Hi Erin, studio speakers are touted to be "neutral". Is this really true when compared to a living room hifi speaker? If so why should we not use a studio speaker for everyday listening. I have a cheap Presonus monitor for my computer and I often enjoy it more than my other hifi speakers.

This is the best audio review video I've seen in a while. It's not just about utilizing measurement data and subjective listening, but also about framing the problem, demonstrating awareness, and candidly expressing limitations and uncertainties. Great to see some solid feedback on product! Kali Audio seems to pull off some great stuff. Unique use case, like a creator type on a tour bus.. teens or young producers in a situation with a laptop. Yah .. It works for some people. Love that Ending. haha. Cut* Keep up the quality work!

The 8-10 kHz on-axis hole is an artifact of the round "waveguide" (midwoofer cone) that the tweeter "sees". The reflections around the mouth of this "waveguide" arrive after a path-length-induced delay, and so there will be a frequency region in which this delay causes the reflections to arrive out-of-phase with the direct sound, resulting in a cancellation dip like the one we see. This sort of on-axis dippage happens with any round horn or waveguide or coaxial, and is present even with a very large radius round-over. The dip disappears off-axis because off-axis the reflection's arrival is smeared in time rather than arriving all at the same time. The frequency of the dip rises as the microphone distance increases, because the path length difference is geometrically reduced. Imo in most applications it would be a mistake to EQ out this dip because it is ONLY present in the on-axis sound, BUT in THIS application (NEARFIELD and assuming ON-AXIS listening) imo it DOES make sense to EQ it.

LOL! I might do the same thing! That's funny. This one was tough because I respect what it did, but I don't get the use case. I don't know if it's possible, but if they were able to put the bass module on the floor, and lower the crossover for the satellites, it might be easier to recommend in certain scenarios. The product does what they say it's supposed to do. I just don't know WHY they chose to do what they did.

The pair of you made for a great review. Yep, you both came to the same conclusion. I also agree these are too awkward to use on my desk. I use a single 43in monitor. There would be no eay to get the keyboard, mouse, monitor, and speakers in a good position.

I think what could give context to this oddball is a comparison to other compact pro monitors like the Neumann KH 80 or Genelec 8010. Seems a bit too unwieldy to use as a desktop bookshelf set up, but maybe it has qualities needed for laptop producers who don't want to mix in headphones.

Let's just say my IN-8v2s (perched on Gator desktop stands) aren't going anywhere -- and their MSRP is only $200 more than an IN-UNF system.

I have this system and actually have the coaxial units on stands about arms length away on the sides of my desk due to the available space on my desk right now. They sound really good like that for music and movies. I do some music/recording/mixing and for that I would put them in their assigned spots if I was really trying to do a good mix but for my purpose they are great overall for now. Basically I'd say kinda what I think you guys were getting at, these are great if they fit your purpose. They are a bit better at being loud to you without being loud to your neighbors than if you bought the Kali in 8s or some other larger monitor/bookshelf speakers. I really do appreciate the sound of the coaxial design.

Are edge difractions an issue? Circular baffle is supposed to be the worst in that aspect, and for some reason instead of making them spherical they put a circular baffle

Considering the phase related characteristics/issue, it is bringing something better than headphones? Like dt900prox. A little bit of eq and crossfeed is probably making headphones a much better solution. And headphones save so much more space.

I suspect the package will be used more by those who want accurate sound but without the studio monitor size for music, games, etc. Would be cool to fabricate some custom brackets that allow for these to mount right next to the monitor.

I would guess that Kali was thinking that most would place their monitor (single) on top of the bass module... which would then work quite well... along with the speakers now fitting 'under' the monitor.

Hmmm. I expected the x-over point to be a problem when i first read about these. 280 hz simply is too high. I find the fact that you need to place the bass unit so near the speakers cause of the x-over point beats the purpose of what they try to be. Meaning, being compact speakers but then out of the blue, “ oh! I need to put the module in front of my face also!” . i like the concept but the module on a desk defeats its purpose. Thanks for the wonderful test guys!

Just a thought: I bet you could get lots n lots of music production ppl interested in your data driven reviews on upscale (or any) monitors for mixing etc. hopefully they could send them / loan them out. If they’re not scared of honest impressions and actual data then it could be a coaxial win I figure.

Weird concept, but I guess we need innovators at the end of the market that can't afford huge horns etc. I never really understood how Focal and others can mount car audio tweeters up in the A-pillar and the midbass drivers down in the door panels, but a desk is a totally different environment to a car. Interesting discussion.

At the frequency range it plays it doesn’t matter. 200Hz wavelength is 67.5 inches; far greater than the height of the subwoofer module.

I've been hearing great things about IK Multilmedia iLoud brand for desk top and mobile studios but, I haven't seen an actual in depth review of any of their models. I was looking at the Kali IN-UNF however, I was taken back because of the price. Now that I seen your review of the product I definitely don't think these would work for what I need them for. Which is sad because I love my IN-5s so much.

Audioengine A2+ plus S8 combo would be much more to my liking (Well, and just outright better IMO)... or spend $100 more and skip the Subwoofer and get the Audioengine HD6 (if you wish to do without the extra Sub box / placement).

