Probably one of the best video about putting, not trying to sell anything. I’m currently in the market for a putter so now I have a lot knowledge to consider. The problem is that most places you go to buy a putter don’t have the knowledge or understanding you went over today. Thank you again and keep the videos coming

Wow guys. Totally mind blowing as I basically bought my face balanced Scotty after making a few 10 footers at the golf store lol Love how you anticipated what my next questions would be and just went ahead and answered them. Really shows you have been through this "a few times". You talked a bit about something I have been pondering across many fitting videos which is, technique vs equipment. Basically we are all trying to get the ball to go where we want, so if we have "incorrect" clubs, we learn the physical pattern to match that club. Then we come to get fitted with a pattern that is essentially "fit" to our current clubs. We got fit to the club, instead of grooving an optimal repeatable swing first, then getting clubs that fit that. Kinda makes your job impossible :-) I'd love to hear a bit more about that. Keep up the great content. Really enjoying it and learning a ton that will eventually help me beat my friends...and that gives me joy :-)

Been watching your videos a bunch late (super addicting stuff here guys!). Anyway was at the grocery store the other day and thought of a great analogy for your club weighting/closure rate principles. I was thinking of the driver at the time, but applies here as well. I'm a home brewer and was getting a bunch of distilled water to make a Northern English Brown. So i had all these jugs of water and they happened to be toward the front of the cart (the "toe" of the cart if you will). Anyone can relate to how much more work you have to do to "close," or turn the shopping cart when you have weight at the end of it like that. As opposed to having nothing in the "toe" and a few heavy objects right at the end closest to you - you can spin it around like a top with the weighting there.

The mallet putter alignment is interesting. A few month ago using a putting station I noticed a slight pull on my putts. I always aim the putter face. In that station with all the parallel lines ,my perception of a square putter face had the alignment line slightly looking left. This is with a Rife Two Bar putter. Now I aim with the line and she goes straight. So set up is full of illusions.

This is fascinating stuff, and really backs up my fitting I had last week on quintic, my stroke has a very small arc to it so I have naturally bought mallet face balanced putters. However, at my fitting last week, the pro said my face rotation was shocking and I was basically closing the face on the backstroke and then opening as I go through, he advised a blade with some toe hang, the results were an immediate improvement of face rotation for my stroke. The plus side is I've always wanted to game s blade but never thought it would suit me. Win win. It also showed how much more important it is to be fitted for a putter

Is it really that big of a " wow" moment though? have you never been to your local golf retailer even just a few times and putted around with all the different putter head options they have? Come on now, you've really never picked up a blade putter in your life?? I mean there's a million different putter options at every Golf Galaxy dicks club champion PGA TOUR Superstore you name it try a few or try them all and stay all day... But it basically only comes down to a few different head options... The best putter for you is going to be the one that puts the ball in the hole the most times right? Do they not have a place where you can putt at your local golf store?

Thank you for a informative video. Love your content. I use both type of putters an old Odyssey 550 blade, a MacGregor Bobby Grace 6.5k mallet and Odyssey Sabertooth. Seem to use them for a bit and then switch them out - but primarily due to face feel off the inserts. High handicapper, but a decent putter.

I thought I was back and through and when I got fitted I was told almost "strong" arc. I was fitted for a 34" Evnroll ER2 and dropped from 2.2 putts per hole to 1.9. Almost 6 strokes per round between the fitting and putter. Face balanced was fighting me the whole time.

I'm really enjoying this series on Putter fitting and after watching this particular vid for the fourth time I finally understood why Ian wanted to move me into a slightly less face balanced Putter by changing over to an Evnroll ER2. As a Right hander I always have a tendency to aim right with an Open face, by changing to the ER2 this will enable me to close the face more at impact than my faced balanced Putter would do. Totally fascinating! It would be cool if you Guys could also do a vid on Putter alignment lines etc, personally I prefer simply use the face to align my Putter aim, rather than using lines and shapes at the back (away from the face) of the Putter.

