This is an example of a ray diagram for a double lens system in which the image from the first lens is "downstream" from the second lens. This is the case in which the image from the first lens serves as a "virtual object" for the second lens. For the first lens, the object distance and image distance are positive. If the 2nd lens were not present, the image from the first lens would have formed in a position downstream from the position of the second lens. For the second lens, the object distance (the distance from the 2nd lens to location of the image from the first lens) is negative. This negative object distance can be plugged into the thin lens equation to predict the location of the image from the 2nd lens, which is the image ultimately created by this two lens system.

Very helpful! You addressed the same part I was confused about regarding that undeflected ray to the 2nd lens that seem to came out of nowhere.

Terrific! Indeed, my college profs did not illustrate that particularly well for me (the ray seemed to come from nowhere), so I was hung up on that issue for a while. I tried to make a point of doing it here. Thanks for the note! 👍

But that last ray can make any angle with the principal axis.How did you decide that angle because there are infinite lines that can go through optical center

The center of lens 2 and the point at the top of the image from lens 1 are two points that determine a line. That line can be followed back to lens 1 and then traced back to the top of the original object.
