It was a disappointing outing for Nigerian Afrobeats stars at the 66th Grammy Awards as Burna Boy, Davido, Tems, Ayra Starr, Olamide and Asake failed to win from 10 nominations across five categories.
The Nigerian contingent lost the inaugural ‘Best African Music Performance’ trophy to South African singer Tyla who earned the prize with her 2023 track, “Water”.
All the categories the Afrobeats stars contended in were announced at the Grammy Premiere ceremony where dozens of prizes are handed out before the main live telecast show.
2021 Best Global Album winner Burna Boy and compatriot Davido lost the category this year to Shakti. The world fusion band won with the album, “This Moment”, besting Burna Boy’s “I Told Them”, Davido’s “Timeless” albums, and others.

Gramnys have absolutely nothing to do with numbers. That's the Billboard Awards. The grammys are voted for by voting members of the Grammys (not even all Grammy members, voting members). So you have to first of all ensure the voting members are aware of the music you submitted and then try and influence them if possible. Tyla has a team behind her that understand the system, and they worked the system. All the songs that were nominated are good, and any of them could have won with the right push.

South Africa's population is just a quarter of Naija's population, by logic as far as numbers are concerned Nigeria will always be better than us on streaming platforms such as KZfaq, Spotify, etc. but not on quality, just on quantity because it's a numbers game.....tyla water won the Grammy because it appealed to everybody globally not just South Africans, you can check the numbers water music video currently sits on 120 million views twice the number of S.A's population and mind you !! not everyone in S.A has access to this platform maybe only 50% of views are from SA which amounts to 30 million views and minus those views from 120 million views it equals 90 million views this how much impact water had on the global stage

Big Question; I do understand and acknowledge that The Grammys is a Western award disguised as a "Global award", but WHY do the Whites and African Americans get to DEFINE AFRICAN MUSIC for US? Tyla won the Best African Music Performance. Emphasis on "AFRICAN MUSIC, African Music really? I would have been happy if any other African artiste regardless of their country won it as long as their music is authentically African, however Tyla's music is basically bubblegum RnB. It is not African Music at all!
