I agree with the guy that posted a year ago. LITERALLY EVERY question I had regarding this device (which wasn't much) was covered, and to the point here. All the others I watched didn't cover the points I required. I have avoided using these in the past to be a "purist"... but lets face it, I am no longer 22 and playing outside for the neighborhood, or gigging much right now... and the wife isn't keen on my plexi getting cranked, or my JCM 900..... I just needed to know if the speaker sim was IR load locked (just one loaded, no others could be added) or if it was a resistor / hardware based cab / speaker sim, and if the load box REQUIRED power in order to use it for just attenuation. Perfect video, earned a sub!

Like many people who’ve commented, I admire the straightforward, exact, honest and open way you present your videos. You don’t confront us with a wall or gear, or a wall of ‘attitude’. Thank you for that alone. Additionally you are giving out a great deal of valuable information and encouragement. I have a question I wondered if you might be interested in answering. The Captor X seems mostly to do be doing what might be done with one of the better floorboards, like a Helix or a Kemper. Using sims and irs is great for home playing but many people also want the convenience of sims with the feel of a traditional amp. I’ve wondered-thinking about cheaper alternative to a Helix and Powercab-whether something like the Joyo Preamp house and a FRFR speaker mightn’t (with pedals) give a good, adaptable live platform. Do you have any thoughts on this? In any case, thank you for all the excellent work and playing on your channel.

Hi Steve, thanks a lot for the nice comment! Really glad to know that the video is useful. The Captor X is quite different from the Helix or the Kemper. The Captor X doesn't model amps or effects like the latter two. The Captor X is really designed to work with tube amps as it is a loadbox and IR loader. The main idea is to keep your traditional pedal board and tube amp unchanged, while allowing you to replace the guitar speaker cabinet by a simulation (IR) and, thus enabling you to perform and record at moderate volumes or even completely silent. In my opinion this is THE tool if you want to perform and record using a tube amp. The Helix and Kemper go more in the direction of replacing your entire rig (pedals, amp, speaker cabinet), sometimes known as ampless rig. You could do a nice ampless rig with a couple of drives, effects, and a preamp like the Joyo Preamp House into an FRFR speaker, but I haven't tried it to really comment about it. I would also highly recommend you to use an IR cabinet simulation at the end of your chain in this case. Something like the Two Notes CabM+ or the Mooer Radar or Nux Studio, this add a new dimension to the sound. I've made a video like that using a Joyo American Sound as a preamp and the Nux Cerberus for drives, effects, and the IR cabinet simulation. I think it sounded quite good for recording, so you could also feed that into an FRFR speaker for performing. In the end, I still prefer my tube amp with the Captor hahah but for budget and practical aspects, it turned out quite good. Here's the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a76BYLJezZnOhXU.html

@@TheBedroomRocker1 Thanks so much for this careful and informative reply. I suppose that once you get as far as using a pre-amp pedal, a cab sim pedal and all your other usual pedals with an FRFR cab, it starts seeming reasonable to go the whole way and use a full floorboard! I expect that in a lot of cases, our experiments with gear are mostly explorations to understand the total sound system better. You are doing much to make this process enjoyable for your viewers.

@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 4 жыл бұрын
@@HerrSchnabelewopski That is a seriously tough question hahahah When I got the Captor, I knew I wanted to use IR's with my tube amps, but at the time the only unit doing that was the Suhr Reactive Load IR (out of my league). Now the Captor X does that and much much more. It seems to be really worth the money, but 550 EUR is still quite a lot for my pockets. In the venues that I usually play, I really need a guitar cabinet, so I don't actually need the reactive load for live performance and I could just use a Torpedo C.A.B M for this (some 250EUR). The C.A.B. M can also work with pre-amp pedals, which the Captor X can't. For home recording, both C.A.B M. and Captor X would be nice to reduce my CPU load and reduce latency. But, at the moment, I do not really any of these features so badly and I'm probably sticking to the original Captor for a while. Maybe I could try a Mooer Radar or some cheaper IR loader with it.

