We are a gadget society! We love iPads, smart TV, streaming videos, smart watches, microwaves, self-driving cars, and every new gadget that comes along. I'm in that category as well. I love new toys! BUT, when it comes to my pets, I want to provide the best I can afford for their health and well being. Baked clay and a plenum you never see after it is buried isn't exactly sexy. But there is no mistaking the science and results! In this case, the baked clay, iron, and UGF IS 100% the best I can provide and will continue! I'll include my plants into that list of things that rely on me 100%. I spent a fair amount on plants and want only the best for them. Hobbyists need to wake up and look for the real science instead of advertising claims on a pretty box with a new toy. If you like gizmos, that's great and you should add other filters or whatever makes you happy, but don't skip the basics and always remember nearly every gadget has moving parts that break down and a limited life expectancy. I want my tanks to run for years without having to tear them apart to change out toys or clear out exhausted substrate or get rid of toxic bacteria. The anoxic filtration system is the only one believe will provide that long term stability. Thanks!!

I made a tank just like this a couple months ago. I made a plenum out of light diffuser, plastic mesh and a spare lift tube cut down. Working perfect. I have clown killifish, blue cherry shrimp and some bladder snails that hitched in it. I'm using a cheap plant LED ring from amazon for the light. Does well growing the crypts, dwarf sag and java moss in there. I love the magnification on that tank/beverage dispenser because everything in there is so small. I cycled with some gravel from an established tank. I had a drastic pH plunge when I first installed my BCBs in my biggest tank, down to under 6. They have over 40 pounds of oil dry in them on a 135 gallon tank, so I'm sure it was just overkill. Tank slowly stabilized around 7.0 over the course of a few months.

Absolutely stunned, I've never seen a successful tank with a male and female betta together. My question is how did you achieve this? Tanks looking amazing btw ❤

Did I miss the new TDS reading for this updated bowl with plenum? I'm curious of the improvement compared to 600 reading when you used sand. Thank you Dr. Novak for all your content!

A big huge difference using the kitty litter is at 171 TDS compared to the 600-TDS reading I got using the sand. I just tested it before I wrote you.

Thanks again! Would you say 300 or 400 are the safe threshold TDS readings to try to stay below of? I'm considering restarting my planted aquarium hobby after learning so much from your videos... just have to find the time.

I always ad some crushed coral to stabilize ph about a half cup to 50 gallon so I average about a t. to a T. of coral per gallon. As long as my ph is stable I don't have a problem. I try to not change ph at all. I get better results.

Can we use bentonite natural clumping kitty litter as substrate for growing plants. In my country I only found clumping kitty litter, there is non clumping litters but they are plant based not clay based. I have an aquarium around 7 feet long and 30" inches deep how much watt of light should I use for planted tank

I'm curious if letting the kitty litter soak in a bucket of water for say Like a week would help with the ph swings. I'm not an expert on this sort of thing, but kitty litter absorbs everything out of the water if you charge it before hand by letting it soak for say even a week with water changes throughout if that would maybe help. I'm currently letting my kitty litter soak in 2 separate buckets that I dumped an entire bottle of iron Into. But do you think that even juet letting it soak in regular water would help with the drastic ph swings?
@anoxicfiltrationplenums
@anoxicfiltrationplenums Жыл бұрын
The only thing I have done for the PH swing is add baking soda after I shut up the aquarium and then watch it for a week to see if it goes back down or stabilizes. Usually it would stabilize or I would just have to add a little bit of baking soda to the aquarium every week between water changes.

Thank you for the update. I have two questions maybe you may have covered them in another video. 1) How long on average does it take for (a) a plenum & (b) a bcb bag take to start breaking down nitrates? 2)I saw online zeolite stones being used to absorb ammonia through ion exchange. Is this the same mechanism as the kitty litter and if so can this be used in a bcb bag in a canister filter?
@anoxicfiltrationplenums
@anoxicfiltrationplenums Жыл бұрын
1) it really depends on your fish load, tank size, and a lot of other variables that can change the time limit on when it starts working. 2) some people in other countries do use Zeolite in-place of kitty litter because that's all that's available to them and it seems to be working for them.

When building a BCB what is more important, surface area or volume? Trying to decide on one large rectangular basket with water flowing around the sides or a few smaller baskets with water flowing between.
@anoxicfiltrationplenums
@anoxicfiltrationplenums Жыл бұрын
Both are important and one does not supersede the other.

@@anoxicfiltrationplenums are you implying a large cube shaped BCB will perform just as well as to several smaller cylindrical BCBs, in identical conditions? Seems hard to believe the surface area to volume ratio is not a factor in performance.
@bobs5596
@bobs5596 Жыл бұрын
@@matthewcagley3955 i would conclude that given 2 different containers of equal volume, the one with more surface area would be the better choice. but that gets into the question if a container has double the volume of another, but only 1/4 the surface area, does double the volume compensate for the lack of surface area. which might imply volume is more important than surface area.

The Plenum seems to have done the trick, the water quality appears to be much improved, no algae.

@anoxicfiltrationplenums Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's pine because the stain didn't go on like pine wood.It has to be something softer than even pine but harder than Balsa-wood.
Time to revamp the Betta container with a Plenum using Kitty Litter; easier than using sand.
