Ya know, U2 gets a lot of flack from the rock community and rock fans, but their music is great, timeless, inspiring and very epic at times. They set the standard for alternative new wave rock. Very creative and original good music.

Interestingly enough, restraint is often a word used by critics over the years to praise the song. It's a song about the tension in the singer's marriage at the time. One the one hand, they were young and in love, married and had been together since high school. They soon welcomed their first child too. Yet suddenly with this album, u2 became the biggest band in the world. After years of hard work, there was a lot of touring to do, press interviews, etc. All this put a lot of strain on the relationship. Bono saw it as hard-earned success that would benefit his family and friends. His wife had a hard time with the intense touring schedule and millions of women screaming for her husband. So the song builds on this. There is that slow yet steady build-up of tension and conflict that's still tempered with love and desire. They could have easily burst into a big guitar solo that was so common in 80s songs but I always thought it brilliant that they didn't. U2's best songs often don't give you a clear-cut resolution. Life isn't always like that (check out One for an example of this... Sometimes you just have to agree to disagree and carry on). Instead, they just let the heat build up throughout the song and then let it smolder like a banked fire. It was a remarkable choice by the band and I always felt it worked well. Anyway, just my 2 cents; thanks for the review!

“Nostalgia” comment spot on. U2 are naturally “minimalist” and this song is a perfect example. The ending of this song could have gone somewhere far you wanted it to go but instead... it gave you a craving and left you for wanting more. No flashiness..The whole “less is more” approach. “Mystery Is Everything”

The restraint is INTENTIONAL. It’s what makes the song so unique & genius. Mysterious. It constantly rides the edge-that edge of tension between exploding into some big power ballad or going all quiet, dark & moody. That mirrors the song’s lyrics & meaning. The singer is caught in a torturous state of “in-between.” Can’t live with her; can’t live without her. Nothing is resolved. And the best part of the song is that this enduring tension keeps it interesting, listen after listen, year after year. I think if the band had decided to go the conventional route & take the song in one clear direction or the other, it may have been a big hit for a few months-but then disappeared as most songs do. U2 stuck to their vision & now this is a classic loved & listened to by music fans generation after generation. Try some of their other songs as well. U2 are legends.

this song leaves you with so much hope, so much passion, so much emotion.. this was for his wife.. Bono has such unique vocal range and even his close friends, bandmates are one of a kind. 20 years old and i was listening to music like this at such an early age. . i can repeat and play on repeat and i never get tired of U2.. I'm half irish myself and we have alot of fire within our hearts..that burning desire.. and many can agree. legendary at its finest.. as a artist myself i have my own version of this song.. he has that falsetto type of voice..so much raw, pure energy for his true love.. anyway all love never any hate..

ONLY band\artist to have a number one album in FOUR different decades. Each having it’d on distinct sound. Plus check out their Super Bowl halftime show. It was only like 4 months after 9/11 and is widely considered the best halftime performance ever. They also performed in New Orleans for the reopening of the Super Dome after hurricane Katrina. They were joined by Green Day for the song The Saints are Coming. It is pretty effin great. Try to do live versions when possible as they really put on a a great show. Exit, End of the World, Please, Kite, One Tree Hill and Discotheque will give you a taste of their diversity.

Definitely react to *live versions.* U2 are, at heart, a live band. They are all about creating an experience and a connection with the audience. They pioneered things like the B stage and the ramp for stage production of music act tours-which now seem omnipresent for big recording artists but U2 basically invented & popularized it. There’s NOTHING like U2 live. Legends.

The high pitched sound is some 'infinite guitar' invention that they borrowed when they heard the guy playing it at the studios they were using. Beautiful song. Another classic is 'Pride (In The Name Of Love)'

That's called an E-Bow. They used it also for almost every performance of "The Unforgettable Fire" when The Edge is playing two guitar solos: first - little melodic thing, and also the main one which originally was done by the orchestra

That's just a classic which was released in 1987 but it sounds like something a little bit from 2000's. Bono is them lead singer/"rhythm-guitarist", them "lead-guitarist"/keyboardist/background vocalist is The Edge, them bassist is Adam Clayton, and them drummer is Larry Mullen. I love the song's outro with just two guitars, drums and bass guitar

IMHO, the greatest live performance of U2's classic "With Or Without You" was at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum on November 14th, 1987 from Day On the Green there at the Coliseum. The concert in it's entirety is available on KZfaq audio only. Live version is also longer with more verses thrown in with more exciting climax.

Yeah. I've stoped and thought about what the lyrics meant at: I can't live with or without you. To me, it's just the fact that he doesn't want to be at a stage of doubts. He wants her in his life or She wants him in her life, no doubts allowed.

The Joshua Tree was written lyrically by Bono specifically for & about America. Bono was so adept & brilliant lyrically, that he he could write songs with a surface meaning & a deeper more macro meaning as well. While this song is written in a person to person context, it is also a song written by the world to America. Bono is a outright genius & Poet Laureate for a generation.
