In- depth review of TwoNotes Torpedo Captor / Captor X.
We go through all its features: attenuator, loadbox, speaker sim and DI, and take the included Wall Of Sound plugin for a spin. We go through basic problems, like lack of fluent volume control, impedance mismatch problems, and list accessories that you will definitely need when buying captor.
We also discuss a basic recording setup, re-amping, briefly discuss guitar amp miking.
Full Video about recording with captor vs recording with plugins vs microphones:
• Recording electric gui...
We discuss differences between Captor and Captor X, and assess which version is better for you, based on your priorities, and also compare it to Universal Audio Ox and Boss tube Amp Expander, and cheaper attenuators, such as Bugera Power soak.
We include sound samples for guitar and bass, both attenuated and non-attenuated, clean and overdrive, fingered and slap, and so on.
In general - Captor is great as a recording device, but has some problems as an attenuator.

Thanks :) Either way, I totally recommend it - I keep captor permanently connected to my audio interface, and while I still blend it with mics for 'serious' recordings, it really helped me with quick ones, or just taking musical 'notes'. I didn't expect to be that happy with it, I think Suhr will do the same for you :)

Thanks for this comprehensive run down and demo! I'm interested in the captor for my small tube bass amp. For most bass recording it would be unecessary since even if you want to use an amp, most bass amps these days are solid state so can be run silent and the nice ones have good DI's built in. However for my little 30W tube driven amp it would be lovely to also be able to run it silent.

Rheostats (what most attenuators use as a volume knob) can be a pretty unreliable, and they’re quite large. That’s why both the Two Notes Captor X, and the Fryette Power Stations avoid them (two notes by using fixed/switched attenuation steps, the power stations by just fully attenuating all the time and re amping).

Was watching review after review of the captor, in the hope to tame the ear-bleeding volume of my DSL. Your review is by far the best in every way man, well done! I am however now even less sure what to do... I am convinced that the load box will do exactly what I need, but for $100 less, I could buy a Boss Katana, with all its features and the ability to play quietly and with headphones etc. surely a lot of the load box market ends up looking seriously at katanas and Sparc’s etc?
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 3 жыл бұрын
Well, katana is pretty good, I would not switch a DSL for it - amp sims, while pretty good are still far from the real thing, and while good for practicing, they will not give you a tube-driven eargasm ;). I would say that Katana will be really good for playing on headphones, but I think the main point in captor is using the -20db output and playing via the speaker - you still get the whole real thing, but at a lower volume.

What an outstanding video! Thanks for the education on these two, Two Notes thing-a-ma-jigs. I was wondering what they were like and you completely steered me away from them. I'm just looking for the attenuation. Yes, amps with built in power soaks would seem the way to go. For attenuation I will look elsewhere. The Jet City Jettenuator isn't available even used and who knows if Soldano will make it again. The knock off version seems to be made by Bugera with their PS1 for only $100 which rivals the Rivera Rock Crusher at five times the price. I'm also looking at the Weber Mass Attenuator (go to their actual site and not someplace like Reverb where there's only a couple very old used models) which uses a speaker "motor" inside to mimic working with a cab.

I bought the 8ohm Torpedo before watching this. I still would have bought it. It does what I want. My goto amp is my Blues Junior. My goto tone involves the master being at 7 and volume at 5. It hurts. I took my amp to my friend's much nicer studio and we recorded and edited some impulses. I took my amp back to my not so nice studio and tried out my IRs from my cab. The results were a big bowl of happy soup and some giggle crackers. My amp never sounded better. Knowing your speakers and your mics, makes a massive difference when presented with the opportunity to create impulse responses from the actual amp+cab you use. It also helps to have a friend that spent half of a years pay figuring all this shit out, so all I had to was bring my amp and buy a loadbox. In truth, I did my research and took advantage of access to a good room and mics. Combined with this affordable loadbox, it made for a perfect solution with much betteer than expected results. I play at the edge of break up, most of the time, so I don't push my gear like my metal-playing offspring. Not everyone is going to have the outcome I did. My son wanted to try it on his 100W boutique hi gain. I said no. This review was entertaining and informative. Very well done.

