they also forget that IQ tests, as far as I am aware from personal experience, are only used by actual medical professionals to test for intellectual disabilities, not as an indicator of positive intelligence. There is a correlation between IQ and success, and it certainly CAN indicate intelligence, but the correlation is very vague, and a great number of results are based off of how good a test taker the person is.

My IQ was tested when I was evaluated for ADHD. It came with a note on the report that the calculation wasn't actually accurate because it only works if you have a similar score in every area they test. So if some things come easily to you and others super don't, which is EXTREMELY COMMON, the IQ test breaks.
@beek.4860

After I got tested for ADHD (take a wild guess as to the results based on the fact that I'm replying to a year-old comment with a vaguely related anecdote), the IQ test portion in my file was right next to the score of an IQ test I took at the age of, like, five. The score from when I was five years old was higher. I know full well that the testing methods for children and adults are different so the scores aren't comparable, but I choose to believe that I simply got stupider because it's so funny. I don't think anything has ever made me laugh as hard as looking at those test results.

I feel mildly called out by this video. I've been trying my whole life to avoid the label of "smart", because hearing it over and over from the adults around me as a kid was, let's say... not helpful. When you're singled out like that, even if it's because of a trait that people praise you for, it's alienating. It's not good for a child's development to be treated so differently from their peers. Of course, while it's a little bit uncomfortable to hear some strangers on the internet speaking in a bit of a dismissive tone about an experience I had at such a young age, one thing was absolutely 100% spot-on. I was living with a condition that I never got diagnosed for. The real problem isn't that I was Blessed With Suck, it's the way that mental illness is handled by our society. Because I happen to be wired a certain way, I did very well on tests, which meant that I must be "gifted." So, when I struggled in other areas, I wasn't seen as a kid who needed help, I was seen as a gifted kid who just wasn't living up to my potential, who just needed to apply myself, who just needed more challenging material so I wouldn't be bored. I'm autistic, and it took me a very, VERY long time to come to terms with that, so I have some sympathy for awkward teens posting dumb bullshit on a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fansite. But ultimately, being neurodivergent doesn't mean you're blessed with suck, it's just that the way that some people are going to treat you sucks. Also, those tropers were probably just assholes.

i mean i felt a bit called out too. bc "gifted kid burnout" is a specific thing where kids are praised not for their dedication, work ethic, or perserverance, but their ability to quickly & effortlessly understand things. so as soon as we encounter something challenging we feel like failures because we were specifically rewarded for *not feeling challenged*

Yeah i absolutely feel the same way, and I do genuinely feel it appropriate calling myself pretty smart, because sometimes I make connections, notice things, or learn things in ways that would be rude or inappropriate of me to expect others to do. Like, a major part of my childhood development was literally learning that other people struggling to understand math was not them being lazy, stupid, etc, it was normal to have trouble learning sometimes, even if I didn’t know what it felt like. At the same time, I could’ve wound up like Neil Dgrasse Tyson, or these high IQ Rick and Morty fans, so I’m glad that there is some kind of pushback against acting like it’s normal to feel better than others just for learning faster or not making mistakes or whatever. Assholes are assholes no matter what Edit: okay those comments at the very end about gifted kid “burnout” were outright spiteful, what the heck. You’re telling me you understand that people are being systemically underdiagnosed, instead being lauded as “smart” for conforming to the expectations of that system, come out of the public school system struggling to function, and you wanna describe that as an issue of not developing a “real personality”? I get that anyone obsessed with making life a competition that they’re winning is an asshole, but gifted kid “burnout” is an issue of systemic ableism, and a lot of people just don’t understand why they’re suddenly going from “most likely to succeed” in the yearbook to dropping out of college or changing jobs once a year or more. If this was my first impression of these people, I’d be very distressed by that section at the end. Yikes

Ugh, as someone who was a "gifted kid" that was "smarter" (by the standards of the education system and my parents) than everyone else at a young age, the attitude of these "I'm so blessed with suck from being so smart" really confuses and disgusts me. They seem to have bought into their own hype and the hype of whatever authority figures did them dirty when they were little by telling them to have such inflated images of themselves. If they were actually "blessed" with all the smarts they claim, they'd realize that they don't have friends because they're lacking in some critical social skills, not because their over 9000 IQ is intimidating their peers or whatever. At least I'm self aware enough to realize that stuff like "making friends" is its own form of intelligence that I'm kind of missing, and that it's more important in the grand scheme of things than being good at gaming the academic system. I supposed that's my Blessed With Suck: being smart enough to realize that doing well on tests didn't mean I was actually smart. And then having no other options as a kid/teenager for things to base my self esteem on because to everyone around me and especially my parents, doing well on tests was basically the most important thing ever.

