In August I decided to give up everything I owned and walked to Scotland all the way down from the south coast of England 3 months walking. I made it as far as Whitby in North Yorkshire, after visiting Wale's, London, Lincoln and Bath plus many more towns, it was an empowering moment in my life. And I'll make it to Scotland when I resume in March 2023
@iLeetjeeh
@iLeetjeeh Жыл бұрын
That sounds amazing! Would you mind delving a little bit deeper into your journey? You said you walked from the south coast to Whitby. Ofcourse I do not know your starting point. But if I look up the distance between Lands End (Wales) to Whitby it says roughly 440miles (708km). So 3 months walking would mean you walked 4.8miles (7.7km) a day. Withouth sounding disrespectful or snobbish...that sounds a bit low? Now I understand you didn't just walk in a straight line. You've mentioned visiting London, Lincoln and Bath. So I assume you walked along the south and then went up? When I plot that into Google Maps it comes out to roughly 527miles (848km). Which would mean 5.85miles (9.4km) a day. Now again, without sounding arrogant, disrespectful or snobbish...a healthy person can walk 10km in less then 2 hours. Furthermore Google Maps says that it would take 7 days to walk. Ofcourse that doesn't include sleeping, occasional stops/sightseeing and general resting. But still 7 days --> 3months is a huge difference. Again I'm asking because this is something I would LOVE to do! I'm just (annoyingly) curious about your method/choises!

It is incredibly inspiring. When I was 24, I did set out on what was supposed to be a tour from my home town in the Netherlands all the way to Kyrgyzstan. I did not make it there - after reaching Helsinki I had enough, and simply took a ferry to St. Petersburg, then flew home. But I learned so much about myself. In my case, I learned that I actually really like the certainties of having a job and a fixed home. But that was really a discovery! Because for a long time I had been pondering on what it would be like to truly be off the grid for a long time. I'm 33 now and am fully settled with a family. But I know for sure that if I had not made that journey that I would always have been wondering the "what if". And now I know that, at least for me, ordinary family life with an ordinary job actually is the way. I still really like watching videos like this though. There is so much beautiful stuff out there on the road and it is great to be out there for a while.

I've traveled the world by moto, 30+ countries - Prudhoe Bay, Ushuaia, Europe, 21,000 miles in one trip around the world (RTW) - but everywhere I've been there are always adventure bicyclists! The Hall Road in Alaska, the Road of Bones in Siberia, Ruta 40 in Patagonia. So impressive. Always the bicyclists. And you, Martijn, are an excellent narrator, video maker. The only form of description I can think of for this video is: OMG!!! Man, starting with the way you tell your experience, the filming, music, the map details, everything! I am so jealous of your courage to get of the "cycle" of normal living. When you were describing your old city life routine... it mataches with everything I am living now and it is so frustrating that we spend 99% of our life not responding to our prime instincts: getting outside, working with our bare hands, with our body, connecting with nature. Please let me honor your thrive to do that, to do what the most of us don't find the courage for, and for sharing this amazing story and experience with all of us! Also, I am loving your videos on your new journey building your own off-grid house ;)

When I was in my 40's (many years ago) I was driving alone from the mountains in Colorado back east, pulling a small trailer full of heavy stuff. On the plains, on one of those roads that goes straight from horizon to horizon, totally flat everywhere you looked, I saw in my rear view mirror a huge thunderstorm coming towards me, going in the same direction as me. I was going 70 miles an hour and the storm overtook me in just two hours. It dumped apple sized hail on me for so long I couldn't see the front of my car. I pulled over and it shook my car violently for a long time. I thought my car and the equipment in the trailer were going to be really banged up, but once the storm was past me, I got out to look and everything was OK - no damage at all! I'm still convinced that if I hadn't been pulling such heavy stuff, I'd have been blown miles off the road end over end. Nature's a powerful thing, but if it's not your time, it's not your time... so I really relate to your experience in the desert.

As a commuter bike rider, who rides a two wheeled recumbent, due to back and neck problems. I love watching video's like this. Makes me wish I was ten years younger, and had the money to just head off. I have to grin when I hear people talk about dong 100Km in a day, that's only 62 miles. I used to do one hundred mile days back when I was in my late 30's early 40's, when I was still riding a Mountain bike. I miss those days. Any ways, you did a great job of filming. I will watch it all. P.S. I have ridden in places that where so quiet my ear's ached to hear something. Which is why when I do go on a all day bike ride. I have music with me. Not earbuds or head phones, but a small pair of blue tooth speakers, connected to my phone, which has gigabytes of music on it. It helps take your mind off of what your doing, plus it gives you a rhythm to ride too. Just my two cents worth.

This blew my mind. Quitting is just not in the person's psyche. A calm but beast of a man, truly amazing. The filming is fantastic too. 👏👏 Inspiringly jaw dropping beauty.

Wow. I've visited most of the United States, but in a vehicle, which allows for a margin of separation from the world around you. A trip like this, on a bike, I can only imagine.

One of, if not THE best & certainly most inspiring road trip films i've seen. You clearly put a ridiculous amount of effort into so many facets of this journey - & that period of your life! You deserve many things, well done Martijn, truly awesome!

Martijn. Im lost for words. I could see that youre actually doing it for the sake of just doing it. Not because you wanted to make a exceptionally cool video like this one or to tell tales of your travels when you get back and for that reason. You have my respect. To a normal rational person i would say take care but to you... take it up a notch!!!

Blijf delen, we kijken hier met het hele gezin en genieten van je video's en zijn benieuwd naar hoe je plek wordt in Italië!

My goodness, I am delighted to see your latest sharing! You apparently did not take any rest after the series # 7 of building your place in the Italian Alps. Good on you! Three take away: 1. Your Italian cabinet creation story starts to make a complete sense. 2. You were just about right as a San Franciscan; actually, you would perfect to be in Berkeley! Trust you did visit this side of bay. 3 Your consistency: a very detail-oriented approach in everything you do, your strong sense of visual storytelling, your simple old fashioned grit! Most of all, your generosity of passing on constructive tips and experiences. You have done your late grand father proud. It is both a joy and a privilege to get a glance of your journey! What a breath of fresh air, especially in this increasingly chaotic and uncertain world. Be well.

So wonderful. Just bought your book. In the 1940s my dad would take me all over New Zealand. The roads were gravel. Once we had a leaking petrol tank and he produced a packet of chewing gum. I had to chew it to stick on the tank. We made it to a garage and later got a double tank. Te Anau was my favourite place. No tourists in those days.
