Imo, the scariest thing for me in horror is when the character does everything right, they do exactly what you would’ve done, they’re smart, and yet bad things still happen to them. There’s no beating it, you can’t outsmart them, it just happens to you and there’s nothing you can do about it.

I used to be a moderator on the Creepypasta Wiki back before and at the peak of its popularity. At one point we stopped being an archive of popular 4chan stories and email chains and became the central hub for most internet horror stories and I think that got to our heads. We all had really strong ideas as to what constitutes as a Good Story and we made it rule that if your story wasnt up to those standards it would be deleted. This is a decision that, many many years later, I deeply regret participating in and enforcing because the site was a really good starting ground for young writers wanting to express themselves and we kicked them out unless it was up to SlimeBeast standards. If nothing else, even if we had removed stuff I think we shouldve actively maintained an archive beyond sending the especially bad stuff over to the Trollpasta Wiki because I'm sure there are many people to this day who would love to read their old material that they simply no longer can. No idea how relevant any of this is to the video as I'm only a few minutes in, but I just needed to vent this out. If you are someone who has the ability to destroy the work of others, I'd urge you to please not. Even if it's a poorly written horror story, it was SOMEONE'S poorly written horror story and that's something that needs to be appreciated on premise alone.

Man this comment really makes all my hours spent pointing and laughing at poorly written creepypastas prior to deletion/being sent to the trollpasta wiki into perspective. Kinda easy to forget behind all the edgy violence, Jeff the Killer clones and derivative lost episode stories there's actual people writing, more than likely usually young and inexperienced but usually still trying none the less.

Yeah, I remember when I was 12 or 13 reading about Pokémon Creepypastas on the website but then a few years later when Creepypastas had a BOOM I was shocked that the Wiki removed Videogame Creepypastas. I tried finding some of them like the Ilex Forest Witch and the one about the Grass Gym INSIDE Eterna Forest but I still can't find them. It's really nostalgic and I just wanna re-read them for funsies.

I think the ambiguity is the most terrifying part of creepypastas. The whole point of creepypastas is that stories are so mysterious that you can't tell if it's real or not, making you feel uncomfortable. Lost episode creepypastas of kids cartoons and video games are basically the early examples of "analogue horror" and ARGs.
@starmaker75

however the problem is that most creepypasta were basically a middle school or high schooler first story and it show with alot of them
@nat9504

Yeah, ambiguity is the meat and potatoes of a good creepypasta. The story Psychosis is a great example of that (until the very end where it chucks all ambiguity out the window), the entire story you're not sure what to believe/whether the MC is a reliable narrator.
@anteaterking6728
@anteaterking6728 2 жыл бұрын
The entire reason that horror works as a concept is that we naturally fear the unknown. It's why the whole idea is to hide the monster / killer / whatever in mystery and shadows, making the viewer ponder what it could possibly be, because often our own imagination scares us more than whatever big cgi monster is on screen. It's why alot of creepypasta stories get "ruined" because people expand the lore of the monsters and take away all of the mystery as to who they are and what they want.
@utes5532
@utes5532 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of creepypastas make the fatal mistake of revealing everything at the end. I've gotten angry at so many creepypastas that have had my interest and tension only for them to infodump why and how everything happened and how the monster works and the monster's backstory etc. etc. A lot of writers just don't understand the value of mystery in horror and how revealing a mystery at the end can retroactively ruin the horror.

Wow, I can’t believe Gus and Henry are dead. Their deaths are so sad, it almost feels like this is some kind of creepypasta video… #WeAreNotAlive I have arachnophobia, and I had a dream as a kid where I was in my grandparents’ old house. There was like two spiders that appeared on the iPad I was using, and I tried to turn it off. But it activated this psychedelic moment where they came out but were for some reason coloured like a children’s colouring book. And like they pinned me and just… stared at me while a red and white background pulsed. To this day they are my most terrifying nightmare demons. Also the ghost that tried to rip my dick off because I was watching minecraft videos on an iPad while in Minecraft irl for some reason. That was less terrifying but it was painful as hell.

