Today we dive into English rock band The Smiths. "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" is a song featured on the band's third studio album The Queen Is Dead released in 1986. It was not released as a single in the UK until 1992, five years after their split, to promote the compilation album ...Best II.

Seeing the Smiths live as a brooding 14yr old change me forever. I was an outcast and mostly alone due to my raging ADHD which to this day still colors the way I feel about life. Morrissey wrote the soundtrack to my life. Not to discount Johnny Marr. His brilliant music and melodies are like no other and fill me full of life and hope. This songwriting duo wrote songs that mattered. They made you laugh and cry.. sometimes both in the span of 3 minutes. Thank you for appreciating this song.

“To die by your side, it such heavenly way to die” … I was never able to decide if it was extreme passion, or extreme depression! Most possible both. Smiths is so unique style! 🥰

So dreamy. I'll always be grateful for being introduced to this band. I'm sad I'll never see them perform together, but at least I get to blast them at home/in the car 💁🏽‍♀️

Interpretation and reaction to the vibe of a song is so individual. I know for me as a closeted gay college student when that album came out this particular song really spoke to my loniness, isolation and fear of rejection from my family and friends (this was during the height of the AIDs epidemic). I kept it all inside, but had this one close friend that I was head over heels in love with, but he was straight and I never let on. We went so many places all over California in his junky little car. "Driving in your car" really meant something. Honestly, the Smiths music really helped during that time.

It's jsut such a brilliant track. Glad you gave some love to Electronic. Tony Wilson of Factory Records said he regretted not signing the Smiths but didn't really regret not having to deal with Morrisey - and this is a man who dealt with the Happy Mondays who dismsantled most of a studio to sell the equipment to buy crack.

hummm... Everything The Smiths did were so so right, these guys were really cooking their sound, Marr and Morrissey , explosive duo, so much depth ...amazing , dont have the words to describe this song... album cover is one of the best ever. If you are depressive this song is like came from heaven to you, and you feel good.

Thanks for this!! The Smiths and Morrissey ,, every lyric dripping with a random delicious mix of melancholy, sarcasm and longing. Morrisey will rarely or never admit to a songs meaning, giving every song an endless number of possible interpretations, creating the possibility for each fan to uniquely relate to each song in their own way. Morrisey takes this to the extreme of further keeping himself as much a mystery as the meaning of his lyrics. All enriched by the musical talent and originality. Maybe also take a listen to Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before and Every Day Is Like Sunday.

It's only when you have your first crush, first real love and then the inevitable heart break that bands such as The Smiths and The Cure truly come into their own. Nothing like sitting on your bed crying to those bands. It's not age specific either!

I've always interpreted this as being that the character is "queer" which is why they have been thrown out of their house by their family, and just finding the first "someone" to be with, such as the "and in the darkened underpass I thought Oh, God my chance has come at last, but then a strange fear gripped me and I just couldn't ask". They were in the car and wanted to make a move, but felt that they couldn't. Anyhoo, as a queer man growing up back in the day, it really resonated! Take it as you will, but that's just my take......I don't think this is light-hearted btw if you listen to the lyrics. Great reaction, and sub'd. xxooxx (and I copied and pasted this comment from another reaction! Because it's my take on this song) xx

This song almost did not make it on the album. Morrissey hated the strings and orchestral sounds. Johnny Marr loved it. All the strings and orchestral sounds were done by Johnny Marr using the E-mu Emulator II sampler. The argument over the string was won by Johnny Marr. Ty should react to any song off the first Electronic album
