Hey guys! We hope you enjoy our reaction to Tears For Fears! This was a hard song to listen to. Mia and I were so mad, we didn't know what to think! We are glad Tears For Fears was raising awareness about this issue that is hardly talked about! We loved the dynamic with Oleta Adam's voice, it was an incredible contrast! The vocals were spot on and the instruments really told the story! Remember, if you are in need of any support, we are here as a community! Reach out for help! We will be here to listen and support! If you'd like to see more reactions like this definitely comment down below! And as always, stay safe and stay tuned of upcoming videos! We love you guys!

Roland Orzabal, the lead singer wrote this song after watching his mother suffer abuse by his father. Tears for Fears were well ahead of its time singing about women's issues. They still perform this in concert and they still sound amazing. In fact, Roland said that his 87-year-old mother was in the audience at a recent show they did, and that she had walked him up the aisle earlier this year when he got married to his current wife. (His previous wife of 35 years sadly passed away in 2017).

I saw this song performed live in the 90s with Oleta Adams during the 'Going to California" tour. The whole concert was amazing. During the performance of Woman in Chains you could feel the emotion out in to it. Roland and Curt both grew up in abusive homes and the scars in this song are so clear. It is up there with Mad World. TFF has always been my top band of all time. A fun little piece of trivia. This song featured no other than Phil Collins on the drums. Hence, the similarities of the breakdown before "So free her..." that is similar to the beat in In The Air.

Glad you reacted to this. It's a powerful song. The singer and writer of the song, Roland Orzabal, has said in interviews he grew up watching his father abuse his mother (who was a stripper at one point) until she took the kids and left.

When I first came across your channel I figured you were just young girls that were gonna watch videos and be giddy and not be serious but you surprised the hell out of me with your wisdom. I'm a 56 year old, 6ft tall, 220 lb bald gay man that swore I'd never be stupid enough to get involved in an abusive relationship. I met, but didn't realise at the time, a narcissistic and abusive man 9 years ago and ended up not being able to escape him for 7 yrs. I was abused physically but I think the emotional abuse is what scares you the most. I only escaped when he burned my apt down and I ended up in emergency and almost died. The whole reason I'm sharing is to emphasise what you were expressing after the video. No matter what it takes, get out of the situation because you deserve better. Sorry for the rambling but your reaction affected me positively and I had to share. Thx.

Roland Orzabal, the singer of TFF and writer of this song once said this about it in an interview: "I was reading some feminist literature at the time and I discovered that there are societies in the world still in existence today that are non-patriarchal. They don't have the man at the top and the women at the bottom. They're matricentric-they have the woman at the centre and these societies are a lot less violent, a lot less greedy and there's generally less animosity... but the song is also about how men traditionally play down the feminine side of their characters and how both men and women suffer for it.... I think men in a patriarchal society are sold down the river a bit-okay, maybe we're told that we're in control but there are also a hell of a lot of things that we miss out on, which women are allowed to be"

It's AUG2022 and I never saw the video until now. 😆 Cool to see the lady behind the voice as I would wonder who was singing that part?? I always figured it was the shorter guy 🤣🤣 Some other day do TFF - Pale Shelter. The long version is good to drive thru or just jam at home. *I'm also glad yall do these listening to 🎧🎶🎧 so the base and layers are heard inside all the music yall cover. GREAT ch!! 🤝🤝🤙🇺🇸🇨🇱

you two make me feel very old lol! (I remember discovering this album in 1996 at a vintage game/music/movie store (The entire album The Seeds of Love is a outstanding album) Keep in mind this single was released during the late 1980’s the entire excess of that decade was still lingering it’s amazing the song itself was given a shot at being a single maybe that’s why Tears for Fears is in this strange “Limbo” Fans understand how amazing/important they are to music but, everyone else sort of overlooked there importance! The song is flawless heartbreaking and very honest 👍👍👍❤❤❤👍👍👍

You can’t go wrong with anything Tears For Fears ever recorded. Phil Collins played drums on Woman In Chains (Phil is not in this video!); they expected him to play his BIG signature drum sound from In The Air Tonight - which he refused to do. Oleta Adams, the guest singer, also appeared live on stage with TFF a couple of times. Although you should listen to all their albums, you definitely should listen to Head Over Heels for example, a song from their album Songs From The Big Chair. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edl4nKpemZmqqps.html