Oh, weird dreams eh? Buckle up, I got a few of these. I simply "woke up" on the Living room's couch. Crabs. Everyone in my house turned into crabs and when I question my Mother Crab, she asked "What's wrong, Marco?". I ran to the corridor, trying to get to my bedroom but the door was locked. I heard a weird "clickity clickity" all around me ; the hallway was orange and dark, thousands of crabs everywhere. My doorknob? Crab. The ground I was on? Crabs. Then I slowly look up. A gigantic crab. And it falls on my face. I wake up. I was scared. I was 6 years old. Funnily enough, my mother bought crabs to eat because she loves eating them. And to add on, I'm both arachnophobic and allergic to crustaceans.

To add to the bit about horror "just stopping", one of Lovecraft's best work was The Color Out of Space. Thing happens, its good at first, suddenly gets bad, get worse, everyone melts, then the locals are just left to deal with whats left. The idea of what happens AFTER a fucked up thing can be scary in and of itself and its usually not greatly touched upon. Its why Nightmare on Elm Street 3 is one of the best in the series.

At some point in the past, there was this nightmare where I saw a squiggly drawing of a vampire on a wall near my door, being made up of different colored crayons. Except for some reason, I wasn't able to look away from it; closing my eyes caused something the force them open, and the vampire drawing got increasingly more detailed & nightmarish, to the point where the area around it started flashing random colors. EDIT: There's also this...fluid Christmas "dream" I had about Santa Claus. I briefly saw him riding in the sky with his sleigh and reindeer, with the moon behind him. But it was so fluid that it came off as uncanny. And I put dream in quotation marks because I still don't know if that was real or not. #WeAreNotAlive

@TheShredworthy

That detail about the sound of the water in the pipes is actually pretty unique, and is a great balance of odd and creepy. I often can't freakin' stand most people's creepypasta elements, as the amateurish qualities often seem like they can't wait but just reveal almost everything about anything that might have been interesting. Often, they will just answer overly specific questions no one had asked, as an excuse to just "tell" you their creepy elements. They, are often, to be fair, beginners and/or younger, so a lack of experience is almost always in a hurry to reveal their own shortcomings.

The earliest nightmare monster that stuck with me: I was in a (makeshift?) hospital, with the curtains around my bed open. The harsh hospital lights were on, but everyone else was asleep, so I think it was night. Stalking through the rows of beds, opening the curtains, was this person(?) with mechanical spider legs (I think based on the dwemer from Morrowind), an animal face, and scalpels for fingers, and I somehow *knew* that it was named "oodle-oodle". It was slicing into people's chests, for some reason. It had a squirrel with a human head, that I knew was named "mother's star" alongside it, commanding it, crawling on the tracks that the curtains were hung from. I think Mother's Star also had the ability to make people fall asleep and maybe do other things if you looked into its eyes? I panicked and got up and started running, and oodle-oodle was chasing me, being yelled at by Mother's Star to make me do something. I woke up when it caught me #WeAreNotAlive

There Existed An Addiction To Blood is the bloodiest album to ever blood. The cover is basically a bunch of nails on a black background and those are prime ways to cause blood to come out of a person. The soundscapes for the songs will probably cause you have blood coming from the ears cause at times the album gets very harsh. But all in all the album is just bloody and scary fun that's basically based on horror films, which have lots of blood in them.

I know this vid is pretty old by now, but I want to mention that, one of the best examples of a mental imbalance used in a creepypasta imo is Tales from the Gas Station. The main character has a real life (though rare) condition that doesn't allow him to sleep and he has to cope with not always being sure whether what he's seeing is real or a result of his illness. It's really well done and one of my personal favorites.

Oh I've been waiting to share this one! This nightmare has haunted me for years even though it sounds, absolutely ridiculous My family was going to the local science museum which was opening a new exhibit. On the way there we saw this rainbow bridge so we started riding up the rainbow until we got to a secret cloud museum above the regular one. We looked around but then! The wizard cloud man was there! He was angry we were there despite him wanting the rainbow to take us there. So he kidnapped my sister (she was a baby when I had this dream) and put a pink hat on her head. Then he hid her under a cloud and put three other pink hats in a row and we had to guess which one my sister was under, otherwise she'd fall to the ground. We guessed but unfortunately it was wrong, so the whole family started falling down in the van. Somehow the landing was safe and everyone was fine. And we vowed to never go to a cloud museum ever again :) #wearenotalive