Subbed, informative and funny. Do you think this can allow me to buy an SV20h and see the police less often? No volume knob... that's a big let down but it seems a lot better than the similarly priced ones with volume control down to zero. Maybe add a master volume to the output of the captor? So I get the reactive load but fine control on volume? Maybe I should just stick with my DSL but that one also needs volume to sound nice so I think I want a loadbox either way and this solves a lot of problems. I can't record anything past 22 PM, that would solve that.
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 2 ай бұрын
Some electronics experts explained why there is no fluid volume control on less expensive loadboxes in the comments here - basically, as I understand it, a volume control (volume trim) for low power signal is 1-2 elements (potentiometer and sometimes a capacitor to compensate for eq changes), while trim volume Control for high power signals is a few orders if magnitude more complex. If you are worried about the attenuation level, captor x has two settings (-20 and -38) - maybe it's a better choice. As I get older and lazier, I start to think that maybe the onboard DSP is also a good thing - those things do NOT sound good without impulse response, and setting one up in DAW is one of those things that take only 5 minutes, but gradually start to piss you off when you do them the 50th time 😅

Nice and funny review (y) Just one note - isn't the impedance mismatching more of a problem with speakers than actual amps? Most amps have optional impedance or outputs (mine have 4, 8 and 16 ohms), so If you go with full attenuation and recording, that's not really a problem, right? Just switch impedance on the back of your amp to the ohms of the particular captor. I think the problem starts when you want to go with -20dB or no attenuation, because you have to match captor with your speaker too. So If I get it right, when I plug in 8 ohm captor, I'd have to set 8ohms on the back of my combo but since it has 16 ohms speaker in it, I'd have to connect external 8 ohms cabinet.

Really entertaining! I was thinking of getting the Captor X, can you advise please! I want to get a Marshall SV20 Head and just connect it to the Captor as a Load Box (not attenuator) and then either use the headphones or XLR out to a FRFR PA Speaker (Alto TS212). Would you say the Captor X would be better for that due to the IR loader (for the XLR output) or is it a waste of money and I should go with Captor for half price...Thanks!
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 3 жыл бұрын
Captor x will be better in this case, as first of all - captor does not have headphones output, and second of all - they did not give it the headphone output because they claim analog speaker sims sound too dry for headphones. You would need to keep a laptop running wall of sound around to make it sound nice, and that sounds like a bit too much hussle :)

Hi, great demo! Is the captor the same inside with the X (just without the extra features) or the X has improved sound?
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I did not take both of them apart, but the block diagrams are very similar. Most extra features are mostly digital - I think they are added without big modifications to the existing circuitry. Only the extra attenuation level makes a difference - it's actually adding a new signal path, but still - its more of an add-on than full-on modification. I'm an engineer - not in electronics/electrics, but we engineers are lazy and usually forced to cut the costs down. So it's safe to assume that if two things (cars, amps, buildings, captors) are similar, most likely they are mostly copy-pasted of each other ;)