It feels like i have a mildly entertaining superpower. But at the same time, its hard to find out where the average person is on a scale from "has aphantasia" to "has hyperphantasia". Ive only talked about my minds eye with my friend who has aphantasia and i worry that if i describe it to someone else, it'll be like, "most people can do that, dipshit, lol." Years after the damage treatment healed the nerve my resting pain is 1-2, but I still have the trait of ignoring mild to moderate pain. I can now endure pain at levels that would have made me unconscious in the past. Great when I've had to haul someone out danger, but I generally don't know I am in pain, but I still feel it. Blessed with suck: I have the weird superpower of no one EVER seeming to notice when I pick my nose. I like picking my nose and I do it a lot. It's satisfying. But for some reason whenever I try to do it around people I know no one mentions it. And it's not that I surround myself with people that don't care about that kind of thing or try to hide it. They definitely would be disgusted. It first started few years ago when a kid in school said something about me always picking my nose, I just said "No, I don't." and he went completely silent like nothing ever happened. The last time I got called out for it was about a year ago when someone asked me if I just picked my nose, to which I replied: "No, I didn't". Once again the person responded with silence, they didn't even say something like "oh, ok" Or anything like that. But a side effect of this power I guess is that, for SOME fuckin reason, most of the time I SCRATCH my nose (not even on the inside mostly), which doesn't happen as often, someone is quick to call out that I shouldn't pick my nose or ask if I just did it. Pretty freaky. Oh and the kicker? He's the guy in American football that specializes in kicking the football into the pylons from long distances. Notable kickers include Tom Dempsey, who had a special deformed kicking foot with which he held the longest football kick with until Matt Prater, the current record holder dethroned him.

The suck with which I'm blessed is my Canadian radar (Canadar). I've been obsessed with Canadian TV and movies for years, and I'm good at picking out Canadian actors either because of sheer knowledge of the limited Canadian talent pool (kidding) or accents. I'm also generally good at guessing which part of Canada the person is from based on their accent. (Honestly, I'm just kind of good at recognizing accents.) It's a cool skill in my opinion, but not useful in any important way. Also, I'm in the U.S. and people constantly make fun of Canada or don't care, so no one but my husband is impressed by my Canadar.

I am like technically and/or hypothetically smart, I always relatively easily had straight A's, other examples I can't think of right now, etc, but more potently I am so very dumb. I am forgetful, socially inept, really slow (in terms of thinking), lacking common sense, bad at spelling, etc. It's sort of comedic that I'm like on two polar opposite ends of the spectrum of intelligence. It's Schrödinger's Smarts, you never know if I'm going to be an idiot or actually smart. It's just that I'm neurodivergent.

I wasn't ready for the Trump voice. I was like "Oh, it'll probably be over exaggerated or something" but no, that was really good and I wheezed so hard I would've choked if I was eating anything.

Trump's voice (and everything else about him) is impossible to exaggerate or satirize, he's such a ridiculous parody of a human being that there's no way to go beyond how he already is. Trying to parody his voice only gets you to the most accurate impersonation.

Recently been getting into your videos, love the content although some of your videos are super quiet. Even doubling my computer speaker volume wasn't enough to hear Meg at certain points here and I can't hear anyone correctly from my phone. It'd mean a lot to me and probably others with noise sensitivity issues too if the volume was adjusted to be similar to other channels :)

The thing is, being naturally ahead too early in school can suck because it deprives you of actual learning skills and Social Skills. So when it finally does get hard you don't know how to work on your skills to learn the solution to the problem, and then you can't ask for help because you don't know how to talk to people, and you can't ask the teacher for help because they'll know you weren't paying attention, AND NO I'M NOT SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE!!!

I have only very cursory knowledge of Japanese, but I'm pretty sure "Watashi wa Kazama Reiko desu" (私はかざまれいこです) just means "I am Reiko Kazama" and not "I am a survivor" That troper probably just watched an anime with english subs and didn't look up what the Japanese word for survivor actually is. Big "got a chinese character tattooed that they thought meant 'power' but it actually means 'chicken noodles'" vibes