Man i really hated the "im bleeding out but im gonna type out this very detailed story in case someone finds it" because it could have been good. Like, someones trying to tell you about this horrific thing, but they cant afford to go into detail, so they only focus on the important details and let your imagination fill in the blanks. Also, creepypasta characters are, imo, always better when they are this being whos origin is unkown. Trying to give a character like slenderman or jeff the killer or zalgo, or any other teenage emo girl's wet dream, a backstory kinda ruins the sense of dread that comes from not knowing where a threat comes from. which doesnt allow you to fully understand it, which doesnt let you fight or confront it. I think the scariest creepypasta I've ever read wasn't fatal- I forget what it was called, but the basic gist is that someone mixed their meds wrong and it caused their perception of time to slow so drastically that they were trapped in their own mind for millenia, stuck in place, for what felt like forever and then they just- like- went back to normal time processing after that
@blackholeguy1529
@blackholeguy1529 10 ай бұрын
i am pretty sure i listened to like a video animation based on this type of thing some guy was testing drugs which slowed their perception of time to like 10x slower but later, they took some drugs to try and go to sleep, but they didn't kick in guess waht? later, when he was trying to go back down to the train to get back to the test place to ask for an antidote, but that sleepy drug from earlier reacts HORRIBLY with the slow stuff, making their perception go from 10x slower to like 10,000x slower, so they were basically suffering now because they just rolled their ankle, and it just hurts for like what seems to be millenias due to the time perception-sleepy drug combo also working on pain

On the subject of weird nightmares and nightmare demons (sleep paralysis demons in this case), I think the one that filled me with the most horror came in the weirdest way. The only part I remember is standing outside in a trailer park with someone (I can't remember who but I remember a sense of familiarity) and then put of nowhere I hear this high pitched, shrill, pulsing sound. I felt an immediate sense of dread and panic and threw myself under the nearest car in a fetal position, the sound still pulsing. The person I was with didn't react though, they didn't even ask me why I was so scared. I had the concept behind bats flood my mind, I had no reason to believe whatever made the noise was a bat but I somehow knew it had a relation to them. Then I woke up, face down and paralyzed. I still heard the sound. That was the only experience with sleep paralysis I've ever had and it still freaks me out when I think on it. I'm open to names for my sleep paralysis demon, my current name is bat-thing #WeAreNotAlive

One nightmare I distinctly remember was one where I wound up on an abandoned spaceship that was torn apart (think the GFS Valhalla from Metroid Prime 3 - look it up if you don't know). It was pretty standard gloomy fare until I made it to the outside of the ship. The ship was stuck floating in space distinctly surrounded by a sea of golden clouds. If you looked down though it's just an infinite black pit of nothing. What really got me was seeing the clouds part to see this humongous eldritch Lovecraftian monster come into frame, like it easily eclipses the ship in size. To this day I still don't have a good description of what it was supposed to look like, but it scared me enough to wake up immediately. As a person that routinely catalogues my dreams, I felt this was interesting enough to put into my games as-is without modifying anything about it. #wearenotalive

#WeAreNotAlive When I was 8 I had a nightmare that spiderman from the 90's animated series had died and there were a bunch of people walking all over his grave and casually talking about how he died. He came back to life as a giant, buff, green skinned zombie with a praying mantis head, and whenever he was attacking someone his head would claymation unfold unto a laughing skull with bulging eyes hanging out of the sockets by their nerves. Even as an 8 year old I thought it sounded stupid when I woke up but in my dream it scared the shit out of me

