Join us as we cross the 1136 Sand Dunes of Simpson, west to east, from Mount Dare to Birdsville via Poeppel Corner & Big Red. Across 520km an Ineos Grenadier, a FJ Cruiser with a Kayak and a few other friends we endure the challenges of the central desert and learn a cautionary tale or two.

Nice video - fun to see another FJ showing its capabilities and also a Grenadier. I'd recommend avoiding hand UHF in favour of a fixed unit with an external aerial. I've had unexpected meetings at dune crests with folk using handhelds, thinking they were being heard by others, when in fact they weren't. They could hear other cars but weren't heard by others because their radio either wasn't powerful enough and or its signal was attenuated by the car body. Handhelds are great for directing picture taking and directing drivers but not for desert channel 10 purposes.

Great advise- we were in a group of 2 or 3 and we tended to be last. But point well made!

Oh man - you guys are messed up down there - you’ve got your winter and summer all messed up, and you take a kayak on a desert trip. We need to talk about this. Actually, we need to talk about Aussies infiltrating the minds of American children with Bluey - my youngest is calling me “toots” and “big fella.” She’s turning into a middle aged male chauvinist - at 7. Great video - good to see the Grenadier out stretching its legs.

Out of curiosity what L/KM did the FJ pull? I have a 150 with the 4.0 and it's atrocious!!!

Hi. Scroll to 54 min mark… I left Mt Dare full and filled up at Birdsville- it took 88.43 litres. I have the 159 litre tank… and I took an extra 20. Made it by over 90 litres!!

I have a 2011 FJ with the original 70lt tank plus a Brown Davis 110lt auxiliary tank giving 180lt. It's completed 4 Simpson trips, the most recent in June (Madigan/Hay/QAA) probably 10 days or so before this video. Driving conditions on sand were very good (firm) after the recent rain meaning "speed & power" was rarely need crossing dunes. We covered 836km and the FJ used 130.59lt - consumption = 15.62lt/100. Contributing factors to the low consumption are: the first 150km +/- were on very good dirt road, one person on board travelling light (no heavy tents etc. - but 70lt water), driven gently and heavy right foot used very sparingly. Tyre pressures on sand ~19psi
