Not for arguing, but for addition, ‘cause this will be top comment, I would like to say my experience. I was on Amitriptyline for couple of months after half year severe depression and it helps me after couple days of using it. Increased good mood, no bad thoughts, world become bright and happy again, anhedonia made a step back, but everything still was hard to do. It’s undoubtedly gave me energy to seek the way out of depression. But, honestly, it caused hypomania to me

I asked my doctor what medication I could take to increase dopamine. She said, "Yeah, heroine. Do you want to try that?" And laughed. This was a few years ago. Are meds that increase dopamine new? Or is my doctor the problem? (Or both?) I thought her answer was inappropriate at the time, no matter what her reasoning.
@smallpseudonym2844
@smallpseudonym2844 Жыл бұрын
If you listen, she explicitly names a drug that increases Dopamine. You can thus just type "Wellbutrin discovery" and this pops up: "Bupropion was invented by Nariman Mehta of Burroughs Wellcome (now GlaxoSmithKline) in 1969, and the US patent for it was granted in 1974. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an antidepressant on 30 December 1985, and marketed under the name Wellbutrin." It's been around a long time. Depending on where you live, such as the UK, they won't prescribe it, though.

@@lil_weasel219 Not all drugs are created equal. Caffeine is one of the most addictive substances known to mankind. It's also very short acting. Comparing it to long action psychotropic medicines that don't produce the same operant conditioning is disingenuous at best.

I've recently been changed from 150mg Sertraline/day to Cymbalta 90mg/day. Cymbalta has simultaneously been worse and better. The sexual side effects of Cymbalta are horrendous, almost as bad as citalopram. I'm sleeping much better that I have in years though. Brain zap withdrawals if I forget to take one are really bad. Would wellbutrin be a better option? I've asked for Vortioxetine, but was denied.

@@iaincampbell2509 Wellbutrin only has that effect in some folks. I may have just been lucky, but have only had minor side effects. Slight weight loss, which wasn't unwelcome in my case. And slight uptick in libido. After the disaster (for me) that was SSRI's (rapid weight gain, panic attacks, complete loss of libido and appetite), Wellbutrin was a breath of fresh air. Within a week or two of taking it, I regained a significant capacity to focus (dx with ADHD/Anxiety), eliminated long bouts of "brain fog", and reduced my previously perpetual fatigue. While it doesn't seem to directly treat the emotions that come along with my anxiety, it has treated a lot of the more crippling symptoms of it. It has allowed me to be able to function normally, in particular the energy to exercise and the ability to work properly. That has created a positive feedback loop instead of the previously self-destructive anxiety coping mechanisms (In my case anxiety-related avoidance wreaked havoc on just about every aspect of my life). It's ultimately all related to the imbalance that's causing your problem to begin with. Clearly my issue was Dopamine and Norepinephrine, not Seratonin.
