Two female fire battalion chiefs in D.C. inspire next generation

Our Profiles in Service series highlights Americans who dedicate their lives to helping others. In this installment, we focus on the only two female battalion chiefs in the Washington, D.C. fire department. Kishia Clemencia and Queen Anunay are pioneers in a department of more than 1,800 firefighters. Their goal is to give back to the city where they grew up. Jan Crawford reports.

Are you currently still in the fire department? I’ve been trying my absolutely hardest to get information and leads but recently I wasn’t prepared and took the exam for dc fire department but test scores where low so is there any way to volunteer or have some type of mentor to help those motivated to put in the work and effort? If so how can i get in contact with these people

steven kelly I ended up getting 2 books so I’m pretty confident in passing the written exam once I take it again. I just got to make sure I’m fully prepared for the physical exam now.

I stopped into DCFD Engine 3 to buy a couple of T-shirts. Chief Clemencia happened to be leaving with her Driver. Just from our brief conversation, I could tell that she is a confident Chief that her troops want to model after!

I’m very happy and proud of these women for making success and breaking barriers. However I completely disagree with comparing a firefighter to a pro athlete. Yes they both are physically demanding jobs but for completely different purposes. Being a firefighter is dangerous. Firefighting is a government job and a pro athlete works for a private league. That made no sense at all. But other than that I’m very happy for these women and I like to see women breaking barriers in different careers and proving haters wrong.