Thanks for the nice comment! I'm glad it was useful. The regular Captor is definitely enough for recording via DAW as you can load the Wall of Sound plug-in in Cubase and use the amazing Two Notes IRs. The annoying thing is that the AC30C2 has a hardwired speaker, so you gonna need some extra cable work if you want to use the Captor as an attenuator as well.

Thanks, nice review. I use the Captor throught a Mooer Radar IR pedal and then DI/DAW. With my computer I never managed to fully get rid of the latency. That pedal is nice but also limited to "close-to-the-amp" mics. If I do the maths: 230 € for the Captor + 130 € for the radar = 360 € So let's assume the Captor X is a 200 € upgrade. Well, I think it's absolutely worth it. I am getting one for sure.
@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, latency can be really annoying! The Mooer Radar is a great for what it does and cost, but Two Notes stuff is really at other level! I totally agree that it is worth the upgrade. It is definitely more expensive, but you are really getting your money worth in useful features and great sounds. You can still use the Mooer if you ever want to have an amp-free set-up for some gigs. A downside of the Captor / Captor X is that they need an amp
@butcher_0392
@butcher_0392 4 жыл бұрын
@jbbeaudry If you are having more than 14 ms, then you have a problem with latency. If you can't comfortably play with latency equal to or lower than the one mentioned above, then you will never be able to play live, or in a band. 14 ms equals 4.8 meters away from your amp, and I don't know of any guitarist who can't deal with that. Sometimes on the forums they focus on latency in a sick way, and for guitar 8, 10 or 14 ms it is perfect.

Tried it tonight…I found 3rd party IR way better. This is just a means to get it in the box. I found a 3rd party with my amp cab and it matched ok. The bass response is not as great as a real speaker. But in a mix it works for me. It’s just weird how if you use pedals the bass response can be weird with Two Notes cabs. When I use third party stuff…it reacts similar to if I was using my real cab to this pedals. So not wonderful, but good enough. I found the companies cabs very weird if I use a Marshall in a box pedal on a 65 deluxe…it needs the Marshall cab. But if I use the 3rd party cab it reacts the same as my amp and works. It can be a little weird like I said on bass….but in a mix it’s good enough. I’ll use it for late night and guide tracks…then record real amp on weekends. I don’t think I use it on finished songs outside maybe some solos or layered tracks…does not replace a real mic for me or cab.

@@TheBedroomRocker1 yeah I found a few I liked.. for the Tone King amps I’ve been using ChopTones ones. It does a pretty good job and was imaged from an Imperial amp. Other ones I tried were Owmhammer and one more that had all the cabs more like if you were playing in a room Vs recording. Most will do mic up on the amp and mix. Some will do impulses to sound as pure as possible as if it were in the room with you. I want to do some of my own..because I have a nice mastering converter, some API and Neve pres here. Just getting the proper room is key.

Yes, that is actually a more bulky, but more versatile set-up! Since I released this video, Two Notes also updated the CabM to include a preamp section, so in my opinion it is the ultimate tool for an amp-less rig. The CabM has actually been in my list... I play mostly amateur gigs so I am often left without a mic for my cabinet and without a dedicated stage monitor... by using the CabM I could send my mic'ed cab sound to front and house to fill the room and rely on my own cabinet as stage monitor. I don't need really need a load to my amp when playing live because I still need the real cabinet... The problem is that with Covid, I am not even gigging hahah, so cannot justify the investment at the moment...

Thanks for the nice comment! Of course you can hear the guitar while you are playing, but not directly at the Captor. You have to monitor the output of your DAW using an audio interface / sound card. You connect your headphones or monitors to the audio interface. If you set your audio interface to monitor the output, you will hear the DAW output signal (processed by WoS, any other plug-ins, and other unmuted tracks). I hope that helps, let me know if you are still having doubts.