I think the individual 8 and 16 is stupid. At least on the base captor here. If Weber can do it for $250 with a 4,8,16ohm, true bypass, treble compensation, full dial and has a eq for the load out…it seems the only real reason and I did…was get the captor on a sale for $200 to use with IRs. I already have an Iron Man Built into my amp. So no need for that at all…but still have to record late at night. Only benefit of the X is if you have a slow computer, or really want to use it live over a mic. That’s really it! If you can record fine at 128-256 with your computer, the captor software with 3rd party or any other vst is fine. You just won’t have direct monitoring. For me it’s pay $200 to use IRs, or pay $599 to use live, and direct monitor. $300 more for direct monitoring isn’t worth recording what will be guide tracks anyway. I’ll end up tracking over with a mic on a Saturday afternoon. So I can only really see the $300 more if…you don’t already have an attenuator, you play live a lot, don’t want to mic up and just don’t have a good recording computer to keep up with the buffer rates. 10 years ago I would of bought this…but these days you can buy a computer with 64gb ddr4 and Nvme SSD for $800-$1k. I bought a used I7 6 core Mac mini with 64gb ddr4 at $800. It’s insanely fast and can record lots of tracks at 128 buffer with vst, before even moving to 256. 256 is usually the highest latency I’d record any guitar at period. I think this should be priced more at the $400-$450 price range. A raspberry Pi or ARM computer to run this locally is cheap. The attenuator is limited. The price at $599 is widely crazy to me Vs buying a cheap IR loader pedal to put in front amy load box. From what I see the DA conversion isn’t that special, you have a mini computer and Dac stage running after. For the price of upgrade my computer, or might as well save up for a Boss Waza. Or charge one and pay your $600 and the other half off over the year. If your just trying to record at home silently, can do most stuff at 256 buffer or lower…get the base Black captor for cheaper. For $599 plus tax, id probably take advantage of a no APR for 2 years thigh store Sweetwater on a $1200 Boss Waza, pay $600 up top and then pay the small fee monthly till payed off. The price for the Captor X seems a bit steep, compared to what’s out there for cheaper or more.

Just to clarify for a luddite like myself, with your Hot Rod, on the first demo you are using the speaker on your amp so you had to put Captor in between your speaker out and speaker in, which is really awkward on the Hot Rod. For the second demo where you are using the speaker simulation, you are just using the speaker out on the Hot Rod correct? I'm just trying to make a distinction between how you use the Captor and the CAB M, which isn't a load box. Thanks,
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 3 жыл бұрын
It's actually sits between the speaker out and the speaker itself. Because it's a load box, you don't have to connect the speaker, but I kept it connected. I was recording all the tracks ( two mics, captor dry and captor with speaker sim) all the time for comparisons. CABM would connect to power amp out, and then to a PA system or a mixer - so the difference is that it skips the power amp section. Hope this helps :)

Nice informative video. I am on the fence between ( 3 ) Captor X or Suhr unit or Fryette Power Station PS-2. I just want to "Tame the Volume" on a 65 Princeton Reverb reissue. Any Input ?
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 3 жыл бұрын
It's quite complex - fryette has the best volume control, but it works a bit differently to standard attenuators - it brings down the signal to line-level, and than uses its built-in tube power amp to control the volume - so it may affect the sound a little bit. Also, it supports 4/8/1 ohms, while both captor and suhr are limited here. If volume control is the main thing you're after, I'd go with fryette - what I'm missing with captor when it comes to volume control is something like -10db (loud enough to have plenty of dynamics, silent enough not to upset the neighbors), and that should be achievable with fryette.

Hi! Thanks for the video. Do you have a good solution for me… I have a low watted Marshall (tubes) that I like and a pedalboard, but when I go out to play I really don’t want to take my cab with me. So is there anything I can plug my amp into so I can plug my Marshall "straight in to" the MIX/PA?

I know the captor 8 can only hold one cab sim in it, but can you load up different cabs into there captor 8 or is it just a built in cab sim? (I might have the words/tech talk wrong just correct me instead of being mean plz lol)

You can't load any can sims into captor 8 - it has an analogue built in cab sim, and it's not very good - I don't use it at all, i just add cab simulation in Cubase/Ableton.

I have a Peavey 6505+ 112 , 60W combo that I would like to play at lower volume . Should I go for this ? Other option is Jhs black amp box.
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 2 жыл бұрын
Those are very different. JHS will effectively simply lower your power amp input volume (and actually, you can use any effect with volume control instead of it), while captor will reduce the power amp volume. The difference is that with captor, unlinke with JHS, you can get overdrive from your power amp, which - as some people say, is the sweetest :) The minus is that Captor only has -20db level, but actually it's ok for most purposes :)

