TX-6 update: live beat tracking

Күн бұрынattention operators. here is a new, super useful free update for your TX-6 field mixer. we've just added live beat tracking for any incoming audio signal. this means TX-6 can now act as a sync box, listening to any audio input, it can generate a click track based on the external tempo, as well as send sync out over midi and bluetooth - all in real time! here's svante from the dev team showing us how it's done.

@@teenageengineering It is connects two guitars, a Casio PK-S1100, OP-Z, and iPad synths to a Mac running Live. Sometimes Logic. TX-6 made it easy to keep most of my gear connected daily.

@@teenageengineering not really right? the non midi drummachine tempo can be detected by TX-6, but the midi clock can only be sent via USB-C? so how to sync other (multiple) synths with that clock?

Hi can you explain a bit more how you synced the CR78? so I'm trying to receive clock from CR78 to TX6 and send clock to Sh101 but some how I can't have the clock going to SH101. and one more, would E-RM multiclock receive the clock from the Tx6 via audio do you think?

this is an amazing feature mine is able to detect it if audio comes from TRS input, but I was not able to detect it if I'm sending from DAW the audio using USB. is that correct? it's not possible from USB audio?

hmmm nice! but wait, the clock of the TX-6 only stransmits from the USB out right? so you can only sync synths via usb, or else you need an usb to MIDI DIN converter?

At 2:21, it seems the clock is routed through aux. So maybe you don’t need the din adapter!

Would it be able to track off the grid performances? What does the algorithm look for; is it purely transient based?

yes, it’s designed to handle unquantized music, although your mileage may vary. the algorithm tries to emulate human hearing, estimating audible spectrotemporal modulations.

OP-Z field and my wallet just might come out of hiding for round three, I was hit with a knock out with the build quality with the first two, add a metal casing that doesn't warp, more playable buttons, easy voice recording, better synths, some extra coolness, call it a day, a good day that will be.

I wonder how long it takes for it to pick up bpm changes. I could see this being really useful for live performances with other instruments - letting the drummer set the tempo, then having the TX-6 automatically adjust the clock to whatever synths are hooked up to it.

@@TheNamrebug I think this feature is specifically for tempo, but that's a neat idea for a future update! Have the TX-6 detect the key and send that over USB to the OP-Z Master/Transpose track alongside the bpm.

thanks for asking. beat tracking is for tempo sync only. the chord changes in the video are not programmed. they could be of course, but in the video, svante is selecting the master track and transposing the OP-Z on the fly. this is trickier but also allows for more flexibility.

Probably helps the TX-6 keep up with funky or not so obvious beats. But by the looks of it, if your audio input has clear kickdrums or snares it should be fine

What about spatial audio panning as an update? You have 6 channels, add some internal auto random panning LFO, with intelligent inverting, to the five channel; besides the drum track. Would be heaven.

@@divorcecourttHe is synchronizing the TX-6 with the Tape Player. The audio from the tape player is to pure. Recording from this kind of device is not all that advisable as one will get WOW & Flutter from the tape sliding over the play back head, the pinch bar and the pinch wheel, especially from a old player like that one he is using.

This is really interesting, but how does it behave with real instruments ie. a real drum kit? It almost seems comparable to Abletons Tempo Follow, which I find does well with a well mic’d drum kit and a solid drummer (and straight forward disco beats). Man I would love to test this feature out but I wouldn’t risk $1200 on it.

Second entry. The audio coming from the old portable Cassette is not coming from it. The signal is way to clean. What I know about old tape transport tells me this. A machine of this age would be subject to WOW & Flutter. Most probably the Pinch Roller would be saturated with tape residue to the point it can’t be remove. Also the Pinch Bar would most probably be bent which would cause the tape to slide up and down on it which would cause the audio to be distorted.

Assuming it’s in good condition, old walkmans have pretty good wow and flutter results, I have a 70s reel to reel that measures 0.12%.

Assuming, is only a word that suggests “maybe” then maybe not. The construct of this device is poor as the presenter points out. It’s a kids toy. This device nowhere close to a Real to Real recorder, is it? So what fling this into the mix?

First “Walkman” is a brand name. I don’t understand how you can suggest that the “second part of my statement in based on assumption”. Think about it! The audio that is being reproduced is way to clean for a device such as is being used. It’s only to easy to convert this Toy into a MP3 player, which I’m “assuming”🥸 it has.

@@DetroitMicroSound the form factor is the appeal. Lots of us aren’t playing out in clubs. We just want something portable, battery powered, and feature laden. Many devices are going tiny, and I’m here for it! Perfect companion for the iPad, along with the OPZ and KOII