My first nightmare demon ever that I can remember was from when I was around 2-3 years old, I was so young and it was so long ago that I can't remember if it was a nightmare, a really vivid intrusive thought, or sleep paralysis, I'm pretty sure I was in a sort of in an inbetween state between awake and asleep when I had this dream thing. The dream thing starts with me in my bed, just casually going to sleep when the door opens, I thought it was my mom at first, but it was actually the "e" logo for Internet Explorer; the bottom part of the "e" was its jaw and the hole in the middle was it's eye. It came into the room, tore me to pieces and ate some of me, but left some pieces of my body under the covers and left the room. At this point I was just a ghost observing from the corner of the room and watched as my mom came in to check on me, she thought I was asleep under the covers and I just had to sit there and watch as she pulled back the blankets to see nothing more than a pile of meat, I had no idea what organs were at that age and just assumed that people were just made of solid meat and bones. To this day, that dream makes me shutter, I don't think I've ever had a dream that morbid since, and at age 3? I couldn't even conceptualize the idea of being torn to pieces at the time, my brain had to come up with theories of what's inside the human body as it was happening. I felt emotions during that dream that I had never felt once up until that point, I think that dream must've been the first time I developed a theory of mind, the realization of mortality, the realization that my mother is limited in her ability to protect me, and also empathy towards my mother and the grief she would've been feeling in that moment. That dream about the Internet Explorer nightmare demon changed me.

I've had this weird recurring nightmare since I was a kid it's not as crazy as Gus's nightmare demons but it is kinda creepy. So in the dream I'm always in like a textbook Indiana Jones rainforest and it's always the dead night, most of the time I'm sitting either inside (usually the backseat) or on the hood of some vintage car that's covered in moss and vines. The car changes every time I have the dream but the one thing that stays the same is that it's always a bright pastel yellow. Now the creepy part comes from this clown that never speaks but just kind of stares me down for the entirety of the dream. The clown looks like any other creepy circus clown with red hair and a striped outfit but it has bright yellow snake eyes. It moves to only two places every time I have the dream, in the front seat passenger side of the car or an arms length away from me. I don't really have a fear of clowns, I think they're pretty creepy given the right context, but regardless this dream always has me waking up feeling extremely antsy and unsettled #WeAreNotAlive

One of the first nightmare monsters I remember was a bunch of early Looney toons animated weasels that would chase me around a completely normal, real life world and would just repeat the word 'chicken' over and over again while running at me on two legs. And for some reason it was like from a 3rd person view where I'd just see myself running in and out of view, then reappear running in a different area. I was also really small and I remember a part where my dad was there shooting at the weasels from behind a car.

One utterly terrifying nightmare I had was that a praying mantis had crawled into my bed, and I accidentally rolled onto it in my sleep and killed it. I legitimately got up, searched my bed for it (it didn't actually exist), and went to go cry in the bathroom. Eventually I felt so tired and done, I just went back to bed, fully accepting there was a massive dead insect somewhere in there. I'm not actually afraid of praying mantises, and I think it was an actual fever dream. As in, I was horribly ill that day and compared to my other symptoms, hallucinating insects would be mild.

I've had a weird, recurring nightmare since I was a kid. For a quick bit of background, I'm terrified of the ocean-- so this nightmare already starts out with something terrifying to me. I'm swimming in the ocean. It's not a typical ocean. It's got these huge, buoyant (not in the regular lily pad sort of way, but more in the "life raft" kind of way?) lily pads floating in the middle of it and no shoreline anywhere in sight. At first, I'm just swimming along peacefully. Then, I start to feel my limbs weigh down. My eyes droop with exhaustion. The sun goes from high in the sky above me to falling over the horizon and suddenly I'm aware that I've been swimming for hours without resting. I swim over to a lily pad and I climb on top of it, and then, every single time, I make the mistake of looking over the side of the lily pad and into the clear water. I see the sand at the bottom of the ocean start to move-- the coral begins to heave; suddenly I'm left extremely aware that there aren't any fish and there is no reason for the sand to be stirring up the way it is, or for the coral to be shuddering. Huge, spire-like teeth emerge from the sand and begin jutting up towards the water. They break the surface and tower above me. The lily pad was like a bear-trap trigger (you know, the little circular part in the middle) and I was laying right on top of it-- only, instead of working like a bear trap and skewering me, it's instead acting like an alert to something big and monstrous living in the ocean that prey has wandered in. I try to jump off of the lily pad to swim away, but my legs are glued to it. The creature's mouth closes and I am plunged into absolute darkness, and then it begins to lower deeper into the water-- which pours over my face from the gaps in it's teeth above. I always wake up before anything else can happen, but the last thing I usually experience is my head going under the water with my legs still glued to the lily pad. I feel breathless and my arms thrash, my legs WOULD but they can't, and I'm already exhausted at that point of my dream. So, I guess my nightmare demon would be whatever the fuck is lurking in that ocean, acting like a big venus flytrap. Not my worst recurring nightmare, but definitely one of the more memorable ones! #WeAreNotAlive

That'd be a viable lifeform on a world with air-breathing aquatic animals that like to rest up or hide on land from marine predators - like seals (or a crocodilian equivalent) - or large numbers of migratory birds. Thinking about it, that's also this world - maybe you're getting psychic impressions from stranded fishermen out in the South China Sea, not nightmares.

