Beauty fly Jason, you elevate the standard for this tie. Appreciate your explanation on the "why" for the materials you've selected. I don't mind this one taking a few minutes more....steelhead are too splendid a fish to pursue with an ugly fly! much respect, David W.

Still loving this video. Agree with others that a list is helpful and would result in more sales. Shouldn’t need to go to a blog for that.

+NWOutfitters Is it so hard for you to at least provide a hot link to your blog? How about a direct hot link to where this video is featured on your blog? The only link provided in the description is for your fly shop- not your blog. And there is no information at all on your fly shop's website to steer traffic towards your blog. Your blog isn't easy to navigate to find a specific entry- there is no search function and posts are only divided up by either the posting date or one of 6 categories. I had to scroll through 3 different categories until I found the post- and all I wanted was the name of the brand of fly tying thread. Would it be too difficult to show the thread to the camera so the name is visible to the viewer? Perhaps you want people to wander and browse through your blog, but it comes across as being arrogant and condescending at best and lazy and sloppy at worst.

It may seem like a dumb question, but when you say different color combos such as purple/orange, which part is which? I take it that the video is blue/black? so if I were to use purple/orange say, purple would the main color and the arctic fox would orange? I'm really challenged when it comes to matching colors so I generally go by what you're using or recommend.

Dave Margison I usually like the wing to be the darker of the 2 colors and the fox the darker of the 2 colors. That is just what looks good to me. there is no right or wrong, only what you find pleasing.

A beautiful dressing, but that trailing hook presents a real danger of inflicting a fatal wound to a fish' gill. Why not set it further forward to reduce the chance of that happening. Do these lures catch more fish than, say, a muddled minnow? 45 minutes is a long time to tie one fly.

On most all winter steelhead intruder type patterns, the hook will sit close to the end of your materials, so you don't get short strikes. By rigging the hooks this way you actually reduce the damage to the fish. I have never hooked a fish in the gills, it usually always ends up right in the corner of the mouth. By using a smaller hook, you don't get the bleeding problems either. If this was tied on a 4/0 spey hook, the chances are that the fish would bleed. The bigger the hook, the bigger the hole. As far as the catch rate compared to other flies, every fly has it's day. For me, winter steelhead offer a chance for me to fish what I enjoy. I like fishing big flies and love hooking fish on big flies, so I tend to go that direction. I'm sure I could catch more by going smaller in some situations, but I would rather find the fish on attack mode. We have to fish smaller flies all summer, so winter is my time to fish the big stuff. You certainly don't have to spend 45 min on a fly to hook steelhead. A rabbit strip on a hook will work just fine most of the time, but I enjoy tying the cool stuff, and don't mind the time they take.
