved that entire herd up and across the highway, and into their new grassland. It was amazing to watch those dogs…. They knew exactly where to go, what to do, and got the job done quickly. One of the cow men was riding his horse up the line of traffic and apologizing to the motorists for their delay. I told him no apology was necessary, and thanked him for the terrific show that the dogs put on for us.

Thanks for that! Just a beautiful thing to see. We have a border collie mix that my daughter rescued. Border collies don't like living as house dogs I can assure you, but it's a way better life she has now than with the previous owner who abused her. Every once in a while in her doggie dreams she'll desperately whine, shake, cry. . . I tried to wake her up when she does this, but l learned that it's just better to let her work out her dream, and then assure her that she's a good girl when she wakes up. Some people shouldn't be allowed to come within a mile of a dog! Oh well: Good girl Lena! My grand daughters are going to love your video when they come home.

That's great you rescued her from abuse. Collies also need mental stimulation as they cdn get bored without a job to do. If you can find a place where you can set up an agility course and train her with commands to go round it this will keep her mind busy as well as physical exercise to tire her out. They were bred to work, as you can see from this amazing video. So sad that people buy these Dogs and expect them to be a couch potato. I hope you can give her some of the activities that will keep her physically and mentally healthy. 🙌😻🐾🐾🐾🐾

I’ve seen Border Collies in dog shows and doing things like catching freebees, but this the first time I’ve seen them actually working. It was truly amazing watching them do what they were bred to do……herd and move live stock. Fantastic!

I got to visit your beautiful country for a month once ,~ the people were warm and kind, the land so fantastic and your history, of course, like no other. This was a wonder to watch. Godspeed to you and your family, Sean. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🐑🐕❤️

This is a master class on working collies. From the start they come off the ATV like they were shot out of a cannon then they get right to work...they never pamic the sheep and they move them so deftly and with such skill it blows my mind. The way they hold them in place at that fence break and at the gates is a thing of beauty. I tip my hat to you sir..those dogs are living there best life and the training you gave them shows through. Well done

Hi Sean; you must experience pure joy when you see the BCs take off at speed across those great distances. My "country" Border Collie Duncan lives on an island on the south west coast of Canada & loves to herd deer & watch videos of herding as well. His nemeses are the giant Ravens that have taunted him since he was little. He can run long distances at 45 Kms per hour but He can't fly or climb trees😅

At the end of his working career, I adopted a boarder collie from a farm. It was hilarious to watch him herd my wife's American Standard Poodle around the field at our home. The poodle had a good sense of humor about the whole thing.

Thank you for sharing your amazing videos! I live in Southern California and came across your videos by accident and thoroughly enjoy them! I’ve never seen border collies working like this. It’s so fascinating. I love when you show the video from the dog’s camera. And the scenery is so beautiful! You’ve enlarged my world! Thank you!