Yes! Those are also pretty good points. Even though the Wall of Sound plug-in is quite well optimized, having a dedicated CPU on the X removes CPU burden and the annoying part of setting CPU buffer right. Thanks for the comment and sorry for the late reply here. Generally at home for recording there's really not much added benefit for the Captor X. If you're okay always using your computer to run the wall of sound plugin when you want to play or record, then the normal Captor will do this. The X would give you the chance to play the amp directly through headphones, one more level of attention at-38dB, which can be handy with a 50W amp (although -20dB with a master volume amp is also useable), plus some extra features like twin tracker, additional reverb models not available in the wall of sound, midi, etc. The cab collection with the X is also more extensive. All in all I think the Captor X is worth the extra money, but strictly for home recording you don't need all of these features...

Thanks for the comment and sub! You can try it out, but I believe the -20dB attenuation on the Captor is too much for a 1W tube head. In this case (without master volume) I'd prefer an attenuator with volume control. Since the DSL1 also has an effects loop, you could also try a JHS Black Little Amp, which essentially a volume knob to place in the effects loop. My Marshall SV20H also does not have a master volume, so I use the Captor to attenuate -20dB and the JHS for the final volume control, but that's a loud 20W amp. Let me know if you try anything and what solution worked out best for you.

@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Meloanaxx! For home use they are similar, but not the same. The Captor has an in-built analog cab sim, which works but is waaaaay less realistic and flexible than the cab sim you can get with Two Notes software. If you are at home and connected to a computer, then you can turn off the cab sim in the Captor also use the Two Notes Wall of Sound software in your computer for cabinet simulation, which is the best set-up. The Captor X has an in-built digital processor that can run a Two Notes cab sim software (Torpedo Remote) by itself (without needing a computer). The Torpedo Remote is very similar to the Wall of Sound. Besides that, the Captor X has some added functions like Bluetooth, MIDI, Twin Tracker, Reverb, etc.... If you have a decent computer that can process the cab sim without latency and you do not need the additional effects of the X, then the Captor is totally enough. I hope this helps! Let me know if you still have more questions.

Hi Jim B, Sorry for the late reply. Your tube amp NEEDS to see a load. This load can be either a speaker cabinet or a load box. The Cab M is NOT a load box, so you need a speaker cab or a load box to use it with your tube amp. if you want to play the amp silently using headphones only, then you need a load box. If you use a speaker cabinet as a load, you can still use Cab M and headphones, but the speaker cabinet will produce volume... To play silently with headphones, both Captor X or Captor+CAB M will work fine. The Captor X is more convenient because it is an all-in-one unit. The Captor + Cab M is more versatile since you can also use the Cab M with pedals only and ditch your amp completely. The new software update of the Cab M also added a preamp section, so it's a really versatile unit. Finally, you can also use only the original Captor hooked up to your computer via an audio interface and then use the Wall of Sound plug-in loaded into your DAW for the cabinet simulations. If you have a good computer and audio interface to process audio without latency and you don't mind having to turn the computer and open the software every time you want to play guitar, then that's the cheapest way to go. To sum-up: I think the Captor X is the most convenient for you. The Captor + Cab M is more flexible, but you may not need that flexibility. Finally, the original Captor is the cheapest, but more limited and less convenient. Hope that helped! Let me know if you still have questions and best luck finding your gear!

Hey - I have an Orange CR120 Combo and I'm interested in the Captor products. Do you know if it would be possible to plug the captor into the extension cab plug on the combo, and use the DI sound from there to record the amp (into a cab sim of course) - or would it be better to plug the Captor in between the amp and speaker section of the combo with the attenuator in, so the Captor can get a louder signal from the amp for DI purposes? Thank you :)

Thanks for your comment Jonas. I think both options should work fine. The Captor has two speakers out with and without attenuation. However, I would definitely consult with Two Notes assistance, because the Captor is designed for 100W and the CR120 is 120W. Their support is great and usually answers very fast.

