Remember; when Portnoy went to see Dream Theater, and hung out with his old friend Mangini, Portnoy said that as the Drummer in Dream Theater, Mangini has the Worst job in the world. "If he plays what I played, then they say he is too robotic! If he puts his own fills in, they say 'Why did he do that, that's not on the album'! He can't win either way. Worst job in the world!" 🤘🏻

The playing here by this is just astonishing. Amazing and amazing. Yet and though, the left handed double stroke ruff part I don't like though. So e how this guy matches the single stroke fill ins with just his left and but the ruff stroke part I think ought have been played two handed. The single handed double doesn't match the recording on original enough in my opinion. I think the original was an eginewred gated take but this particular part of this cover sounds weaker than the original despite being rhythmically accurate

Mike Portnoy is infinitely better than Mangini for the fact he can write. Mangini is top of the technical drummer food chain wise... But at the end of the day he spent 13 years learning from parts that JP already programmed. Hence why he was fired via phone call. Portnoy gets down and dirty with writing, lyrics, singing, production.

@austinsatterfield6792 It's not Ignorant when I've listened to Distance Over Time. I like the album, I like Mangini's parts. But his dynamic playing is not even close to Portnoy. As a drummer myself, no I'm not ignorant. If you want to show me a video with Mangini playing something with good dynamics, then go ahead. And maybe I'll change my opinion. But if ur gonna sit there and tell me he's BETTER than Portnoy? You sir are ignorant :) looking forward to your reply.

Yea I'm sorry but Mangini was a bit of a downgrade. He's talented, intelligent and technical, but Portnoy has that SAUCE that is glaringly absent in Mangini's playing. Gotta have a drummer that actually makes love to his kit, otherwise it may as well be programmed drums. I'm a bassist, I can't stand a drummer that's all grid, but no pocket.

@@Ujick46 some replacement members can win fans over, some can't. Some will get some fans, but not all. Mangini has fans, just not me. I don't think he sucks, he can obviously play if he was chosen for DT, I just prefer listening to Portnoy's playing. He sounds like a person hitting drums with a stick.
