1962 Pontiac Grand Prix Super Duty
High Bid at Mecum Auctions Kissimmee 2022 - $190,000
In 1962, Pontiac introduced the Grand Prix, offering the 421 Super Duty V-8 performance package later in the year. The Super Duty package cost an additional $2,000 over the cost of the Grand Prix itself, making it one of the priciest muscle cars of the day, largely explaining why only 16 were ever built-supposedly only five remain today. Initially offered only with a 4-barrel carburetor, the race-bred engine produced a healthy 320 HP. Later, Pontiac engineers fit two 4-barrels to the 421, helping the massive mill produce 405 HP, and all bets were off. Even novice performance enthusiasts were smitten by these engines, and when used in the smartly appointed Grand Prix, the package became intensely interesting.
At one time part of the Allan Gartzman Collection, this particular 421 Super Duty Grand Prix is equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission and rarer, later-production dual Carter 4- barrel carburetor setup. Restored by brand expert Scott Tiemann of Supercar Specialties and later refreshed by Joe Aluise, this Super Duty Grand Prix presents fantastically well, its glass, chrome and Burgundy paint seeming without defect. Inside, the car presents equally well with a white interior of upscale Grand Prix-specific Morrokide vinyl bucket seats and a center console.
Although an automatic was an option, most were equipped with 4-speeds, and all were built with an independent front suspension with A-arms and coil springs, a 10-bolt rear axle and lightweight 8-lug aluminum wheels among a smorgasbord of other available options. The Super Duty comes with extensive documentation, including the original window sticker, title and bill of sale, a PHS letter, comprehensive restoration photos and books. This beauty provides an exciting opportunity for any performance car enthusiast to acquire one of the rarest early muscle cars ever built.

I have always been a Pontiac guy, I knew about the Super Duty but never realized that only 16 were produced with the dual carburetors When dynowed. They produced much more HP than advertised. Thanks for the video. 👍

They actually dyno tested @468 hp. There is a KZfaq video of a 421 sd and a 409 415hp Chevy engine on a dyno. The 409 barely made 410 hp and the 421 hit 468 hp. A truly engine!

No Hurst shifter? Did that start in '63?
@TwoGuysandaRide
@TwoGuysandaRide 7 ай бұрын
I believe it was an option in ‘62. Optional transmissions were a Borg-Warner T-10 four speed with Hurst shifter, or a 3 speed Roto hydra-matic. The standard shifter was a three speed. Thanks for watching!

@@TwoGuysandaRide Actually, the John DeLorean inspired, 1964 Pontiac GTO "is" the FIRST Muscle Car. The Pontiac Grand Prix, Bonneville, etc...were built on the larger, "full-size" B-body platform. These cars were NOT restricted by GM regarding the cubic inch displacement of their engines. Whereas The 1964 Pontiac Tempest was built on the new//reintroduced, "intermediate-size" A-body platform and cubic inch engine displacement restrictions were applied by GM. It took John DeLorean & a few notable others to convince GM Executives to allow The 1964 Pontiac Tempest to have "The GTO Option Package"; which included a high output, 389cid, three 2-barrel carbs, etc. The A-body platform car & its' factory installed, large cubic inch displacement engine are the 2 key factors that coined the term "Muscle Car". In 1966, The GTO became its' own car & no-longer a Tempest Option Package. Respectfully, Ben P.S. Mustangs & Camaros are NOT "Muscle Cars". They are "Pony Cars". So named because the Ford "Mustang" is the first platform of its' type (subframe chassis) to offer, factory-installed, large cubic inch displacement engines.
