1962 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty Super Stock Video Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #89
This week, we dive into drag racing history once again with a 1962 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty, featuring the race-bred 421 V8 and the aluminum front body panels. This car was successfully campaigned by the Packer Pontiac team driven by Howard Maseles. In it's day, this car ran the quarter in 11.73 at 118 MPH, good enough for a national NHRA Super Stock record. Today, it is one of the many historical Muscle Cars in the Brothers Collection.

My dad was the 2nd owner of 61' Pontiac Bonneville convertible. It came with a Tri-Power 389 c.i., 348 H.P. engine (420-A Tri-Power Tempest Model) and factory 4-speed. I remember Mom and Dad gathering up us four kids to go cruisin' on a Friday or Saturday night. Then we'd stop by the local greasy spoon and get some soft-ice cream. He was also the neighborhood mechanic (he was way ahead of his time and years). Man, the awesome cars I got to see and ride in in the late 60's and early 70's!He had the car until around 1971. Before he sold it he swapped out the original 420-A engine out with a much tamer, 389 4bbl motor.. Afterwards he de-stroked the 389 (into a 370) and dropped it into a 1940 Ford Coupe. But before he did he shortened the driveline and moved the engine back a few inches (one of the tricks of the trade back then). I don't think he ever lost a race running it up and down the local freeways.I remember how that old coupe used to shake the entire house (and my mom's dishes) when Dad would rev it up in the garage. My mom would get so ticked off at him. LOLWhat wonderful memories.....Boy, I wish I had both of those cars today!

My first car ever was a hand-me-down Baby Blue 62 Catalina 2 door hardtop, 389 with 3 on the tree, dual exhaust and positive traction. A lot of great memories driving that car and exploring the back seat. Thanks Dad! I miss you Pal.

I’d love to have that. Like a lot of old ass men I’m trying to relive my youth. In 1965 I had to sell my 348 horse 62 Grand Prix. Kind never forgot it and bought another one a week ago. I figure not much of my hard earned money is coming with me to the hereafter. Thanks for showing this awesome car.

Buddy of mine had an uncle that was a mechanic at Packer Pontiac in Detroit from the 50s thru the 70s. He would stop by during his "road-test" with some various cars. It seemed like Packer and Royal (Royal Oak Michigan) Pontiac were being sponsored by some in-house GM racing engineers although it was "officially denied". A lot of sleepers and mules were cruising Woodward, Telegraph and Stecker Avenues back then with manufacturer plates. Thanks for the great memory, glad I was born & raised in Detroit and enjoyed every minute.

I owned a 1961 Catalina just after graduating from high school in '65. It was creme white like this one with the red interior, but had the "bubble top." It was a 389 3-deuce motor with an auto tranny, as I remember it had about 348 horsepower. Seeing what bubble tops are going for today, I really wish I still had the car.

421 Super Duty......the BADDEST engine ever produced by Pontiac, and one of the baddest engines ever put in ANY muscle car of that era. Saw one crank out 488 horsepower at 6000 rpm on the dyno, BONE STOCK!!! Right before that they dyno tested a bone stock 409/409 Chevy engine and it was only able to crank out 406 horsepower at 6000 rpm. The 421SD is comparable to the Chrysler 426 Hemi, which I witnessed crank out 493 horsepower at 6000 rpm on the dyno. I'd like to see what a stock R-Code 427 Ford and BOSS 429 engine are capable of on the dyno in stock form

One of my friends bought a used Catalina 2+2 with a 421, with 2-4bbl induction, and a 4spd,. It was a big boat of a car, but was extremely fast and fun to drive. I can't remember exact numbers, but it ran in the low 13's at over 112 mph in the quarter. It could have used more gear and better tires, as it was heavy and a bit slow off the line. Once the revs came up it would scream. It was faster than most GTOs of the day.

This was the same idea as Ford used on the contemporary lightweight Galaxie models with the R-code 427. Chrysler had similar offerings with the 426 Max Wedge although they didn't feature lightened front end panels but they were sold with minimal options to keep their weight down to a minimum. No one cared about EPA fuel economy ratings in those days as regular gas sold for as little as 25 cents per gallon and 40 cents a gallon for premium was considered expensive.