Here's my bizarre nightmare story: When I was a kid I had an animated film I didn't really like called "The Mystery of the Third Planet" (I think it's Russian?). At one point I dreamt that I was given the sequel "The Mystery of the Third Planet 2", and started watching it, but the film was about me, getting too many Christmas presents and not having time to open them before going to bed. At night the presents joined together and became a hideous monster made of unopened comical Christmas presents. I then stopped the film to go have a poo, which for some reason I did with the door open. As I was sat on the toilet, the present monster from the film started coming down the stairs the toilet door faces, at which point I woke up from sheer terror. It's been like two decades since I've had that dream and I still have the image of that monster going down the stairs every time I use that toilet - it makes me feel like #WeAreNotAlive.

This nightmare I had when I was around 4 or 5 years old. The nightmare creature was based on a fox puppet from a UK children's show. The nightmare started was me waking up from my bed. I open the door to the hallway, the hallway was starting to slowly break apart and just having black voids everywhere like holes and such? The downstairs had the light on and everything and so far nothing bothered me as much. Just went downstairs into the living room as I normally do to watch tv. The light was on pretty dimly and I sat on the floor but tv comes on and there he is, but instead of the orange fur it was pure black instead, the fur was all messy, his eyes where dark and wide and probably hollow too, but the worst of all was his twisted jagged smile and seem to be kinda tall and slender like, he wasn't no longer a puppet but a creature that look like him in a way. He doesn't say anything, but opens his mouth up wide, like gapping wide mouth hearing some weird inhaleing noises as his mouth open wide, and it starts pulling me into the tv and his mouth become a black hole of sorts. I started crying and screaming trying to get onto the sofa as a safe spot. Then these other small, dark, demon like creatures come out, having red, yellow and green outlines, laughing at me and try to drag me in more into the tv. I keep crying and screaming something like no, no stop it, stop it and before I was eaten by the fox like creature I quickly wake up and was back in my bed paralysed by the nightmare that happen to me. And that was my first ever encounter with a sleep paralysis demon. Not to mention the house I used to live in might of been haunted, as it was a super old house. So I normally had a lot of nightmares around that time, being chased by something or being trapped or falling from a high place and so on. Thankfully now I don't have them as much as I used to from all those years ago. #WeAreNotAlive

My earliest nightmare monster is this weird blood monster thing that was chasing me, and it could travel through display screens, and if it headbutted you, you'd turn into one. And the most vivid part of that dream was just a guy sitting at his computer, when its head came out of the screen and headbutted him. Another weird dream I had was where the local burger king sign was actually a portal to a hub of sorts, where you could access other dimensions, or something. There were three portals inside, labeled Hats, Santa, and Trains. Hats just takes you back to Earth. Santa takes you to a barren tundra inhabited solely by giant spiders. Trains takes you to a post apocalyptic earth, where the last shreds of humanity are all in a fake old west town encased by a mall

When I was a very young child (talking 4-5 years old), I had a recurring nightmare demon who took the form of a small slime blob with eyes that solely existed under a living room couch that was distinctly not my living room. It also only happened at night, with the moon out and the room in low light. Each time I would try to catch a glimpse of it under the sofa, and each time it would lash out, grab me by the legs, and drag me under the couch as I screamed bloody murder. At that point I would promptly wake up and go back to bed for the night. I distinctly remember trying to talk to it in one run of the nightmare to understand why it was doing this to me, to which it wordlessly dragged me under anyways. Some day I just stopped having the nightmare, but it sticks with me still. On a completely different note when I was a bit older, I was being chased by Max from Sam and Max, but a vampire. Both were equally terrifying. #WeAreNotAlive