If you can fly over for a fitting I would definitely recommend it. I persuaded MrsBandit that it would be great idea flying over from the UK for a combined holiday in Toronto and Fitting at TXG. The whole trip was a blast, Toronto is a great City to visit and the TXG fitting experience was awesome. We have another visit pencilled in for 2020, though by then I expect Ian will have opened up in other locations, so maybe there will be another exciting trip/destination on the agenda✈⛳👍😎

@@madeinkorea7 Yes I know, it does sound counter intuitive. But for some strange reason it works, it might be the Evnroll face that has something to do with it. Whatever the reason my miss to the right just isn;t there anymore. Give it a try, it might work for you as well.

I’ve been using your methodology of how toe hang works with much success, so thank you! However, I believe I saw some literature from odyssey that says it’s the opposite - that face balance won’t close for a strong arc. I’m with you on this one, because the proofs in the pudding, but why would odyssey say that?
@apaulmcdonough2170
@apaulmcdonough2170 2 жыл бұрын
Face Balanced will stay *Square to Path,* so Odyssey is Correct about *Rate of Closure of Face Angle.* Toe Flow *SLOWS Rate of Closure of Face Angle* because the *PATH of the Stroke* is Closing the Putter Face. Circular Path of Putter Head (ARC) vs. Rotation of the Face. The Putting Stroke, like a Full Golf Swing, is a combination of both.

Another excellent and informative video! I recently purchased some different weights for my Taylormade Spider Tour Black putter and have been experimenting with different weights on the toe and heel side to help prevent my left miss (face closing). The best setup I have tested with is having a 6 gram weight in the toe and 8 gram weight in the heel. This video just gave me the idea to check the toe hang angle of the two setups and funnily enough there is a 2 degree difference in toe hang between the weight locations! This explains why I am keeping the face more square at impact and losing less putts left. Is changing head weights something you guys have tested?

You guys continue to make me question everything I think I know about golf equipment (which is probably a good thing)! Something I’m curious about, and maybe others are too, in regards to putters, is how the hosel/shaft type(bend?) effects face balance/toehang in a putter. And also how that changes the stroke of the putter, or balance of the putter, in combination to where the shaft connects to the putter head. Also what impact shaft offset has! Just something to think about putting out! Or maybe it’s a simple answer you can just leave in a reply on here lol. Much love guys

Hi Guys. I have a random question. Assuming a person is gripping a putter enough and it is not spinning in theirs hands, how can weight changes along the face really open or close the putter through impact? The way I visualize the putter working is that your arms control the alignment of the face and there isn’t enough weight in it to rotate your arms more. Please explain if I am way off.
@apaulmcdonough2170
@apaulmcdonough2170 2 жыл бұрын
A Player will always induce Path and Rotation when making a stroke. You have to, to overcome the Inertia of the still Putter at Address and to overcome the Inertia of the Backswing to produce the Forward Swing. In themselves, a Face Balanced Putter WON'T Rotate of its own accord, while a Toe Flow/Hang Putter RESISTS Rotation. *Swing Path* and *Face Rotation* are two separate factors that either work in Harmony or in Discord.

I tend to put hook spin on my putts, causing straight putts to miss left. I do this by hitting the ball with inside to out path and square to target face. I do this naturally, I do not try to do this. Is there a putter style I should be looking at?
@apaulmcdonough2170
@apaulmcdonough2170 2 жыл бұрын
More Toe Hang/Flow would help. It's not so much "Hook Spin", as it is Pull due to the Face being Closed to Path. Face Angle is much more Dominant in Putt Direction than Head Path.