No, I'm still rocking my normal Captor as I feel it's more than enough for home studio recording. There should be no difference in sound at all. I want to bring down the volume of my Friedman Dirty Shirley Mini (20w) for use in the flat before sending it to my Line 6 Helix for re-cabbing, IRs and effects - do you think the 20db reduction is enough for us bedroom players? :)
@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 3 жыл бұрын
The -20dB can definitely bring a 15-20W amp to bedroom level. I use it with my Victory V40 (42W). Does the Dirty Shirley have a master volume? If not, I would consider something like the JHS Little Black Amp (~50 USD) in the FX Loop so that you can crank the amp and still have some control over the output volume.

@@TheBedroomRocker1 Cheers for getting back to me. The Dirty Shirley does have a master volume, but the power tubes cranked produce the best results for more saturated tones. I experimented with a passive volume pedal in the effects loop and it sounded terrible and hollow - I think its because the master volume is actually wired after the effects loop, not before it. I think im content without a load box /attenuator as using another head (Like my Blackstar HT5 or Orange Micro Dark) through the same cab does better for me. I record using a Helix anyway at home or just go crank Friedman at a studio (pre - Covid). Its all fun and games :)
@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 3 жыл бұрын
@@GabrielNacu Yes, cranked power tubes are the way to go! Specially with these amps! The issue is that the Captor only has a fixed -20dB attenuation, so you could really use some kinda of master volume to fine-tune the output level. In general I think that, for pure attenuation purposes, there are better more controllable units available. The biggest selling point of the Captor to me is really the reactive load-box and the bundled software and cabs for recording. It's really a game changer to record tube amps silently and much more affordable than other units. The Helix is definitely more convenient, but if you ever want to record your tube amps at home, the Captor is definitely an awesome choice

-20 dB is quite good to play your DRRI at home, but it will make the amp way too quiet for studio or performance. If you simply want attenuation, then get a real attenuator because it will give you a much better control over the output level. The Captor is mainly about playing your amp silently using the awesome cab simulations from Two Notes. The attenuator is a nice extra, but I would not buy the Captor just for that...

If I would buy it today, I'd actually probably go to the CAB M+! Since I've made this video, two notes added a preamp section to the CAB M making it excellent for a pedal only (no amp) rig. Also, even if I play with an amp, I typically still need my own cabinet as monitor, so I wouldn't need the Captor X as a loadbox. @@guitaqui No hahah it is still going to be louder than the strings. I used it with a Peavey Classic 20MH and it worked great for bedroom. Does your amp have a master volume? To be honest though, you should consider the Captor / Captor X primarily for the cabinet simulation via their DynIR (dynamic impulse response) technology. That is really what these products excel at! The attenuator also works great, but you do not have a lot of control over the amount of attenuation... In the Captor you only get -20dB and in the Captor X you get -20dB and -38dB. That may be too much or too little attenuation depending on your amp and what you are doing. @@guitaqui The DSL20 does have a master volume. By Master Volume I mean separate Volume and Gain controls... for more vintage amps you usually only have a Volume control (no Gain control), so, if you want gain/overdrive, you need to increase the Volume until your amp distorts. With the Captor and a DSL20, you can surely get great sounds at bedroom level and you'll have good volume control by using the Volume knob on the DSL20. In my opinion cab sim and IRs are the ultimate solution for recording tube amps at home! Just check any of my other videos... For 90% of them I use: amp -> captor -> wall of sound with cab sim. I usually get MUCH better results than when I try to stick a real microphone in front of my amp.... also with Wall of Sound I can use simulations of large 412 cabs and expensive microphones that I would never be able to afford.