Ok, impedance wise.... Say I have a Bogner with 4, 8, 16ohm outputs. Can I run this with a 16ohm Captor X and go via the Captor X with attenuation? Or not. Not sure if its better to just get the the Captor Black 16ohm! Thanks
@lobster-music
@lobster-music Жыл бұрын
You absolutely can get a 16 ohm captor x - when I was recording this there was only one version of captor x, now you can get it in the proper impedance version. If you cannot decide between captor and captor x, i think the main question is "am i going to play via headphones?" - if yes, the built in IRs beat in the captor x beat the captor. If you plan to play it via the amp using attentuation, you don't need IR at all. Also, if you plan to use it mainly for recording, you don't need captor x - it's actually better to capture dry sound and apply IRs via the plugin. Hope this helps :)

@@lobster-music amazing info my guy! Thanks so much for taking the time. One last question is, for recording on both devices, do they act as their own audio interface to computer? @@Ibanezguy2007 I'm pretty sure the standard captor does not have an audio interface built in - it's a fully analogue device. As for captor x, i think the USB interface is only for remote control, so you will still need an audio interface - i can recommend Scarlett from focusrite ;)

Hi mr lobster-music! How can I use the captor x with my fender 59 reissue bassman combo 4x10? Those 4 speakers means 2 ohms that s why I think I have a problem Thanks
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 2 жыл бұрын
The best possible answer is 'use the 4 ohm version' - using a higher impedance loadbox is kinda ok, but it's best to keep the mismatch to minimum anyway. From what I've read on the interwebs bassman 59 ltd has one step mismatch tolerance, and most probably it uses the same or very similar circuit to reissue.

Thanks for the review. I have a VOX AC15C1 (combo) and I want to record at home. If I connect the torpedo captor with AC15 (Guitar - pedalboard - VOX AC15 - Torpedo - Audio interface - Mac). Can I still get the VOX tone? As if I'm using the 'external SP' port, it will disconnect the internal speaker of AC15.
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 3 жыл бұрын
Youl get pretty close. You'll need to find a fitting impulse response (cabinet simulator) to account for the tone of your speaker and cabinet (I know it's a combo amp, but that just means that amp is the cabinet). I would say that you can get pretty close to the tone of a miced up amp. I recently did a solo recording with captor (check the most recent vid on my channel)- i sprinkled some good reverb (plugins), echo and compression on it and im quite pleased with the results - i would say it's the closest i was ever able to get to the tone of my amp at home. I miced it up with a sm57, but i did not use it in the mix - captor sounded basically the same. But good reverb plugins and some stereo echo will go a long way.
@michaelhe755
@michaelhe755 3 жыл бұрын
@@lobster-music Thanks for replying. I'm wondering why you still need a Shure sm57 mic if you're using captor in your most recent video? The tone is good, but I thought using the 2 notes captor is for line-in recording, so you don't need a mic. And that's the goal - silently recording at home (at least it's my goal :D) By the way per my previous question, I thought the internal speaker of VOX has its own tone, so I want to keep that. Also, you said a cabinet simulator, is it a software? (sorry I'm new to this field). Thanks.

yes, but those are not exactly the same: they limit the preamp volume, while attenuators limit the power amp output volume. So while it may help with getting the right volume, it will nmot get the same tone as a more fluent attenuator.

Your comments about volume control are ill-informed. Most attenuators don't have the kind of volume control you are talking about. This includes the UAD Ox Box, despite the fact that you state it does have that kind of volume control. For any device to have the volume control you are describing would require some kind of amplifier built into it. The Boss Waza TAE uses a Class AB amplifier to do this. The Fryette Power Station also includes an amplifier. Those designs act as a load box taking the signal from your amplifier down to zero and then use their built in amplifiers to amplify that sound again. Attenuators like the Captors or the Ox Box use discrete levels of attenuation because each notch on the selector switch is incorporating a different attenuation circuit.

Nice catch, thanks - i only had one semester of electrical engineering, and i wasn't very good at it, so yeah, i kind of suck :) but you're right, building in a massive potentiometer is not an option, ithas to be an amp. Still, ox has way more levels (hence, way more circuits) than captor...