For the #WeAreNotAlive thing, my most recent nightmare and also the most memorable is where I get house sitting duty and it turns to a weird mishmash of Disney, Lord of the Rings, The videogame Smite, The Simpsons and videogames in general. After my parents leave and leave me to look after the house, things freeze like in the film Frozen and people from Disney films ask for my help to put a stop to it. After I get the key that will stop the freezing, Sauron is there and constructs the castle that's found in Mordor. After which begins the videogame elements. After beating what seems to be the end level, I start to climb up a death star like shaft that leads to the person who is behind of all this. The person in question being Mister Burns. For some reason Homer Simpson is also there and gets scared. By running towards me, we both fall down the shaft. At the bottom, I land on steady ground, but Homer falls on a puddle of radioactive waste, turning into a blob monster, planning to eat me. After that I woke up.

However I remember one dream where I’m in my house at night, I walked from my kitchen to my bedroom and when I opened my door on top of my bed was this large pirate looking ship covered in sludge and garbage. I remember being able to walk around it too. Then all of a sudden what looked like arms or tentacles coming out of the pirate ship, grabbed me, hoisted me up and pulled me into the ship. To this day I’m not sure what my dream means or why I even started to dream about some monster pirate ship that’s alive but I guess it feels fitting to share about this experience. #wearenotalive

On the Weird horror-esque monsters that are born from our dreams as children, in the same sense, rather recently, about 2 or so nights ago I've had one of those dreams: In that dream, it had begun with a narrator that had said something along the lines, "True Horror is when your mind recognizes the subtle inaccuracies of a monster pretending to be Man," which was probably from some sort of long horror video I was watching when I fell asleep, From that narration, I was then with an old childhood friend from late elementary school, and we where hanging out at my house that was reminiscent of my current home but in the middle of a bald spot within a forest. I had ran upstairs to my bedroom to grab nerf guns for him and I to play with, and while I was digging through the toy chest for the guns, He had prompted me a question, which I can't remember the purpose of or what was spoken exactly, however when I had stopped to look at him, I realized that he was leaning against the window seal from the outside. The problem with that, I was on the second story of the house, at this point I had realized his face was, inaccurate as if it was slightly dis-proportioned, kinda like there was gravity pulling on the leftmost side of his face, One cheek was larger then the other, but not in a natural rounded form of an odd cheek that can come naturally, but more like the skin, flesh and fat was loose from from the bone, it had no shape or structure. I tried to kill him, I then woke up.

I have plenty of nightmare creatures. The ones I can recall from my childhood are as follows. I recall one that was basically a Role of magnet tape with Banjo Kazooie googly eyes that somehow ended up swallowing me like an anaconda. There was another one called the ghost, where I dreamt that I got stuck in a graveyard and no matter how far I ran I would always wind up in that same cemetery. I never actually got a good look at it, but it was able to catch me, where it used its powers to hold me in the air Darth Vader style. There is the sand witch, which only appeared at the end of the dream after being foreshadowed like crazy, and ended up grabbing my leg from beneath the sand with only it's sand like arm being visible. The most recent nightmare creatures I have dreamt up with are the facelings, which are basically changelings but they need to skin your face and wear it to actually turn into you. These creatures can best be described as hairless antennaeless Teletubbies that had neon yellow rubbery skin and sun yellow eyes that were surround with a crimson hue, as well as amber like teeth. Somehow the only one that appeared in my dream ended up being killed when I managed to ambush it, cutting off its head. They also have a laugh like a Stock Halloween skeleton decoration. #WeAreNotAlive

Oh boy I have a whole list of whacky dreams and nightmares I could pick up in this comment but I’ll go with this short and goofy one I had last month. So I was closing up this gate in my backyard and turning off these lights so a bunch of demons wouldn’t steal my livestock. Then the dream cut to this religious guy at a mall named “Sexy Henry The Preacher” and 3 identical women in red dresses came up to him and proposed or asked for favors but he’s very devout Christian so he said “No thank you, I’m hunting demons” as he proceeds to load a shotgun and go into my backyard to hunt 3 little red demons in my backyard. I suppose those demons are going to be #WeAreNotAlive pretty soon.
