Today we check out two very epic ant setups at the American Museum of Natural History (Susan & Peter Solomon J. Family Insectarium), located in New York City USA. The species on display are Honeypot ants (Myrmecocystus sp.) and a species of leafcutter ant. The two setups are contrasting as one is more naturalistic and the other much more archetectural in design. Hope you enjoy this vlog as I take you through these two setups and talk about the biology and behaviours of both ant colonies. Ant love forever!

Honestly, both exhibits were cool. The Honeypot's were way more active with all those hanging feeders, so that was amazing, and the Leaf-cutter's was impressive, to see that fungus growing so healthy was amazing!

Gotta say, loved both of those exhibits! Both had their pros, I liked the honeypot ant one for how compact and simple it was, what a great way to showcase your ants, especially ones that actually need the space inside their nest to spread out. Admittedly though, the leafcutter exhibit was amazing, especially the design in making sure the ants had a long way to go to find their leaves, what a trek! Reminded me of your old black crazy ants setup.

My thot for the honeypots was that they should have a "drought" now & then so they can make use of the repletes instead of just constantly making more🤔🤷

The installation of leafcutter ants is very innovative. It also allows you to see how big it is when the colony grows and to guess that the anti-escape measures.

Australian here, honey pot ants are awesome! Growing up we just called them honey ants, but once in like 5th or 6th grade, our class went on a camp excursion. And during the camp we were taught by a indigenous woman how to eat them, along with witchetty grubs. Was scared at first but generally a memorable and cool experience. 👍

I personally think that the leaf cutter ant set up is the best because the thought put into the easy accessible chambers and the gigantic out world and elaborate paths designs to mimic the path that the leaf cutter ants would take in nature.

Both setups had their pros and I really liked each for their individual virtues. Both catered very heavily for aesthetics though, and they sacrificed some elements of comfort for the colonies to enhance their visibility. I am all for a massive enclosure❤, but like that you go for more naturalistic setups with some comfort in mind.

What really blows my mind about Leaf cutter ants is that when the female reproductives leave the nest on their nuptial flight is that they take a small sample of the fungus that they farm with them so that they can start their own fungus gardens when they have enough workers. Which means that they have to keep the spores viable in a similar way to the way that they keep the males sperm viable for the rest of their reproductive lives! Ants are such fascinating creatures with so much incredible variety across the many, many species of them! Ant love for eternity!!
@AntsCanada
@AntsCanada 7 ай бұрын
Yes, super cool right?! Wish fungus-growing termites were this easy yo start up!
@robynpicknell7801
@robynpicknell7801 7 ай бұрын
Well the first step in that endeavour is to identify exactly which species of termite you have, then you get the kind of woody debris they use from close to a nest of the same species to put in with them. That way you have an excellent chance of giving them the correct species of fungus that they farm from the spores on the debris after the fungus fruited (? flowered maybe? not sure of the correct term). Of course it is very easy for me to say all of this when you are the one actually putting ALL the work into the whole thing to begin with. I do know that is really, really difficult to get it right, but if anybody can do it it is you! And I am absolutely certain that you will get there in the end. Myself and all of your subscribers, fans and supporters are with you 100% of the way. Enjoy the rest of your stay in the States and have a safe journey home. Looking forward to your next video! Ant love eternally!

This is so cool! I had no idea how beautiful and diverse ants were until I started watching your channel! I feel like this would be like a dream job for you ^.^ creating dream exhibits in natural museums to maximize the visibility of trailing and the nests sounds so cool! I really loved these exhibits, it’s very clear they put a lot of thought and work into creating the leaf cutter exhibit, that was beautifully laid out and was still natural to the ants :) Thinking that some of the kids there might have become interested in ants like we are because their parents took them here that day is really neat, it’s wonderful to see the interest in nature and science in children :)

The leafcutters have always intrigued me greatly, they are so amazing. There are literally 4 things going on that ONLY occur with in the leafcutter nests... The Ants, Their bacteria, the fungus and the weed fungus all are relient upon eachother in some form and exist nowhere else in the world on their own. Its amazing that 4 species live together and rely on eachother to survive, while one is bad and unwanted it couldnt exist anywhere else on its own... absolutely crazy!!! Pretty ironic that both colonies showcased in this video are the 2 that i would want to own successful colonies of... what crazy awesome specializations that evolved to occupy some pretty specific niches... so cool!

I like the Honeypot setup. It looks like a great setup for smaller, slower growing populations of ants. The downside to it might be getting access to do house keeping. Also because you have all the springtails and beneficial mites plus the other life in the soil it might not be an ideal setup without a bit customization. I could see ghost ants in a setup like that. The leafcutter ants with the grid of spheres kind of reminesent of the Avatar setup. The one with spheres suspended in branches. Those glass spheres, the much smaller mote with fast moving water and some Ants Canada formicarium towers and regular flat formicariums could be elements for futuristic looking ant environment. Really cool video.

The leaf cutter set-up would be great for the fungus termites. You could actually grow the mushrooms! Each dome would need half of it to pop off that way you could retrieve the mushrooms & make sure the temp & humidity is right for fruiting. I could send detailed instructions along with rough drafts of drawings. I know a decent amount about growing mushrooms. I have a few species under my belt. I just harvested some king oysters I grew, cant wait to eat them lol.
