Ty Tabor Interview: Growing up in his family’s bluegrass band, frustrating early challenges King’s X had in finding their sound and getting it launched, playing Woodstock 25 in front of 300,000 people but feeling like no one was there, most important lessons learned from King’s X experiences. His favorite guitars, why he was so secretive about his tone in the early days, best decision he ever made, biggest influences, scuba diving with dangerous bull sharks in the Gulf, importance of questioning everything, love, his first Telstar guitar, loads more. Very cool

Do you know what amps he was using back then? I saw them with my dad around 1998, I was around 16 and had been playing guitar for 4 years and all I could think about is how amazing his guitar tone was.

@@cardbored_ he used a bunch of different gear back then…. I remember between the 90’s and early 2000’s, he had a POD Pro, he had a Dual Rec that was a rack mount / 2 channel version, and for awhile he used the Egnator M4 preamp. That’s definitely not all of it, but there ya go.

One day in 1988, I walked to the record store with the money I saved from mowing lawns. I bought Out of the Silent Planet because the cover looked cool. I put the record on the turntable and turned it up loud. What I heard was like nothing I heard before. I’ve been a close fan ever since and have been fortunate enough to see them three times. This is where I discovered drop d. I spent countless hours deciphering Ty’s guitar parts. King’s X, along with Rush, elevated my playing and gave me something to strive for. Musically and lyrically King’s X is a deep, deep well that has kept me curious and waiting on the edge of my seat for more.

For those of you with kids and want to explain how life is unfair, tell your kids about Kings x. This band is super praised by popular bands and still with all the unbelievable talent in Kings x has they are not as popular as bands with little talent. King's X is one of those bands that if a member leaves then it's automatically a different group. Most bands usually have that one member who's the heart and soul of the band. But with King's X each member is required for the heart.

Ty has been one of my favorite players for decades, and King's X one of my favorite bands of all time.Ty is what I'd call a complete guitarist. He's a musician first and foremost, and a guitarist second. This is why he is so incredibly musical. He's got good ears and he's not imitating other players. He can take the music where it needs to go.

King's X were the true Godfathers of grunge ... open tunings ... incredible atmospheres and tone, one of the best bands ever.
@brianloy7856
@brianloy7856 Жыл бұрын
Correction…(My apologies in advance) not “open tunings” they use drop tunings where the 6th (E) and 4th (D) string of the guitar are tuned an octave apart. Commonly known as “Dropped D” when tuned to concert (A440) pitch. However, King’s X and other grunge/metal bands often tune down from A440 a half-step, whole step, even a minor third (with heavier strings and setup adjustment). A common King’s X tuning is C, G, C (octave), F, A, C. This is dropped D down a whole step. Most common “as low As you go” tuning with standard Instruments. Some guitar players have gone from 6 to 7 strings adding another 4th down on the scale with a string below the 6th. On standard instruments dropped “C” is about as far as you can go without string rattle and buzz. Black Sabbath tuned down back in the 70’s due to Tony Iommi’s severed finger tips (from and industrial accident at work) but did so in “standard tuning.” Many guitarists, especially Fender Stratocaster players (Hendrix and SRV), and those that play with keyboard players will tune down to E flat (one half step down). The Stratocaster just has a stronger voice and tone in E flat. I’ve always tuned my Strats to E flat. It’s where they breathe fire and take no prisoners. In bands with strong keyboard players, you’ll find they love those black keys which means songs written in E flat instead of E and B flat instead of B or A. Strong male tenors (vocalists) love the key of B flat. Also, if you play with horns they love the keys with flats and sharps (the black keys). So, by tuning to E flat a guitarist can still play in open string keys on the guitar yet the keys, horns and vocals will be playing those flats and sharps they love. It’s very common for guitar and bass to tune to E flat. The “drop D” is also commonly used on acoustic guitar as is DADGAD where the 1st, 2nd and 6th strings are all tuned down one whole step. I remember playing “Fat Bottom Girls” by Queen with Ty on our Les Pauls in his little apartment in Springfield that he shared With my band mate. He was like, “Oh, yeah! I remember that one. Drop D! I love playing in that (tuning)!” This was when the band was still “The Edge” - right before the new wave “Sneak Preview” days. 🤦‍♂️ Man, I hated that name…and that awful sounding album! Yikes! I remember pissing them off good - as a practical joke I sent a couple of those awful sounding songs to a buddy of mine at the local AOR FM station when they were coming to town as King’s X years later! “And now ladies and gentlemen here’s the humble beginnings of this former quasi local band with their Uber Heavy layered sounds. They are coming to town next week here’s now King’s X playing “Media Man” from they’re Sneak Preview LP 6 years ago!” LOL!!! Plank plank plank “Media Man!” LOL! Man, they were pissed at me! My buddies and I laughed our asses off. God, they were SO GOOD! Anybody that heard them back in the day knew they were going to “make it.” For whatever reason, the masses just didn’t dig them - not like all the musicians in the US and Europe did anyway. I was proud to know them. I was proud to support them. I remember one time they were in town, Jerry’s son flew in and he asked me if I would give him a ride to the airport to pick him up before the show. We did and had a blast. I think we got BBQ for everybody on the way back. That was a great visit. Love those guys. We’re all old fucks now. Back then we were all peach fuzz faced babies - except for Doug- he was the elder of the gaggle - although he rarely acted it. Good times man!