@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 4 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the world of tube amps! The Kraken seems to get lots of love from high gain players... hope you'll enjoy it. The latency depends on your PC's processing power, but it should definitely not be an issue... The WoS is quite optimized and runs quite light and smooth considering its power. You will have to adjust the playback buffer settings that you usually find in your DAW settings or in the Driver settings of your audio interface. Try to reduce it until you can't feel the latency anymore or until your computer starts to crap out... As a last resource, you can use the analog cab sim on the captor and switch your interface to monitor the input. This way you get zero latency. As for the stereo panning, you can have a single track and set the panning within WoS. The stereo pan depends a lot on what you want to achieve. For just playing guitar, I like to set some close-mics 30% left and then add a room mic as far as a possible from the cab (maybe even at the rear part) set at -2dB or so and panned 70% right. This gives you the feeling of being in a room facing the cab at a slight angle and hearing room reflections in the back. If I have a busy band mix, I would not spread the guitar that much though. Thanks for the comment, but I'm not sure I understand your question. If you want to split your dry guitar and amp signal, you have to do the split before sending the signal to the amp. A simple ABY switcher will do it, you don't the Captor for that. Hi Fabio, yes. The Captor acts as the load for your Mesa Mark III (no speaker cab necessary) and then you can use the analog cab simulation and send a XLR out to the monitor speakers. You don't need a computer nor mixer nor audio interface for that, but you are stuck with one single analog cab sim. At home, instead of using the analog cab sim, you can OPTIONALLY use a computer with the Wall of Sound plug-in and load impulse responses, switch cabs, speakers, and mics, add room reverb, EQ, compression, etc. It's way way more flexible and, in my opinion, it sounds much better than the analog cab sim. The Captor X, on the other hand, has a digital processor inside. It essentially gives you the experience of a regular Captor + Computer within a single box. You can do all the same as listed above and more in a live situation without carrying a speaker cabinet nor a computer. If you are mainly use for live applications, I would definitely recommend you to go for the Captor X, because of the flexibility and quality that Impulse Responses offer over analog cab sim. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask if you still have any questions. I have a victory V 30 which in reality is 44 W. How much will 20db lower the volume do you think it would be enough for bedroom levels or even live quiet stage settings? Thanks
@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tony, yes, it will definitely be enough for that. In fact, I play a Victory V40 with the Captor in my bedroom. In high power mode I can crank the master volume to 4-5 and in low power mode maybe to 6. The Master volume in the Victory amps is also incredible and super easy to control.

The Bedroom Rocker How about for low stage volume in a live setting? If I am at 20 dB I don’t want the other instruments overwhelming me to where I can’t hear myself in my speaker monitor. Thank you very much!

@@tonymarinelli7304 I have not tried the Captor on a band setting yet. I play in a Jazz Big Band and our brass section is anything but quiet, so I do not need any attenuation... I think the -20dB may be too much for that purpose, but that depends entirely on how loud your band plays and how loud/quiet you have to be on stage. Also note that the volume that you hear on your monitors depends only on the front of house and does not depend on your amp volume. The atenuator will only reduce the volume produced by your speaker cabinet. Do you plan to use a mic'ed speaker cabinet or just some cab simulation?

The Bedroom Rocker very good points. Yes, my cab will be mild. I think I may wait for the Captor X Thanks for all of your help you’ve been very kind!
@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonymarinelli7304 Yes. The Captor X will give you more control over your attenuation (-20dB and -38dB) and ultimately you can silent your amp cabinet completely, use the impulse responses and you'll just hear yourself through the monitors. You can do the same with the regular Captor, but the analog cab sim is not as great as the digital IR's in the Captor X or C.A.B M. If you still plan to use a mic'ed up speaker cabinet on stage and just want more control over your stage volume, then a dedicated attenuator with variable load is actually your best bet! But in my opinion the Victory's output volume is already really manageable with the master volume and the low power mode. Let me know if you end up getting the Captor X! Soundwise, if someone was using only impulses inside wall of sound, they would be similar?
@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 3 жыл бұрын
Basically yes... If you are using third party IRs they will sound exactly the same. If you are using Two Notes DynIR files, they should sound very similar. The DynIR files are the same and sound the same out of the box, but the program UI, the controls and some features like reverb and enhancer are different in the Wall of Sound and in the Torpedo Remote app

