Recording mic I'm using: amzn.to/2YolA3N
Pick I'm using in this lesson: amzn.to/2GNGMuj
Capo I'm using in this lesson: amzn.to/2VHNREI
You HAVE to be listening to Tyler Childers' album Purgatory on vinyl! amzn.to/2DpzlHz
There are lots of lessons and tutorials out there... this is the only one that definitively teaches you how to approach this Tyler Childers song, Nose On The Grindstone. Here, you'll learn the Nose On The Grindstone chords and movements. This Nose On The Grindstone tutorial correctly shows how to execute the song capoed on the 3rd fret, while teaching rhythm consistent and sensible to how Tyler Childers plays.
Guitar lessons in person are expensive, this is free. Other guitar tutorials on youtube can be risky for your playing habits, because you may be taught faulty mechanics and spend time practicing incorrect short cut versions of a song. This video wont do that to you.

Very well-done tutorial, my man. I teach beginning guitar to kids starting at age 9/10, and when one of them brought this tune in to learn, I was very excited...I'm a huge fan of Childers', but had never learned this particular song myself. It's a relatively simple repeating chord structure, but the "feel" and "vibe" is so important to this one. Anyway, I taught my student the way I had it figured out (same way you play it!) and he pretty much nailed the majority of the song over the course of two or three lessons (one lesson/week). Then I stumbled upon this video... I sent him this link in between lessons, and he came back on the 3rd week playing it PERFECTLY (and even singing part of it, as well)! He was already doing quite well at it, but this vid helped him absolutely MASTER it, with Tyler's unique playing style. If your video can get a 15 yr old kid to learn the song near 'bout flawlessly, I consider that a win! Haha Keep up the damn fine work!

Man I really appreciate you telling me that! It’s always great when a young player is motivated to learn guitar because of awesome songwriters like Childers. And, thanks for the work you do too helping teach young players the ins and outs of guitar. As you know, you’re helping build a skill they’ll be able to get enjoyment out of for their whole life!

The Dm chords, though easy by itself, made my fingers all cramped up in combinations with the embellishments on the F and C chords, so I just put my capo 5 frets higher on the neck and transposed the Dm to Am, F to C, C to G and G to D. The embellishments are unchanged. Much more breathing space for my fingers and less pain. Nice tutorial

Hey Maggie! The one I’m playing in this video is a Collings D2H... it’s definitely a great guitar
@homeyiommi1921
@homeyiommi1921 5 жыл бұрын
This Collings really is a phenomenal sounding guitar...and it probably plays insanely well, too. They make great acoustics. As far as your desires for a good acoustic go, I'd say the most important thing is to look for a solid-wood top (spruce is the most commonly used). That's going to get you the best acoustic tone. There are other tonewoods that are great, too, depending on what kinda sound you want (spruce is relatively bright compared to, say, a "darker" or "warmer" tonewood like mahogany), but nowadays an inexpensive solid-top guitar is actually a reality! The cheapest of the inexpensive acoustics are going to have multiple-ply tops, and don't vibrate as well. Okay for beginners but if unamplified, room-filling acoustic tone is super important to you, a solid-top is the only way to go.

Love your vids. Question, I’ve developed the habit of not using a pick and wonder your thoughts. I like to strum with just my fingers, sort of as if I’m holding a pic and the back of my index mostly. Not a big deal, or something you’d recommend I work out of?
@TimGuitarLessons
@TimGuitarLessons 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that’s bad at all... it’s all about style and preference. Different songs, styles, and sounds call for different approaches... If I had fingernails I would love to be able to do what you’re describing and have that sound in my toolbox, but my nails are super short, so I can either use a pick for strong strumming attack or I can finger pick with the pads of my fingers which obviously would be pretty soft.

@TimGuitarLessons
@TimGuitarLessons 4 жыл бұрын
You're right... I usually explicitly state at the beginning of the lesson that I will speak of everything relative to the capo as though the capo is the nut... like the capo zeros everything out. I assume when most players put on a capo and then play a G shape, they aren't doing the math about where they're actually at on the fretboard and that it's just easier to conceptualize the progression and movements within it to say "the G chord" etc...

Practice it a few times, switching to it from different chords and see if you can get it down. It will sound the same except for 1string will be 1 note lower, but it still sounds “good”, no one will notice unless they are listening for it. Hope this helps!