Most definitely, they honestly put down at the flywheel over 490hp and 497-500+lb ft of Tq with OE casted D port heads. Kind of insane honestly. Butler tested one on thier Dyno and came up with those #,s. My 1969 Pontiac 400 four bolt main put down 480hp and 532 ft of Tq at the flywheel when it was Dynoed in 2017 by my local builder of all types of race engines with 50yrs of experience now. It’s original Nodular Iron crank was lightening, knife edged, journal’s were highly polished. Coated racing bearings were installed, 1974 SD rods were sourced, shot peened and resized 3 times. ARP series 2000 fasteners were used on the mains and rods. Billet Ross coated flat top dual relief pistons are used with titanium full floating wrist pins. It’s completed rotation assembly was balanced to within 1/4 gram across the whole assembly included my harmonic balancer and flex plate. It’s Zero decked with Butler prepared 1969 #62 heads that were bowl ported and runner cleaned and gasket matched to my current Edelbrock Torquer intake. Carb is a 1976 Quadrajet 800CFM unit that was opened up/reworked by my builder to 850+ Cfm max he told me. Fuel pump currently is a Carter 140Gph mechanical. I have 340/355 Cfm CNC ported KRE aluminum heads with portmatched gasket matched Northwind intake waiting to be installed with a Robb Mc surge tank and Quick fuel BDQ 950 with 1050 Cfm center section to be installed once it’s running and dialed in. I was told by many builders who really know what they are doing like Jeff Kauffman, a rep at Butler, two guys at SD performance, All Pontiac.com and also Lynn Mcarty and his current Pontiac N/A record breaking/holding Crankshaft builder Dave in Michigan, they have all told me I don’t need a stroker kit or more bore in my 400/406 to get past 600hp and Lb ft of Tq at the flywheel with it on pump gas. My KRE heads are 74cc chambers, Jeff told me 89-91octane will run well. So yes I’m very excited but want to make sure all my upgraded fuel delivery components are all set up before I go forward with the install. My current 1969 #62 heads flow Maby 260-280 Cfm if I’m lucky. She runs nice so far however if you do the math.340-350Max Cfm CNC ported Aluminum heads should get me close to 600Lb ft of Tq & 600hp, probably a lil more if my calculations are correct. They usually are 😉. I was told they can support up to 1200Cfm of fuel delivery however I’m not anxious to bend one of my Super Duty connecting rods to find out. Road Course racing is my major concern with it and perhaps an occasional 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile run. Also of course cruising with my kids during local car events as well. It’s in my1964, 3212Lb Tempest Custom 2dr post car backed by a built for racing 200-4r with two Trans oil coolers. The Trans is built to withstand up to 900Lb ft of Tq. I’ve had the car since 1995 and now finally, most recently, I’ve got it fully adjustable QA1 equipped and a quality Willwood 4 disk I installed as well. It was a lot of work to get it all right and tight but severely worth it.

I've owned a 73 Firebird, a 76 Trans Am 455 SD & a 72 Lemans. My dad owned a 64 GTO & a 74 SD Firebird. I want to kick myself every time I think of them.

The 455 SD was discontinued in 74. No SD's were built after that. Impossible to have a 76 455 SD unless one was put in it after the fact.

@@jamesspalten1772 The reason I called mine an SD is because we put the 4 Bolt main Caps on that block. My Dad also owned a machine shop called Colby Automotive. It came with the 455 & a Super T -10 4 Speed. Since my Dad built Pontiac's, we always had a set of 4 Bolt Main caps laying around. That's why I called mine a SD 455.

No such thing as a 76 SD-455. They only made them in 73-74. The SD-455 block was totally different than a regular 455. The SD had 4 bolt mains, extra webbing around the lifter bores and in the camshaft area, provisions for dry sump oiling, and a bigger distributor. The SD heads also had round ports and the regular 455 had D shaped ports. They had some other differences too but I can't remember them all. Really impressive engines. Performance and durability wise they far exceeded anything else built in 1973-74

@@jeremythompson9122 Lol, you do know they sell 4 Bolt main caps for Pontiac blocks right?? My Trans Am was a 76, the motor was not. So before you get on your little pontiac high horse, remember people do ENGINE/PARTS SWAPS to make said 455 Super Duty. #asshat

Why didn't they go with a lighter two door sedan/coupe? Do not believe an aluminum exhaust manifold would withstand the heat. 4:55

The engines with aluminum exhaust manifolds carried a warning not to exceed 70 MPH for more than 15 seconds. So, yes - you are correct! Fortunately, a dragstrip run was over way before 15 seconds...

I knew a guy that raced a '62 Catalina with the 421 since he bought it in 1964 , he thought the sedan would be faster also , so he found one and swapped in his drivetrain. The sedan ran slower than the hardtop , so he swapped everything back .

Look at it this way Plymouth Pontiac and those will be on maybe gone but at least they went peacefully they didn't stick around long enough to be turned into the boring four-door pieces of junk that everyone seems to be in love with nowadays Good god a Plymouth SUV it's enough to make you want to get sick.

The eight lug wheels were optional equipment. The aluminum center hub / brake drum replaced the stock drums and bolted on with the stock five studs, the outer rim bolted to the hub / drum with eight lugs .

Such a shame what GM has become. Just a globalist puppet corporation. I'll never buy another GM product again as long as I live. They take billions in bailouts from us then once they had our money they close multiple plants in North America and move to Mexico anyways. Typical scumbag Liberal move. They can go totally bankrupt for all I care. I'll stick to buying either Ford or Dodge products now