I tell my daughters and son-in-laws that same thing. However, I say "Wise people realize how little they know and Immature people think they know it all". Cause I think it's more about humility and pride than intellect. But intelligence def plays a part too. Btw, I also remind them that even a 2 year old thinks he knows it all & doesn't want to listen to anyone and until a person grows out of that, wiser people will always see them as somewhat immature. Same goes for impatience, drama, defensiveness, vanity materialism, etc. It all just immaturity.

They completely changed my world in regards to introducing me to harmonies, different tunings and showing the "rock" world that you can still put out incredible music without bowing down to the mainstream. Hi Ty.. I just wanted to tell you I really enjoyed this interview.. Being a fan of your band and your guitar wizardry I kept telling our producer that I want my guitar to sound like this from Kings X. My band Love/Hate did the support slot of the AC/DC Razor's Edge in 1990 and you guys picked up the 2nd leg right after us. Defiantly helped our sales. Wish I had had a chance to see you guys on the same stage.. Nothing but respect to your band and your guys artistic approach.. Peace, Jon E. Love

Such an in-depth conversation is an absolute TREASURE to us, Ty! And when you told the story of getting to get on stage & jam with The Producers, I couldn't help but imagine what it would mean to me & the musicians I play with if we ever had the chance to set even a single foot on stage with King's X! Thank you so much for being so candid and letting folks like me feel like we're getting to know you irl a little bit. Bless you!

Kings X is probably my biggest musical influence when I started playing guitar, bass, and drums back in the early 90s. I started drop tuning my guitars because of them. I met and hung out with them after their show at the Whiskey in Hollywood back in 2003. Great guys. Those first five albums were so great.

It's really great you know that Ty has such a unique style, and it's so King's X, him and dUG create a magical mix of vocals and harmonies that are so pure and riveting. I always get scared that I'm going to here bad news about these guys, it's been a good ride, of a band you don't hear too much about. Which I think is why they're still here... and rocking it even all these years later. He's so humble, so real. Incredible...👍💯

just ran across Ty Tabor's stuff on youtube music searching for a "Kings X station". then discovered his solo stuff, then youtubed him and found this. Very awesome guitar playing and writing. Again, the solo stuff is just amazing. its so difficult to find hard rock/metal music nowadays that is fresh and not pretentious or copycat of other well known guitarists. Also, I graduated from evangel TOO! and i didn't know that about him. anyway much respect! peace!

My ALL-TIME FAVORITE BAND! I've been a Ravin and droolin fan since 90. seen a lot of shows,one of my favorites was them opening for Dream Theater and Joe Satriani. They played Cigarettes and Ty's solo brought the whole room on it's feet for a standing O. No easy feat, that's a tough crowd!😆

The Jughead record is fantastic... I had no idea it was buried... "paging willie mayes" off that album is amazing as well as a few other tracks ! I have shows with Kirk Henderson on guitar... somehow so many of those "sneak preview" shows have survived. And the back story history is one of the best I have ever heard, it backs up so many stories I know but this makes it totally solid.. nice job making Ty talk and talk and talk... wow.

The Producers were a huge influence on King’s X back in the day. I had the opportunity to be around the band and built a friendship with Ty (and Jerry) when they were still “The Edge” in Springfield. I remember Ty being all excited to play “She Sheila” for me as he was so juiced about how good it was. To this day, I still listen to those first two Producers albums. I think the first was self titled and the second (with She Sheila) was titled “You Make The Heat.” I believe I have them as a single CD release. Very Pop, very Beatles but with a ton of power - distorted heavy guitars - kind of like another band we know! 😊