Good rhythm player that can actually get a song started with a group . But I’m still unsure which one I should get. If I rock the bedroom as good as my wife would have me believe then it’s very possible I could get be giging with something soon as well.
@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 3 жыл бұрын
hahahah thanks for the nice commment! If you plan to use it for gigging, then definitely get the X. For bedroom playing you can achieve very similar results using the Two Notes Wall of Sound Plugin in your computer, so it really depends: If you want to save a few hundred bucks and prefer to set your sound using the computer and your DAW with the Wall of Sound Plug-In loaded, then the normal Captor is just enough. If you want a more all-in-one plug-and-play solution that will, for example also enable you to plug headphones directly, control via smartphone app, more attenuation, then the Captor X is much more flexible.

So for recording the Captor X is unnecessary, cheaper to just use the Captor and Wall of Sound.
@TheBedroomRocker1

Basically yes.... if you are always hooked up with a decent computer that can process audio without latency, then they are equivalent. The X still has the additional features like Bluetooth, MIDI, Reverb control, Twin Tracker, Stereo Out, etc., but if you do not need those, then the Captor is perfect. I am still using the Captor in my studio and the only situation I miss the X is when I want to play guitar at night with headphones: I can still do that with the Captor, but I need to start my computer, open DAW, load Wall of Sound plug-in, etc...

@@TheBedroomRocker1 What happens if you plug the headphones into di out on the original captor? Or if you connected it to an interface that has a headphone preamp? Would the sound be good enough for practice without a cab?
@TheBedroomRocker1
@TheBedroomRocker1 2 жыл бұрын
@@alightimages7401 that's a good question, but I haven't tried it. I'm not sure if plugging a headphone in the DI out will work as it's not intended to drive headphone speakers. The alternative with audio interface definitely works. You can turn the analog cab sim in the Captor on, plug the DI or XLR out into the audio interface input, and set the interface to monitor the input for a latency free practice. However, once you hear your amp through the DynIR cabinet simulations (available in Wall of Sound or Captor X), you won't want to use the analog cab sim on the Captor ever again 😉 it's that much of an improvement!

Isn’t this just like the torpedo live? Except more compact and cheaper?
@TheBedroomRocker1

I am not 100% familiar with the Torpedo Live as it is out of my league. They all serve as 100W reactive load. The old Captor only has an analog cab sim, whereas the Captor X and the Torpedo Live also have a DSP for using Impulse Responses. Apart from that, I guess there may be differences in the processor, connections, and the cab licenses to justify the price difference. The Torpedo Live is also clearly targeting rack units and studios, whereas the Captor, Captor X, and Cab M have a format more compatible to sit on top of amps or in pedal boards rather than rack units.

The Bedroom Rocker Yeah aside from the physical appearances, they both seem similar. I know there are a few differences, favoring towards the captor x, and best of all the captor x is significantly cheaper then the torpedo live. The thing that sold me on getting the captor x was , not only it’s size but you can get pan tracked sounds from it, so you no longer need another guitarist to play with lol. It’s just simply amazing how the evolution of guitar gear is growing. Two Notes nailed it this year.

I only have 1 post sharing some of my pre-sets for the Wall of Sound plug-in, but I have some plans to upload more stuff like updates on current videos, surveys for future videos and gear to review, also more downloadable content like pre-sets, backing tracks and eventually tabs. I wanted to watch your video, but honestly, you just reading the text off the monitor in that boomy, echoing environment is very unpleasant. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong about reading and recording a script, but if you do, why don't you just show us fullscreen footage of the material you're talking about and do a voice-over? And if you *do* want to be on camera, please learn the text. Nobody's expecting you to learn 20 pages of script and I realize you're not a native speaker. I'm not a native speaker either, but if I appear on camera, I'm not reading off a screen, I learn my lines. Anyway, that's just my input. What you do with that is completely up to you.
