The courts have made it more difficult for state and local governments to control guns. Few states and cities back then allowed concealed carry and having a gun under the seat or in any other place where it was not in plain view was illegal. There were consequences for doing that. The courts and states have changed that which caused a large increase in the amount of vehicles that carry guns. Many of these gun owners don't lock their vehicles up which gives kids access to guns. People who bash liberals don't realize that our current gun policies ane too liberal. Conservative means resistance to change and less liberty but liiberal gun policies are a big part of the conservative agenda.

@@danielebrparish4271 Since I have no political affiliation, I could care less as far as liberals and conservatives. Growing up in Chicago, getting a gun wasn't a problem...we chose not to get them. They use to leave trains full of guns unlocked on the South and West side, knowing they would be stolen. Personally, I hate guns, the only time I've ever had one in my hands was when I was in the Army. However, I'm not one that believes that since I don't like something others shouldn't be allowed to partake either. Most legal guns owners are responsible...it's not the laws!!

It has been my experience in 41 years of practice that most of them do but are sometimes constrained by statues one way or another. Some legislatures pass no exceptions punishments that seem too Draconian in some cases, others make certain factors pre-eminent that lead to lighter sentences than the crime would demand. It is not always the judge's decision alone. He has to follow the guidelines as set in the statue unless he can show good cause why he didn't. Unfortunately when someone is sentenced to probation, prison, or to pay with his or her life, someone is unhappy unless it was a negotiated plea bargain, and even then someone gave more than they felt they should have.

@@LinkRocks you have absolutely zero idea whatsoever of my thoughts on how the death penalty works, so that is a ridiculous statement. You also have no clue as to my experiences with prisons, and you may be of the “opinion” that a life sentence is proper punishment, but that is exactly what it is, an “opinion”. In my personal opinion, I believe that neither option is particularly attractive, but judging by the way the majority of death row inmates constantly explore every possible avenue to appeal their sentence, it would indicate that life is preferable to death. Perhaps some people have crossed that line and have forgone the privilege of making that decision?

LOL we need the old school judges. A new young judge would of given 20yrs. This guy is from another era where criminals were afraid of getting caught. But you do you

As long as he's mentally competent and fair, who cares how old he is? Now an old DOCTOR, that's another story!

He probably is retired. And now he’s a judge. It’s a privilege to get old. You will be lucky if you make it there

I agree that the so-called contemporary judges give out 5-20 yrs even though the killers give victims' death sentences w/no possibility ever to return.

Having to sit and listen to that judge talk is worse than any jail sentence. I almost died of boredom.