I actually bought it. Not sure I would have if I saw this review first. In terms of space on the desk they work very well for me. Everything is under my ultra wide monitor which is suspended from an arm. If I got the normal bookshelves, they would have to take space to the left and right and I like having a second monitor to my left so that wouldn't work so well. In terms of sound quality, I think they are more accurate and are perhaps better for editing work than my Bose Companion 5s, but they dont go nearly as low. For pleasure, I prefer the Bose. For work, the Kali. Its quirkiness does concern me though. What is the best way to EQ the IN-UNF's if I am using USB?

Thanks for the feedback and perspective. For EQ, I just used iTunes built-in equalizer. Not many bands but enough to knock down the trouble spots.

OMG OMG sorry to bother you two again. I have the app Loopback and it's allowing me to use the ID-UNF with my Bose Companion 5 sub! Best of both worlds :) Still would like to eq before it all, but its a start!

I'm currently using the Kali IN-UNF system, and have been really pleased with the results. A couple of things: (1) The measurements in the review were taken with one of the bass units upside down. Yes, the bass unit can be used upright, or flat on a desk, but the flat-desk setup here had the bass unit upside down, which would have then thrown off the placement of the satellite speakers somewhat when using the provided placement template. Would this make a massive difference in performance or measurement data? I have no idea. But no doubt neither the bass unit, nor the satellites were in the optimal, recommended positions. (2) To counter the idea that the system doesn't really save that much space, I can only offer that it certainly DID in my case. I recently moved over to a very small corner desk setup, and had been using a larger-format (and fancier) monitor and sub system. In this new setup, I simply could not fit my larger monitors in any kind of optimal position along with my dual screens, nor did I have room for the big sub underneath. The IN-UNF has allowed me to get two adjoining 24" monitors on a stand sitting on top of the bass unit (I have them about 5 inches above the bass unit itself) with ample room for keyboard, mouse, ipad, laptop, small mixer, and other miscellaneous bits in front. It freed up quite a bit of room in my case. Most importantly, I've really been enjoying the sound of the system (once I dialed in the eq/dip switch placement). Granted, I'm the target user here. Of course this won't be the ideal product for everyone. But I suspect there are other folks with similar setups/environments who could benefit from this system.

@@ErinsAudioCorner this would be true in most cases , but if you actually look at the way the bass unit is designed, there is rubber padding and a huge dip that actually removes a lot of contact with the desk, I read somewhere about this unit balancing itself taking into account the potential vibrations that may occur on a desk, surely having the unit upside down would impact that in some way ?

If they expand this system to cover immersive audio/surround/atmos they're potentially sitting on the best budget system for that application to date. Besides that potential, i don't think these are worth it.

In its video showing the bass unit in its prone position (t=180s), Kali Audio has the bass unit's larger surface, the one with the swirly pattern on it, facing UP. In your video, also coincidentally at t=180s, the bass unit's larger surface faces DOWN. 30 seconds later, your video also show the unit upside down on the Klippel. Hopefully this is clear - I want to emphasize that I'm talking about what you describe as the "lay flat" position. I can lie on a bed tummy down or tummy up, right? That's the difference I'm asking about - you seem to have tested the product with the bass unit's "tummy" facing the opposite direction from the one that Kali Audio depicts.

If Kali make this unit without bass unit, it can work with lp6 in generally. I like my lp6 v2's but in generally i am wondering in5's because sometimes i there is a lack of mids in lp6's. Mid unit of these satellites may be useful near lp6's maybe. Actually i am searching a good and cheap eq for increasing mids to my ipad.

280Hz is definitely a high crossover. Reminds me of old-school computer speakers like the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1/5.1/Ultra 5.1, where the satellites just can't reach down low.

The three-way Kalis -- with the same mid/tweeter driver used in the IN-UNF's "orbs" -- cross over at 300Hz.

I don't understand the purpose of your comment at all. The low frequency unit is not a subwoofer. And this coax unit has never been crossed over below 280Hz. It's meant for that.

@@Gamez4eveR The problem is that it will need to be well centered between the speakers since it goes up so high. With interaural timing differences, any subwoofer can be localized when you are in its direct sound field, and it will be perceived as a point source and all the bass will appear to originate from where it is when it plays by itself, even when playing pure tones in the sub-bass region. 280Hz is getting pretty darn close to where the head and torso become significant acoustically, and having level differences as well between the ears will just exacerbate things if it has to be off to one side. If you can get it behind the monitor it should be ok, albeit the soundstage will be a bit myopic in the LF region since the satellites are just small speakers.

How many good speakers and good audio gear is ruined by people putting too much weightage on measurements. It's like only drinking distilled water because it's pure but avoiding coffee and coconut water because they don't measure well.

@@leo11877 it's important to note that the measurements help describe what we're hearing. Where the magic happens is in correlating what we hear with what we measure. Neither I, nor Erin is in favor of using one and not the other. To answer your other question about measuring them in different ways, it gives us a better understanding of the speaker by isolating certain components. By doing that, we have a better idea of how it might sound in different scenarios. This is proven in the video when Erin's predicted response closely matches my in-room measured response. Accuracy is more important in this case, because these are meant as studio monitoring where accuracy is a top priority. To your example of drinks. Imagine having amazing coffee beans only to have your drink ruined by dirty water. That's the reason we want a "transparent" sound system. We want the true flavor of the bean to come through uninhibited by the flavor of the water. If you don't know how the water "measures" for purity, and all you're basing your judgement on is the flavor of the final drink, then if it tastes bad, you might incorrectly think it's due to bad coffee beans when in fact, it's just the dirty water.