Love your show. Wondering if you would try an experiment for yourselves. And maybe look at it in terms of putting. I have recently started putting with a sort of dropping chop/spank stroke. (after watching some videos that Gary Player was in and listening to him talk about Bobby Locke) I now have started using a toe hang putter with a very flat face...no grooves. (Never Compromise Z/1 Beta...but lots of putters will work. White ICE etc.) The lie angle is up a bit. Bringing the club a bit closer to my feet. (This is where it gets weird) Where I might normally use a 35" putter I now use a 34" putter and could probably use a 33.75" putter. The grip is very standard and even small by today's standards. It is a standard Golf Pride pistol grip. Nothing special. But... This is an important point. I place the heels of my hands resting on the front of my pants. (YES...right "there" basically) My grip on the club is a standard overlay using the left hand two fingers and right hand two fingers only. My hands create a ball...they are not spread out. The ring finger of the left hand curls on top of the putter grip. (on the flat part) My hands are sitting at the very top of the grip. I don't bend over at the waist. I pretend there is a small styrofoam cup right where the ball is that I need to fill up. I tuck my backside a bit and let my front lead the way. (I think you are getting the picture) I don't use my arms. I ONLY use my wrists. This is why the standard pistol grip works best. I take a few practice swings. The club head comes up at approx. 20 degrees and back . I watch the metronome accuracy of the swing. The face seems to stay clean and square. The weight at the end of the shaft is taken in. I step to the ball. Check my alignment. (twice) I take my eyes off of the ball. I look at the hole. I look at the path...and then I look again at the hole and DO NOT look back at the ball. I pick my spot and let my eyes drift towards the hole again. My body knows the distance. My hands are set up. My concentration is on the hole. Not the ball. I swing and the club moves down and forward I smack/chop at the ball. The club drops quickly but softly to the grass just an inch or three from the strike point. The ball understandably pops off the face with a lot of back spin. It is CONTRARY to all that we talk about in putting. The backspin corrects and it's momentum from the chop (not the club face) lurches the ball onto a dead accurate straight ball path. And the distance control is awesome! It's unreal how many puts I make. I chop at the ball and after checking my line I don't look at the ball only the cup. I can do this for 70 foot putts (with more swing) as well as 5 foot puts with more chop). The 8 to 10 footers are the best. My playing partners don't understand it. They think I'm doing something super off norm and strange to look at. But... I beat them by seven strokes a side...Mostly due to putting. I was just wondering if you guys would try it? I see you guys as incredibly well informed...but also maybe unwilling to try something that would screw with the tech...Or it might open up a whole new line of putters for you? The metronome swing. I call it something else...but...whatever. And no I'm not some weird old dude in overalls with a beard. I actually play very normally and fairly well.

It gives putter twist info, which more or less amounts to just a different way of knowing where the ball was struck. In our opinion it's even more useful because we can compare off-center hit performance with different putters and see how much the head twisted due to an off-center strike

Great video! Question for you guys because most guys (even tour players based on Pings study) do not aim the putter at their intended target (Like Matt who was aiming the Futura left and he didn't know it). Would you say using the line on your golf ball to line up your putts is actually detrimental to putting and most people would be better off not using the line on their ball? I ask because i go back and forth on weather to use the line on the ball or not. Any opinions are greatly appreciated! Thanks

Really good content. You educated me on something I definitely had mixed up re: toe hang. When a putter has toe hang like my old 2012 Scotty Newport 2, all the weight is in the toe so unless you really arc your stroke, the face will be open, right? That’s why my fitter always told me to either have a putter that was face balanced or have a putter with very slight toe hang like my current Scotty Cameron Concept X 01. My miss was always a push with the Newport 2 and my fitter always said my stroke was fighting the design of the putter. I always thought it was opposite that the putter closed faster w toe hang. Would Concept X design be similar to the Futura in this video with similar results? I’m having the BGT Stability shaft put into the Concept X right now based on your video on that topic. Thanks for all the information.

I’ve putted with SeeMore putters for the past couple of years, but bought an Evnroll ER2CS this week for the face tech and noticed that I’m pulling straight putts. I compared the toe hang yesterday to my SeeMores (Giant M1t and Z1c), and realized that the Evnroll ER2CS is almost face balanced while the SeeMores have a good bit of toe hang. All three putters have the same grip (Super Stroke Pistol GTR Tour). Do you think adding some tungsten putty to the holes on the toe side of the ER2CS would help slow the toe down? I would be fine with the additional weight because I play it at 32.5” and the swing weight is only D5.

