As a teenager during the Summer when school was out, my brothers and I would spend 1 month during our vacation collecting bags of leaves and grass clippings from the sidewalk to make our own compost. I didn’t like doing it then, but I am glad I know how to make my own compost now.

I also add all the veggies, coffee and egg shells scraps to my compost pile. Another good way to bring the nutrient back to the soil and not to a land field. The smell in the coop can me managed with the deep litter method which actually it is very beneficial in cold months.

I used to use straw to hold moisture into the soil, but it's loaded with seeds, so it was sabotaging my beds. I learned to use leaf mold from watching your channel. In my town, they fill my 10' trailer with leaf mold for $10, and high quality food compost for $40. It takes a LOT of work off of my plate to be able to just go pick it up as needed.

Another great resource for compost: spent coffee grounds from coffee shops (starbucks) that you can get for free whenever you're in town. 1 part spent coffee grounds mixed with 3 parts leaves => great stuff for the garden.

Howdy Pete! Another great video on making good quality compost at home. Really appreciate you taking the time to show how important the basics are. If you don't have good quality soil, might as well buy veggies from the store lol. Have a safe and Happy New Year Pete! Looking forward to following along with you in 2024. Thanks for sharing 🤠

Pete, get yourself a big scoop shovel. Makes for a lot less work.

I've used snow shovels before. Better but not the best. Need a good scoop shovel.

In store mostly is from human waste plants, what comes from our bathroom, showers, etc. They say that they check for harmful chemicals, but it impossible to check every cubic inch or cubic yard. How many acres do you have?

@@petebeasttexashomesteading Thank you for replying. We have 40 acres and rotate 3 compost piles. Thinking to buy a Tractor similar to yours. Never used Tractor, don't know much about them. Backhoe and front loader are essential. Can you advise where to find a good deal, good brands and what to look for in the tractor? How long does it takes to learn how to operate one?

@@genevelis6075 Just look up local tractor stores and companies and go visit them. Tell them exactly what you need a tractor for and get some advice. Then do a little more research on your own. But buy from a local tractor place so that you have a relationship when service is needed. Any reputable place you purchase from will show you how to operate it.
