Hi Barry, awesome as always. For anyone watching these vids, the THunder creek is an awesome fly. I use them for Atlantic Salmon in the Finger Lakes region of New York and they work very well. They're buoyant enough that I like to place a couple of split shot about 12 - 18" up from the fly and sort of nymph and twitch them in deeper pools and runs. It drives the salmon crazy. Pink/white and olive/white work best. Anyway, here's why I'm posting: a guy who turned me on to this fly said that in order to "manage" the bucktail better, he ties in his top section and then uses a small piece of blue painters tape to hold the hair away from the bottom section. He then, like Barry, pushes the tube over both sections of the hair, pinches it near the tie down point, and removes the tape. I can't tie as well as Barry, so this little "aid" is a hassle-free time saver for me. But yeah - fish this fly! A lot. lol! It's absolutely awesome.

I love tying these. I think the key to the 'Keith Fulsher' style (he wrote the book 'Thunder Creek Flies') is the head. You want the head to be flat to the gill area. No slope. To do this, I usually taper the head as you did and the gill area wraps - the wrap nearest the head should be at the same width as the head or one or two turns at most smaller, then it can taper down, with the red sharpie on dyneema (or acrylic paint) on the one or two wraps nearest the head. That way, you really get his perfect 'flat' stye head. Then either paint or coloured gulff resin for the eyes - makes them come out just like the book. One of my favourite flies to tie.

Another beauty Barry! You're an excellent teacher, I learn the fine points of tying a pattern plus how to prepare the materials used to make the tying easier. I've learned more about deer hair from you as well as many awesome tools. I had to revisit Thunder Creek Flies by Fulsher / Klausmeyer after watching this. I thought that may explain the recent popularity of this style, as you mentioned, but that book was copy righted in 2006 (original in 1973), ten years earlier then this tutorial. Maybe they're rediscovering an awesome multi specie bait fish pattern. Thanks again Barry!

Thank you. Solid strait forward tutorial. And good info about using the buck tail. I'm an inexperienced tier and this looks like some thing a can manage. should be easy to adjust colors to match about every small bait fish. Reminds me of a "surf candy" but on a longer shanked hook.

Hi Michael, Its a classic American streamer used for all kinds of fish, and your right you can change the colours to match just about any baitfish.

Nice fly thanks...Can we use deer hair in this patern ?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 3 жыл бұрын
Ho Cevdet, thanks. No deer hair will flare too much, it has to be buck tail. Even when using buck tail you have to use hair from the tip of the tail, this hair flares least.

I have used squirrel tail, and not to contradict, but on small versions I have used southern body hair of deer. Just can’t be crunchy hair, hollow. The clear straw idea,,, buy that man a beer! Definitely one of those why didn’t think of that moments.

don't think i heard what hook you used (may have missed it,i blame it on age,ex-wife said i did it on purpose so i didn't have to do anything but fish)also what sizes would work best for whale sized rainbows,around 12" actually
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Bobby, yes its easily done! It should be a straight eyed streamer hook I use a Mustad S74 and for fish of the size your after I would go with a # 10 or 8.

HI Barry - where do you get those eyes? Are they printed flat on paper/plastic or are they the raised eyes? Thanks Eunan

Hi Eunan, these are just regular small adhesive tape eyes.

Having only started watching your videos, I'm learning a lot - thank you. For the Thunder Creek Bucktail, what size thread are you using that allows you to cinch it down that hard? 3/0 I would suspect but would like your input. Thanks

Hi Bob, the thread I use on most of my flies is Dyneema you can watch a video I made just about this thread kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNF_Zb1lst2mcZ8.html

Thanks so much - sorry for so many questions but I'm finding I'm learning much from your sites. I have found Veevus (Dyneema) here in the US in 3 sizes. 30-100-and tow rope size. Which do you use?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 7 жыл бұрын
I use 55 and 100 but 30 would be ok for most flies.

Great tying again . Would these work for bass in Ireland ?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yes for sure, i have taken many salt water sea trout and bass on these. I do find that for bass it's good to weight the head with a few turns of lead wire before you fold over the bucktail, then it "jigs" which is a real attractor for bas!
