Coleford is a Gloucestershire market town in the Forest of Dean. The town grew from eight or more houses in 1349 and by 1489 its first church was built. It was in 1642 that a commander of the parliamentary garrison in Coleford created the market town. For a good reason as the nearest market town of Monmouth was in Royalist control.
As with nearby Cinderford, iron working and coalmines played a great part in the importance of the town. Coleford was fortunate to have a railway, which opened in 1875. The passenger service ceased in 1929 and the line was eventually closed in 1967. Today there is a small railway museum on the site of the old station that opened in 1988.