I am having the same problem. I got a "Putting Stick" putting aid. It is very good and has really identified some of my putting problems. Primarily, when I align with the putting stick, the putter (Envroll ER 7) appears to be pointing slightly left of the hole. If I ignore the hole and simply putt down the stick, it goes right in the hole on a good stroke. I have no idea why the putter would visually look like it is pointing left when I know it is lined up exactly straight. Perhaps this has to do with the amount of offset? I plan on getting fitted at some point to solve this.

Very informative and interesting video. I thought it was interesting that instinctually you adjust your aim based on your stroke. I also found it interesting your grip change made the putter you were fitted for not a good fit. You should do a video on how sight plays a part in aim. I find that after aiming my ball from behind, using a line on the ball, it looks completely different when I am standing over the ball.

So if u get fitted for putter to shitty stroke u have at time, then u get lessons and get a whole new stroke, do u have to get refitted? I got fitted for all clubs Then I get lessons Changes my whole swing Then I get out on course and I suck

Good sharing of in-depth knowledge in putters. Unfortunately Matt is left handed so whatever they said have to reverse back to apply to right handers. The conversion of facts and knowledge applicable to left handers to right handers takes a few second in the brain. It would be much helpful if Ian can repeat the advise to right handers as well. Good work one of the more detail analysis of putter knowledge.

how awesome it would be to have this kinda technology available without the need to book a long flight. matt is a lefty and lines up left. i am a righty and line up left. part of my issue is with astigmatism in my left eye. so i have a hard time with R-to-L putts. but even worse...i h8 str8 putts

hey matt... what was your reasoning behind switching to right hand low putting? i seem to have better ball roll when i putt that way but touch is much better with a conventional grip. any suggestions?
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 5 жыл бұрын
I switch it up whenever I'm putting poorly, not necessarily a concrete reason for it but it often gets me out of a slump. I do find I pull a lot less putts that way, and for me the speed control is actually better. If you're struggling with touch I would just put in some extra practice time getting used to it.

Hi guys. , have a very specific questions about wedges, in particularly about my gap wedge. I pull it left every time I hit it , now I play 3 vokeys , 60 m grind, 54 m grind and 50 f grind , my pw Is a i200 ( part of set) , now the only one I pull left is the 50, I have had lie angle checked and it’s perfect, but my golf shop doesn’t do much grinding or anything like that... so my question, would grinding down the heal a little do the same as putting the wait out to the tow in some drivers? Being I don’t have heaps of money I don’t want to wreck this club (just got them ) but am apprehensive to use it now as it’s costing me shots. Would love to hear your thoughts

Best thing to do is have the 50º bent flat, whether it matches the other wedges or not doesn't really matter - more important to use lie angle to get your intended ball flight

It would create a face balanced putter. It should help correct a push putt.

Minimal to no shaft offset. And depending on the manufacturer can be face balanced or in the case of my scotty Newport 2.6 almost full toe hang

@apaulmcdonough2170

It isn't so much where the Shaft Meets the Putter, but more how that contributes to either Face Balanced, or the amount of Toe Flow/Hang. As T F/H diminishes towards F B the Ball Path moves from Push towards Pull (ALL other Factors remaining the Same.)

What I meant to ask is: Do you agree that putter path can be changed by replacing they style of grip? The article states that research shows that by going to a pistol grip you are likely to close the face quicker.

I have an odyssey 2ball putter from 2016. The face is really hot. Do you guys find that the majority of newer putters by the top manufacturers are geared towards a hotter face? I'm not sure its better, I enjoy something with less pop.

Depends on the insert, if you try a bunch you should be able to find some softer options, the new Ping line for example

Hands Control putter face ..leave toe and heal weight alone its smoke and mirrors..Try moving ball position before you put weight in ... the more upright you are the better you putt..Its easier to repeat the swing..
