It was a crime, that's what it was. They could have done something beautiful with Jake, but they chose the lowest common denominator.

Yeah, the finale even acknowledged that by having Alan tell Detective Wagner (Arnold Schwarzenegger) that Jake "Wasn't dumb at the beginning. He got dumb later on".

I caught the finale so I could see how they decided to end it, which was terrible. One of the worst finales I've seen. They could have done something nice and wholesome with the characters, but instead decided to make the whole thing a joke with self-referential humor and 4th-wall breaks. Not sure why Chuck Lorre went so meta with it.

I stopped watching after Charlie was gone..

The show started to loose it's charm when Jake started becoming a teenage mudhead, Alan pettiness grew and Charlie's real carefree lifestyle started to catch up to him, which was clearly visible in his looks later in the show. After he left, there was no reason to watch it anymore.