Really good, mature reaction to a lovely song by a wonderful Band. Love and Relationships can be very complicated and I am a 68-year-old Englishman from London. Every Woman is different with different feelings and emotions and most Men will never truly understand them as, often, they choose to return to a relationship that outsiders feel is not good for them and NEVER get involved. NEVER because, sometimes, couples DO want to get back but do not want to blame each other so they blame YOU, the "3rd Party" and they both feel good about themselves but NOT about you for "making things worse" or "interfering".It is an invaluable LIFE LESSON:)

I saw the song as more of a commentary on the way society at the time treated women. Her relationship looked intense but when you have to sell your body to make a way it's sure to cause turmoil in your relationship. The video didn't make the man a full on demon. There can be redemption for everyone. I didn't know this was based on any true story....so I guess there can be an answer to all these questions.

Yes I’m the context of the video, you’re correct. He doesn’t beat her but uses psychological and near physiological control to keep her “in chains”. She also feels sorry for him and that she has to be there for him, despite how badly he treats her. He sees him as a unsuccessful boxer that has nothing else. He uses her to vent his frustration and to garner her sympathy. It’s a cyclical type of relationship that makes it difficult to escape yet unhealthy for both of them to be together. So nuts.

First off, not my favourite band, but of that era, that style, they were one of the better bands in my opinion. And let us not forget the vocals of Ms Adams - holy heck does she have a magnificicent voice! As regard the theme of the song I got a slight dichotomous feel from the video, which was a bit sad. You two ladies did, however, hit the nail on the head: abuse and domestic violence, regardless of who does it and who is the target is bad and wrong and should not be allowed to continue.

The song is not really about abusive relationships, it is about women and society. He is frustrated that she is a stripper, and he is trying to persuade her to stop. The chains refer to her having to give everything she has to a world run by men: she shows her body to men as a stripper, she gives her love and her soul to her partner, but it is never enough, and it is sometimes also not possible. Women continue to be pulled at from all sides for lust and love. Freeing her is about all men stopping to make demands from women. I feel the end though is a bit of a happy ending....she manages to show her partner that she loves him, and he seems convinced and stops being frustrated, so at least he seems to free her. I doubt the men at the strip bar will free her though....

Some of what you say is correct,but it was about a physical & abusive relationship,Roland the singer & composer wrote this about his parents relationship. Also,strictly the woman in the video isn’t a “stripper”,she’s a lap or pole dancer,not necessarily taking everything off.
@voiceofraisin3778
@voiceofraisin3778 Жыл бұрын
Its not just about her. Shes not only trapped but exploiting and selling an ultra feminine image to an audience to earn money. He's also trapped in an ultra-masculine role, he's a boxer selling his body to an audience to earn money. He's also stuck in the role of having to be the controlling one at home, telling his girlfriend what she ought to do, needing the money she brings in but also wanting her at home to be the domestic wife and supporter. theyre both stuck in their roles. He's also shown as being at least low level abusive, using his strength to win arguments. The end is him with his birds, theres no expectations of how he ought to run his life, he's kind of sensitive and protective, the things society wont let him be with his work and his household. Roland Orzabels father was regularly violent to his mother, he saw it first hand. His point isnt only about freeing women from the threat of domestic violence but also about freeing men from societies expectations that they have to show stregnth and violence to win. So any violence you see in the song and video is meant to be very real.

Example of why NOT to get involved. Just listen and do nothing. TRUE STORY. A Lady friend was crying on the phone telling me about her drunken, drug-taking, useless Father of her 2 kids. She called him every bad name and was going to get OUT of that relationship and throw his things out of the door.. She made that clear, through her tears and emotions. I told her to stay calm and sleep and do what was best for her. and said I would ring the next day.. THE NEXT DAY,I rang. "Hi!" " she said, very upbeat. I asked her, gently, how she was and she replied "Perfectly FINE, THANK YOU!" "Why shouldn't I be? " and then told me that she and her Partner were FINE and implied it was none of my Business. THAT IS LIFE...

Listen to James Ingram sing "No Easy Way" but have your Kleenex handy! Beautiful and sad song from a great singer.

Reading the comments Luka is defo a song about an abusive relationship, this song is not, its about an unfortunate relationship, he has no money as possibly a poor boxer, she is earning the money by showing her body to men, its frustrating for him and she is in chains because she has little other option.

The lyric says "It's a world gone crazy keeps woman in chains"; surely that gives you a clue that it's a protest about the way some men treat women?
