Però divennero oltre 100 in pochi anni, reggiungendo Caserta, Pompei e Castellammare ed il confine con lo stato pontificio, arrestandosi solo per gli appennini, che per la tecnica dell'epoca erano un ostacolo insormontabile. E non era affatto un giocattolo per la famiglia reale, era una ferrovia suburbana trafficatissima per l'epoca, con treni ogni mezz'ora dal mattino alla sera. Tanto è vero che fu necessario ampliare la stazione di Napoli in previsione del collegamento per Roma, che fu realizzato solo dopo l'Unità, ma su progetto già esistente dell'epoca borbonica e di cui erano già iniziati da tempo i lavori.

@@Neldot c'è una ragione se l'ampliamento della stazione avvenne dopo l'unità:i Borboni non avevano l'interesse di spendere le loro risorse nello sviluppo; di fatti si è visto il livello di industrializzazione che hanno lasciato all' Italia in oltre l'agricoltura era in condizioni penose e la sua modernizzazione fu portata avanti solo da alcuni proprietari illuminati. È vero che l'interesse dei Borboni era sviluppare il Mezzo giorno anche perché era l'unico stato medievale dell'Europa ma il loro impegno fu insignificante.
