I was there. That moment was one of the coolest things I’ve ever been apart of. Over 20,000 people singing every word to a Tyler Childers song that isn’t even on one of his albums. I remember thinking at that moment, “Country music is as alive as its ever been.”

being a former coal miner and my family being entrenched in coal mining this is a superbly powerful song that many miners know all to well. how this young man sings about life is chilling.

Yes man, I was 17 years when I drove to the bottom of a massive open pit coal mine west of Cologne in the lignite coal rich region of the Rhineland in Germany. All older coal miners and millwrights had bad backs and sore knees but they kept going and they taught me lessons I will never forget. Here I am, 59 years old and working in a copper-gold mine in the northern wilderness of British Columbia, surrounded by beautiful mountains and scenery. Worked for 14 years in the arctic digging up diamonds and pumping oil out of the ground in Alberta and I have seen and maintained the largest man-made diggers in the world, the 288 bucket-wheel excavator in the Hambach Coal Mine in Germany. It was a monster of a machine, 279 feet high and standing between the massive crawlers while it was slowly creeping over the ground with its 14,000 Metric Tonnes of weight, still gives me the shivers. God bless all miners and god bless our countries. We need it........

I can see and hear the hopelessness in your words of memory. The days of drudgery with nothing to look forward to no matter the occasion. The low standard of living and complete lack of expectations that's so tangible in those rural eastern communities. Heavy smoking and often hard drinking and plenty of drugging. Abuse and neglect were the root of many bonds. Who could blame those that lived that sorrowful life to turn the destructive behaviors of addiction? To never once look outside the oppressive misery that surrounded and imagine a better place a better brighter community with good health and clean water. The failures were passed down from generation to generation so that was all that became known. To be sure there was a lucky few who were born with the movitation and intelligence to escape it. I imagine how they must've felt once gone. The disappointment, oh the utter disappointment.

It’s truly a great work song, my dad was a master carpenter and eventually resorted to pain killers and his way of life. But I always sing this song to myself from when I’m doing construction or serving tables to try to motivate myself into going to school again after my dad has tried encouraging me since graduating high, so that I don’t have to deal with the physical pain of the work. But also it’s way easier to make quick good money working hard jobs than going to college.

If country music were actually like this I would listen to it. A real story that is resonating with real people. Here's a guy singing out the struggles of where's he's from in his home state. The crowd shot you see real people singing along in sorrowful way, not a bunch of basic suburbanites who only listen to 'country' as an excuse to get drunk in a field. This song is not at all my story but it is clearly a bunch of other peoples. this is awesome.

About five years ago Sturgill opened for old crow medicine show at a local brewery by me. Long story short I blacked out at the show and lost my wallet (full cashed paycheck in it) my handkerchief and a pound of change. I thought it was gone for good. Over a month later I got a box in the mail from kentucky. Somehow my drunk ass was hanging out in sturgills camp after the show and they sent me all my belongings when they were done touring, pound of change included with a nice letter. Best memory I'll never have.
